The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

For nutrition, I'm lucky and my stomach can pretty much handle anything and neither taste nor texture bother me. (I should say during the run...I can't eat anything for about 2-3 hours before or I get back cramps).

Anyways, during training runs, I like to mix it up just for fun. I always have different brands on hand and different flavors.

But I do have a favorite race combo for a half marathon. At 45 mins in, I take a gel (any brand and flavor). At 1:30 in, I take Gu Peach Team Chomps (they have caffeine and are yummy!) And then at 2:15 I take a Honey Stinger waffle (any flavor). It's like a cookie and so good!

As for drinks, I only take my belt with me on runs longer than 6 miles. I'll fill one bottle up with Chocolate Zico Coconut Water and the other with G2 (I think that is the lite one) lemon lime. But for races, I don't bring anything to drink. I just get the PowerAde at every other water stop.

Hello everyone , This will be my first half marathon and first official race of any kind! My roommates from my college program days will be running with me and this is her first face as well. We're both super excited and have seem to be bitten by the run Disney bug.

I've been running three times a week starting with the ease into 5k app never having really run before and can already tell how much I've improved. What does everyone else find helpful for cross training though? Do you do the same activity or mis it up? I. Having trouble finding a good cross training activity that I enjoy and works with my schedule. I'd love to hear what everyone else is doing for their training/cross training since this is all new to me

Welcome! Congrats on signing up for your first race. Sounds like you have a great friend to run with from your college program and will have a blast. If suggest trying to find a 10k race to run sometime between now and November just to get a feel for race atmosphere. Nothing is like a Disney race, of course, but it would still be great for practice and I know every race I run gives me a confidence boost for these bigger runs.

In terms of cross-training, I like walking because it is easy. I also run in the pool when I start logging more miles to give my body a break. It looks goofy, but it is a great workout. Yoga is another favorite of mine to get some great stretching in without stressing my body. My sister does kickboxing as her cross training. (Probably why she's much fitter than I am :-).)

Welcome, glad you could join us! ;) :cool1: I would definitely agree with what capeseal said in about doing some 10Ks. It gets some nice training in and get you ready to see what a real race is going to feel like. Plus, they are a lot of fun.

For many years I have done the Firm workouts. Now I try to do those and my Jillian Michaels workouts 2 - 3 days a week along with my training runs and walking for my cross training. I feel this is giving me a full body toning.

My schedule is USUALLY
Mon - weights and walk
Tues - training run during lunch at work (2.7 miles) and I try for a cardio
Wed - maybe weights and walk
Thurs - same as tues
Fri - walk and maybe a cardio
Then my long run is either on Sat or Sunday, depending on schedule

Hello! As usual, I am late to the party :dance3:, but I am glad I finally found this thread:goodvibes.

I started running about 9 months ago. Prior to that, the only runs I did were beer runs:rotfl:. Now, I've done 4 5K's with another one this weekend. I know that it is not a good distance for 1/2 marathon training, but my 9-yo daughter runs with me and she is definitely not ready to do a 10K. Actually, the 5K's are part of a tribute to a fallen co-worker. He died doing EMS relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy and one of his goals for 2013 was to participate in 10 5K races. He was the kind of guy that made Santa look petite so none of us were really sure if he meant it or not, but we decided that we would take on his challenge. There is now a group of us that are committed to completing 10 5K's this year in his honor:lovestruc. After Saturday, we'll be halfway there:banana:. My DD9 has done all of them with me and she just turned in a time of 34:56 this past weekend:cheer2:.

When I run, I try to go for 45 minutes to an hour at a 12:30 pace. I am working on improving my endurance so that by the end of the summer, I can go over 2 hours and maintain that pace. I sometimes use my 1/2 marathon training app which utilizes the run/walk method, but sometimes, I just go out and run. Ironically, my times really aren't that different. If I run/walk, I am usually done in a 12:30 pace, whereas when I just run, I am between 11:45 and 12:00. Either way, my goal for November is simply to cross the finish line in the full and upright position:wizard:.

I am more of a planner than a runner so what I am really worried about are the logistics of the race weekend. It is just DH and I since the kids are staying home with the grandparents. We are staying at AKV (with the pipe-dream of our BWV waitlist to come through) and that is not a host resort. We arrive on Thursday at 5:30pm and we will not have a car. I know that we have to get to the WWoS on Friday at some point to pick up our race packets and do some shopping. What is the best way to do this? Are there buses from the parks or the TTC that will go to the WWoS? Or will we need to take a cab? Second question...on race night, I see that people who have cars will need to park at Epcot and take a shuttle to the WWoS at 7pm. Since we won't have a car, should I just plan on being at Epcot that evening and hopping the shuttle? My other plan was to eat dinner at a restaurant in the BW/BC/YC area and take the shuttle from the BWV (a host resort) to the WWoS. Ideas?

That brings me to third question...food. We don't want to eat any later than 6pm so I was thinking about a dinner reservation around 4:30. In accordance with my transportation question, I think dinner in the Epcot/YC/BC/BW area, maybe even the Studios, would be the most convenient option. We will not be doing a dining plan so we can eat pretty much anywhere...but where??? We want a TS restaurant for sure, but I have no idea what kind...Mexican and Asian seem like they would be a bit to salty before a race...Italian is good carbs, but perhaps still a little "heavy"...Steak? We LOVE steak! Yachtsman or LeCellier??? We could always eat at Sanaa or Jiko at 4pm and then take a bus to Epcot and transfer to the shuttle, right? Yikes!! I really have no idea, but I know that we will want an ADR so I need to nail something down.

