I set off an alarm in Macy's Herald Square store once.
Before I knew it there was a plainclothes store detective asking what I had in my bag.
When I told him, he said the checkout clerk probably forgot to remove a security tag.
We went an empty checkout station where he checked my invoice against the items in my bag. Satisfied that nothing was stolen, he checked all my items. Indeed, the checkout clerk had forgotten to remove a security tag, which he removed then and there.
He apologized for the inconvenience and thanked me for my patience and I was on my way.
Another time, my wife had bought some dresses/suits at the local Lord & Taylor store.
A day or two later, when getting dressed for work, she found an ink tag on her new outfit. Since I was goig that way, she gave me her receipt and asked me to take the outfit back to L&T and have the tag removed.
When I got to L&T, I stood in the women's dep't looking lost and pitiful (I really was!).
A clerk appeared to help me. When I told her what had happened, she said that she had to get a Manager. Needless to say, I expected a problem.
When the Manager came, he apologized profusely for the original clerk's "mistake," and told the clerk that day to refund 25% of the original purchase price for the "inconvenience" my wife and I were caused.
Nice gesture and we're now devoted L&T shoppers.
