The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Woo hoo! I'm in!!!

Hi all,

This is my first post here, I signed up for the site last November because I've been planning to do this race for that long and I wanted to book a DVC resort when the time came! I asked to be emailed when registration opened and there must have been an error, because it never did. I just realized yesterday that the registration is sold out. I'm devastated, I've been training since January and have my heart set on this race. It's on my 27th birthday and it has been my plan for so long. Does anyone know if extra numbers ever come out, or if people sometimes sell them if they can't make the race? I want to do this race SO badly. It would be my first half, too!

Welcone Deltadreamflight! Read on!

Try booking through get travel they probably still have spots available

Yes!
I checked w/ the tour operators listed on the Run Disney site, 3 out of 5 had availability!
• Cruise Planners
• Marathon Tours and Travel
.• GET Travel Sports & Events

I didn't really want to stay All Star Sports or CBR, but found that Cruise Planners (Dawn Haney) were booking for AllStar Sports AND! POFQ!:cool1:

Woo hoo! I emailed Dawn, and later spoke directly to her (She sounded lovely:flower3:, and all the more lovely for having an entry for me:flower3:! But she did say there weren't too many left!:hourglass)

This is my 50th birthday celebration -- Well, that's the week after, but still!

The plan is to stay until after my birthday, and do the MVMCP as well while I'm there!
The bigger plan is the Dopey! And the training plan calls for a long run that day, so this fits right in! :cool1:

Canadian beer: the best kind!!

OK, I might be a little biased.

No, I don't think you're biased at all!:confused3 lol!

Now I HAVE to finish last fall's trip report! (lol, don't click on that link below, I'm embarassed:blush: I've not gotten to finishing it, life just got too busy and complicated for a while!)

I think we've talked training plans before? But the Run Disney Facebook page post got me thinking and researching. I think I'm going to use the Hal Higdon Novice 2 plan now that I've looked over a few different plans. Anyone else going to use this plan so that we can be training accountability buddies? I'm going to start next week and then loosely follow it at first to accommodate our summer travel schedule. I'll really buckle down and start following the exact schedule in August. Here's the plan I am going to use if anyone else is interested:
http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51312/Half-Marathon-Novice-2-Training-Program

I really like Higdon plans and will probably use this one...however I have another half the first weekend in October, so whatever I do between then and W&D weekend will be some sort of abbreviated version of Novice 2 (the last 4 weeks only, and will probably change around the long runs a bit). So I won't be a great accountability buddy. :(

Plutobaby this is my problem too! I battle chronic shin splints and I thought it was my shoes but after a really thorough study of my running log and some research on individual base mileage thresholds, I think it's actually just a case of "TMTS" or "TFTS" (too much too soon or too fast too soon). So I'm trying to go into this training period with the following rules:

1. SLOWLY build mileage.
2. NO SKIPPING CROSS TRAINING!

It's gonna be hard to stay disciplined but we can do it! I know there have been times when I've gone to run and wanted to go faster and I have to keep telling myself "Nope. The ENTIRE point of this run is to train yourself to control that impulse!"

Great tips! Think I'll take some Italian downtime (aka have to get some laundry done! :lmao:) and come up with a game plan and STICK TO IT!::yes::

My problem too! I have to be careful to slowly build distance and not try to do speed and distance at the same time. I think I will do the Jeff Galloway program- it seems like it will fit my schedule and get me to where I need to be.

We have to think about a meet-up!! Anyone have any ideas? We are there such a short time - what about picking a country to meet in for a drink AFTER the race, would that work? I suggest Canada, it is close to the finish line! Lol!

Great idea! I would also try something ahead of time as everyone will be finishing at different times and may just want to head back to their rooms after. Maybe Friday sometime at either the Expo or a non-park place? The patio at the BWV or something like that? And I definitely want to at least try and get a group pic again of everyone in their costumes before the start. :thumbsup2 Maybe if we have a couple of meetups, everyone can at least get to one of them. :confused3 Just throwing that out there...

I had a great run tonight. 4.2 miles in `49 minutes. The best part was that each mile was within 5 seconds of each other. I love when I keep a consistent pace over the whole run. I felt like I could go further when I finished, so that was exciting.