Today is nice and sunny and time's-a-wasting so I'd better lace up the kicks and hit the road!

Will be running with my Samsung phone. Any advice on what type of belt I could get to fit my phone into that doesn't consist of having to wear an arm band?

For those of you looking into hydration belts, I think I am going to try this one since it is one of the few with pretty consistent good reviews:

http://www.rei.com/product/813463/a...stretch-velocity-hydration-waistpack-20-fl-oz

I figure I won't be wearing it a ton since it will just be used for my training runs that go over 6 miles but I still wanted something with pretty good overall reviews. Loved the look of some of the other belts folks mentioned, especially the iFitness but figured I would like a single bottle configuration better.

That's a really wonderful thing to do in honor of your late co-worker. :goodvibes I don't think you need to worry about adding distance in preparation for the Wine & Dine half just yet. Most training plans won't start until mid-late (for example, Galloway's beginner plan starts July 9: http://as1.wdpromedia.com/media/ewwos/pdf/rundisney/training-programs/2014/WnD13_Beg.pdf) summer, so you have plenty of time!

Someone else can correct me on this, but I am 99.9999% sure that the buses leave from the host resorts ONLY. So planning to grab a bus at the TTC or a park is a no-go. I think the best way would be to, like you said, get on a bus at a host resort. They don't check to make sure you're actually staying there, so it's fine. The only other option if you don't have a car or something to drop you off is to take a cab.

As far as suggestions for eating beforehand, I'd keep it light and narrow it to something that you've eaten before, something that you know your stomach can handle. And whatever you decide, try to do a trial run at home beforehand. Personally, Le Cellier sounds way too heavy to me the day of the race but I'm sure others can handle it just fine. :confused3

I've heard people have good success with Spibelts. During the full and half marathons in January I wrapped my phone in a paper towel, put it in a ziploc baggy and carried it with me during the races. Phone in one hand, camera in the other...it worked for me but I know others cannot stand having stuff in their hands during the race. Good luck finding something!

Are you looking to use the phone or just have it? I use an armband, but if I wasn't going to use the phone I'd suggest a spibelt. If you're looking to use it though sorry I can't help with that.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe most restaurants on property have a special menu insert for runners the day before the race. Things like pasta with lean protein and vegetables if I remember correctly. I wasn't running while I was there so I have to admit I didn't pay too close attention

Oh, good point. I had mine bagged the entire time because I wanted it for texting to meet up with people only. I don't listen to music during Disney races...there's so much to see on the courses and I want to make sure I can fully take it all in. :)

This would be awesome! In high school, we'd have all-day softball tournaments and my mom would send a concoction of bowtie pasta, tuna, peas and some light mayo to hold it all together. It was super yummy, not too heavy and a good mix of protein, carbs and veggies. We're staying in a studio, but I have a microwave pasta bowl so I could make this fairly easily.

Last W&D was my first half. The longest run I did prior to the race was 9.5 It was around a field and neighborhood Disney is much more interesting...

Hello fellow Michigander!

The only park that I am aware of a bus to WWoS is the Studios. And that one is a rarity. Your best bet would be if you are visiting a park on Friday, to take a bus to a host resort from that park instead of back to AKL. Then do it in reverse to get back to AKL after you pick up your bib and stuff. Or taxi it if you value time and convenience more.

If you are going to eat around Crescent Lake or in Epcot just prior to the race, remember you will need to bring all your race stuff with you. I'm not sure what you are planning on bringing, but that may swing the vote toward Sanaa or Jiko and taking the bus to Epcot for the shuttle.

If you are eating around Crescent Lake, don't forget about the dining options at the Swan and Dolphin. About the same walk and gives a larger variety of choice.

I find that I like to have a decent cheeseburger and fries by 5pm. Not really the best meal nutritionally, but it sits well and lasts until my banana in the pre-race holding field.

Question, what is the longest training run you are planning? I am trying to decide on a training plan.

This came up last night over dinner. It will be my DBF's first distance event. Right now, he is looking at maxing out around 10 miles. The first half I did, I made myself do a run the full 13.1, just so every muscle in my body knew what would be coming. Not for the timing/speed test, but just to make sure I was physically aware and ready for what was to come.

Question, what is the longest training run you are planning? I am trying to decide on a training plan.

For my first half (the Princess Half in 2011) I followed a Galloway plan that had a max long run of 14 miles. 10.5 miles in to that 14-miler I was having pretty extreme IT Band pain, so I called my husband to come rescue me. So my longest run for that race was the 12.5-miler from a couple of weeks earlier, and I finished the race just fine. Since then I've been maxing out at 12-mile long runs, which work pretty well for me. I've seen other plans that max out at 10 miles, and personally I think you'd want to at least get up to 10 miles, just for the mental hurdle of knowing you made it to double digits. :)

So yeah, I think you'd be fine with anything in the 10-14 mile range. It's personal preference I guess - if you want to know you can complete the distance before race day, do a 13- or 14-miler...otherwise you should be okay doing 10-12 miles for your longest run.

I am going to try for the 10 miles as well. I will NOT go 13.1 before the race...13 maybe, but I want be assured that I will run my best 1/2 marathon time. If it's my first, it's guaranteed to be the best;)
