The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

For me it will depend upon if I am solo or not. I can spend a weekend at the All Stars by my one-some. However, DP is a little bit more particular about where he stays, so either the Swolphin or rent DVC points.

Well, knowing what the hosting resorts were before, I wasn't too upset as I love the CBR and have been looking for an excuse to go back for a very long time now, but it now dawns on me that if we do a mod CBR, unless the discount brings it down to what it'd cost to stay at POP, we may either have to choose to suck up staying at the All-Star, or cut down the length of our stay very dramatically. We were hoping for 10, anticipating 7, expecting to do 5, but now I'm thinking it'll be just the weekend. :guilty:

Is there anything wrong with CBR? I was initially thinking of staying there but have been reading from several boards about that being most of everyone's least favorite mods if not Disney hotel? I wonder why that is?

I'll only be staying for the weekend perhaps using the pool the day of the race to unwind and an extra day at the MK after the race at the most. What made me pause was the complaints about the buses? Would this include Race day?

CBR is the only mod we haven't stayed at. It doesn't appeal to me for several reasons - the location doesn't appeal to us (POR/POFQ win there for us), the resort is huge and I don't want to pay extra to have a good location, and this is just personal preference but I think the resort looks cheap and tacky in the bad 80s kinda way, and the rooms aren't any better (CSR rooms appeal to me the most out of the mods - I'm more of a clean, simple decor kinda gal ;))

If I'm going to go with a resort I don't care for, I'll save the money and stick with a value. Or I'll spend a little more and go with Swolphin or renting points.

For the race stuff, they're not the usual Disney buses. They're chartered buses instead. At both CSR and BWI, the race transportation was at the convention center entrance.

I actually love CBR. I like the theme, I like how large it is and how spread out everybody is... It's quiet and pretty... I don't know, it's one of my favorites. As far as the buses, I know I've never had a problem... :confused3

Honestly, the dislike of it baffles me a bit.

If you have started, where are you in your training? I'm still in lung recovery mode so running 3 slow miles for another week or two before I increase mileage. I am still trying to decide whether or not to sign up for a 10k at the end of May.

Does anyone know what length of race I need to do to get a qualifying time for a corral? With ToT I was placed in corral B without a qualifying time, just based upon my estimate. But I think that is a smaller race.

The shortest race to obtain a qualifying time for a runDisney race is a 10K.

Nope - haven't started distance training yet. Just working on speed and pacing and having fun.... I won't go past 7 mile runs until July, at least in preparation for the W&D. That could change if I sign up for something else in between.

Historically it has been a 10k or longer race. Good luck!

Well I just ran the Princess Half 2 weeks ago, so I'm all ready right now. I'm going to ease up a bit in my training and spend some time working on speed rather than distance. I'm hoping not to lose too much off my distance though. I might drop back to the 7-8 mile range for my long runs for now. I'll start marathon training in July, I think, for my full in Dec. Unless I find something I just have to do, I won't do any races longer than a 10k until the fall, though I am on the fence about a local half at the beginning of April. W&D is 5 weeks before my full, so I won't really be doing any training just for W&D.

I'm still on mile 2. But substituting strength training in there so I can hopefully increase soon both distance & speed.

It's my goal to be back up to a 5K by end of March..with a decent per mile rate (12 minutes). We'll see... I guess! :)

I guess I had better sign up for that 10k. Which will mean training starting in two weeks.

DH was able to qualify for corral A with a 5k race for ToT. But they were treating that like a much more informal race, I think, because of the odd distance.

I need to work on speed too! Maybe after my 10k I will do an 8 week speed-program. Hoping to drop another 5-8lbs too so I know that will make me a good 15 seconds faster per mile.

I started, but I'm ashamed to say that I was doing the http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half_marathon.html and I was on week 1, and I could do it just fine don't get me wrong, but towards about 20 minutes/30 minutes, I was just getting so sloppy in my run. Variable speeds, sloppy stance and posture, horrible breathing. I knew I wasn't learning anything or doing any good conditioning, it was just "getting through," not developing a strategy for race day. So, I'm almost embarrassed to say, I dialed it back and went to the conditioning program, but I found that to be far too easy for me physically, way too hard to train with 5 and 55, now I'm doing conditioning, 30/30 splits, for the time and miles suggested but at a pace that's higher then I'd do otherwise, and I'm having better luck physically finding my stride and I feel like I'm building a better foundation. Though I am now disappointed my weight loss has stalled as a result. I'm thinking doing a walk in addition while I'm on short runs.

That said, I'm feeling a tremendous amount of guilt over KNOWING I can do 30 mins, even an hour, but right now I'm only doing 12, 15, 18 minutes. I'm trying to justify it mentally that a GREAT 12 minutes that builds to 20 minutes at the end of the week is better then an hour where I struggle.

So... My schedule is what I linked, though with my major run on Sunday, working Friday, resting Saturday. I do cardio strength training on Mon-Fri, I push it on the walk days, but just maintain a conditioning HR on the run days so I'm not physically burned out.

I am using a training guide for 10 weeks that will get me to the 10 mile mark by May. I did 2 last week and nearly died since I haven't run since the W&D in Nov. Monday's 3 mile was actually much easier for me than last week. On this plan, Sunday is my "long" run each week. There is no way I could do a long run after work.

My goal is to feel comfortable at 8-10 occasionally over the summer and then work on increasing speed in the fall.

We are not booked at a host hotel (LM at AoA) Last year we stayed at AKL from Sun to Fri and then actually switched to Pop. I just could not see spending the $ to continue to stay at AKL when Fri to Mon were all about running/sleeping for us. Of course if I had the $ my dream would be to walk to the Beach Club after the race :lovestruc

I don't know that there's anything wrong with CBR, honestly! The theming appeals to me a lot. I'm honestly more concerned with the size of the resort. I haven't run a half yet, and I'm concerned that if they want to plop us in the far corner of the resort I'll be praying for death before I reach our room. :rotfl2: But, I had my heart set on, and already booked into, a preferred room at POR. This is the first time that my budget has comfortably allowed for a long trip in a mod or above, and I'm just disappointed. I was really hoping that my beloved Pop would be included if CBR were the only mod.

Yeah, I was kind of pulling for Pop too... I'm going to price it out, see what's cheaper, and then go from there. If it's cheaper to stay at Pop and grab a taxi, that's what I'll do. I can always bus it to a park, then the start of the race, right?

If they do it the same way they have been, you could take a bus to Epcot and then race transportation to the start with anyone who is driving their own vehicle (can't park at WWoS) and then taxi it back to Pop.

We stayed at the Plaza near Downtown as you couldn't beat the "friends of an employee" price :thumbsup2. We had a friend drive us to Epcot where we boarded the bus for WWoS :drive:. Then we all just drove back to the hotel after the party at Epcot . For what it cost to stay at the Plaza (which was nice and quiet all day Saturday and allowed for some great:cloud9: nappy time!:thumbsup2), I would do it again in a heartbeat, even if it meant having to pay for a taxi ::yes::. I probably would have done that last year, I just didn't know if there would be cab service available at Epcot at 4am. Did anyone do the taxi thing at 4am? Did you have to wait a long time for them?:confused3

Got signed up through get travel last night and booked All star sports though them too! Working on getting up to 10k right now since Disney has not updated training for the dumbo double date yet. I'm so ready for the next few months to fly by so we car get there!

Hmm. Never thought about registering through GET before an event opens.

Patiently waiting for their 'official' training plan myself. See how much different it is from mine.