Random question - I had ACL reconstruction on my left knee twice. Once in 2001 and again in 2003. I've had some slight nerve damage to my knee from the first surgery. Normally it just manifests itself in a numb feeling when I touch my knee cap. When I finished my run tonight, that numb feeling went from my knee cap half way down my shin. . Its fine now and I didn't notice it when I was running just when I tried to get down on the floor to stretch afterwards. Has anyone ever experienced anything like that?

Yes, I had an acl surgery years ago maybe '97 from an old college fb injury. I too have the numb feeling but mine manifests itself above my knee in my quad. It is there all the time when I touch the area. Mine bothers me more when putting in high mileage, like 35-45 a week. Nothing helps it.
The nerves were cut during surgery and there ain't no growing that back :(
I chose the patella, friends that used a cadaver do not have same feeling.

Less than 6 months! I love the idea of getting a custom shirt. I kinda want to wait until I know if I am preggo or not so that I can wear a "running for two" top. :)

- Carey

Hope you get to wear your "running for two" shirt. I am so impressed that you are going to train through a possible pregnancy. With each of mine, I had to stop at 6 weeks with severe morning sickness. Wearing a Disney-themed "running for two" shirt would be so adorable.

I posted a few posts back that I joined the 'half-crazies'. :rotfl:

I'm Leslie. :wave2: This will be my first Half-Marathon. If I were to run this race TODAY, it would be my first formal race.

I am a Turbofire (by Beachbody) graduate. I just finished the program. :thumbsup2 I decided to test my running legs, and what do you know??? I ran 3 miles without stopping. I've been running for a few weeks now, consistently clocking 8:30-9:30 splits on my 3-4 mile jogs. I've yet to tackle anything longer, yet my marathon-running SIS and Disney-race-running SIL talked me into the Wine & Dine b/c we're already planning on being in WDW during this timeframe. OMG, I was so nervous as I hit the submit button on my registration. But alas, here I am. I'll be 35 when I run this race and I've got a super-awesome little girl who is almost 5. :lovestruc

I'm kind of following the Jeff Galloway plan, but not really as I started jogging before I really knew who he was and didn't know about the run/walk thing. I guess I'm kind of doing my own thing. I am trying to do the three-to-four per week with one longer run on the weekends. I've been getting three of four miles in during my lunch break...about two or three times/week. I work in an urban setting near a spot meant for walkers/joggers/bikers. It is PERFECT for squeezing out 3 - 4 miles! No cars!!!!! Weekends will be the longer runs...and will have more logistics - having to make sure that my husband is around to tend to our daughter/etc.

I'm HOPING to get a 10k in before the race. I think that I read that is enough to get you a spot outside of the last corral. Seasoned racers, do you know if that is correct?

Welcome! Those are some impressive times for a beginner. Sounds like you have a fabulous place to train. I always start back into running around 12-minute miles. I am just now, getting my times into the 10-minute mile range and hoping to break into 9 minute territory with some diligence. I also have an almost 5-year-old girl. It is such a fun age! Are you taking her or making it a kid-free race trip? We are completely crazy and having the race kick off a week-long time in the parks. I expect we'll be hobbling along behind the kiddos most of the time and asking for turns in the stroller on Sunday :)

Thank you. Most people look at my like I'm nuts when I describe that feeling.

I had both the patella tendon (when the nerves were damaged) and 2 years later the cadaver since I didn't have a patella tendon anymore. Talk about a night and day difference in recovery.

Its more annoying than bothersome so I just ignore it.

Doing my Rave Run tonight. Ankle has felt great all week but after my killer day at school today, it's sore.

A little worried but at least there's not a lot of pressure to perform!

Wishing I just felt great about running right now......

The "if I had it to do over" dilemma. My surgeon was the head Olympic surgeon, I went with his direction. Funny thing is I recall him saying it is your decision, I cannot make it for you, then he proceeded to tell me that cadavers fail 50-60% of the time.
I am a math guy so which was I going to choose.

I was hesitant to get the surgery at all and now, many years later, even 1 month later I wish I hadn't.

In the 15+ years since the surgery I have learned south about the acl, especially that there are many people who never get the surgery, would have been me, they just rehab it and build other leg muscles, namely the hamstrings.

I was always an athlete and knew my body, once the swelling went down and the rehab was over I knew I made a mistake, live and learn.

I too have people looking at me like I am crazy when I explain the weird feeling in my leg :)

No posts on our thread in over a day? This thread is just too dead, we gotta get it moving again. :cool1:

Anyone running this weekend? I had a 8 mile race yesterday. My longest run so far. It was an absolutely perfect race. The scenery was just beautiful, I could not have been more happy with my time, I PR on my 5K and 10K and I came in 43 out of 48! :lmao: But it just gave me a big confidence booster in my running. Today I have a 10K, I figured the back to back races is practice for marathon weekend and Princes when I am going the 10K and 1/2. Wished W&D had 10K too, maybe next year. ;) But there is also a kids race after the 10K and my 5 yr old DS and 6 yr old DD can't wait to get a medal today. :cheer2:

I'm trying to run this weekend but my running karma is just messed up this week! Lol. First, I was going to race in Cleveland this weekend but my kiddo came down w strep so we didnt go. Then yesterday I was about to run and my left shoulder (not the one w the strained rotator cuff) had shooting searing pain in it so I didn't. I was going to go run this am at the local track and found out its their relay for life event. So I'm heading out in a few hours. Even though my shoulder is still hurting.

The positive side is that my shins seem to have recovered from my "too much too soon"-itis. So I guess the unplanned rest was good.

Looking forward to getting back into the groove and hopefully signing up for princess and tink in a few weeks. In the meantime, I'm spending the next 8 weeks before I really get into w&d training cross training and running for fun.

My word, these back to back races just seem amazing to me! I break very easily, must treat body nicely :rolleyes1 I love seeing kids races, how did you all get on?

I'm not in training for the half yet, but trying to get a decent time to submit in 10ks. Had one this morning, it was beautiful and pretty flat with actually pretty good support for a race of 1500..... got a PB! Haven't got the official time yet, but garmin says 49.09 so I am made up!!!! That is off to the time submission people once it's confirmed :woohoo: Swear it's my new trainers- onRunning are suiting me at the moment, we'll see what happens as the distance increases.

Everyone with injuries, I think we've probably all been there. I got a stress fracture in my foot after the London Marathon 2 years ago and it still doesn't feel right. Maybe one day something will click, but until then I ignore it and keep the physio checking it regularly.

Loving watching all the progress everyone :yay:

Ran/walk 4 miles today! It's the longest I've gone so far. I forgot to time myself but I think it took about an hour. I actually feel okay! I could have easily done another 2 or 3 more inches ( lol! )

I hope everyone had a great weekend :)
Melinda

Five miles yesterday at a 10:30 pace. Nothing today because I'm having back pain. Finally hitting physical therapy this week!

So many of you doing great over the weekend. I was a big lazy bum! Back to grindstone tomorrow though!

I feel super lazy compared to all of the folks doing multiple half-marathons! It takes a lot of mental work to get myself out the door for my weekend run. And then it is more about eating less-guilt ice cream later ;).

I hit a current training distance high today of 5.1 miles in 59:50. It felt great and I felt like I could have gone further. I'll probably stick to a 5 mile max for the next month and then start building to half marathon distance

I ran a local half marathon yesterday and it was probably the worst race I've run yet. :sad2: So many things went wrong...some were my fault, some weren't (course crowding, weather). Anyway, after thinking about it for a bit I thought I'd share what I learned here. Don't make the same mistakes I did!

1. Don't underestimate the importance of hydrating in the days leading up to the race. Normally I am really good about this, but for whatever reason this time I drank barely any water last week, and I felt it yesterday. My legs felt like lead. It was awful. A big part of my problem was pretty intense stomach issues throughout the race, and I think being hydrated would have helped with this too.

2. Don't slack on strength training and rolling with a foam roller/The Stick. I used to have IT Band issues, but last year I got them under control thanks to regular strength training (specifically squats...not even using weights, just squatting down and coming back up with my body weight and adding a jump at the end) and rolling my IT Bands. I fell off the wagon and it didn't bother me at all until this race yesterday. It was bad enough that I had to stop and stretch out more than once.

3. Recognize when it's just not a good run and adjust expectations accordingly. I came into this race with a very specific goal time that was ambitious but definitely achievable for me. I realized very early on in the race that the run wasn't going well, and rather than readjust my goal to something more realistic, I stubbornly kept try to hold on to achieving that original goal time. As a result I finished discouraged and disappointed, and spent the rest of the day yesterday sulking and feeling sorry for myself.

And that's my sob story. It was a good learning experience, I guess. And as my husband said yesterday, even though it was a bad run, I still finished. So I guess that's something! ::yes::

Congrats on the new PDRs (Personal Distance Records)!! Isn't that a great feeling?? :yay:
