There's nothing to lose
When no one knows your name
There's nothing to gain
And I just died today

In an article featured in 'What Magazine', Ben Kowalewicz wrote that 'Nothing to Lose' was written after reading about an Ontario teen who killed himself after being bullied at school.

Reading comments for that song...

ya this song is about a kid in my city (brampton) who killed himself after people bullied him and then someone gave him a quarter to go kill himself....he went to notre dame highschool or something

i know this because i saw the making of it and they said that it inspired them to make this video and that, but i heard that this song was made before this happened, but the inncident happened early 2002. but i know for sure that this single is for him

That's weird...

The kid hung himself...

Ben wrote a lot of songs like, based on someone elses viewpoint, like if you'll listen to "standing in the rain" you'll see it's about a hooker.

This song is really really sad. It obviously talks about a kid who kills himself because people bully him and he doesn't have any friends. I'm pretty tough, and this song even made me want to cry. In the end of the video, the guy kills himself by carbon monoxyde asphyxiation. That means he breathed in the poisonous fumes from the car. I never did it, so I wouldn't know, but it would probably hurt like hell.

Just to let you all know, because a lot of this stuff is wrong. Obviously its about someone who kills themselves for being bullied. Yes it was about a kid at Notre Dame Secondary School in Brampton. His name was not Eric, it was Greg. Someone did not give him a quarter to kill himself, they just told him that he would give him a quarter to do that. The same kid also told him that he just go hang himself, which he did. It was so sad when Greg died, its funny that no one really cares until your gone. R.I.P Greg...never be forgotton.

****in sad man. When I first heard this song was based on a true story about a kid that killed himself I felt so bad for him. Did any of you know that from the real story someone gave the kid a quarter to go kill himself? Any bullies out their pathetic and desevre to burn in hell for putting people through this ****.
From youtube...

Ya, i dont know if it was said before, to lazy to read, but what happened to the kid was this...
Somebody gave him a quarter to go kill himself, and this was after years of being picked on. He took the quarter, called his mom, asked her to sign out, saying he wasnt feeling well. She said fine. He said "thank you mom, i love you, see you later" He than went home, let his uncle leave to go to work, he went downstairs, tied a rope around the water pipes, put a chair on his pool table, stood on the chair, and jumped off, therefore hanging himself. It was horrible what happened to this young boy...

From lyrics site...where I got the others...and wow, that's sad...

i think its about chicken

and like he's so depressed that the chicken doesnt notice him and then they make their clucking sound and he thinks they are calling him a chicken and he gets depressed and the chickens give him 25 cents to kill himself and then once he was dead they took the 25 cents and went and bought some chicken food

...?

How do you kill yourself with that?

Hahahahahhaha :-D
You eat it ? :-P

Okay...

"One more thing...
If you pay attention to the video, in the character's notebook, you'll see that it's a picture of a person CRASHING INTO A WALL. The video is actually giving insturctions on how to kill yourself..."

Please stop speaking. If you paid MORE attention than that person, you would have noticed that there were two pictures in the notebook. One was of the car in the garage, and then the other was a profile of the car with a tube going from the exhaust into the window.

The text around the pictures is "I WILL DO IT I WILL SHOW YOU YOU WILL KNOW WHO I AM YOU WILL READ THIS AND KNOW WHO I AM MY DEATH WILL HEAL THE PAIN THERE'S NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE I CAN'T FIGHT THIS PAIN"

Other stuff the notebook says:

"I JUST DIED TODAY."
"THEY WILL KNOW WHO I AM WHEN I AM GONE."
"I CAN'T FIGHT THE PAIN ANYMORE"

Pretty depressing ****. Sucks because this stuff is happening everywhere...

When I saw the video I tried reading that...it was kind of hard since youtube makes stuff look all weird...it said "I can't fight this pain anymore"...the person that posted that forgot that last word, but whatever...I coud be thinking about a different page which says that second part...

This song touched me and many of my friends as well. The music video is sad as well and like most of you said it fits the song good.

Ben of Billy Talent read a newspaper article of a teenager who commited suicide because people were bullying him because of his acne. Then Ben and Ian wrote "Nothing To Lose".

"Nothing To Lose" is an awesome song and I think many people should listen to it.

"he killed himself by carbon menoxide put a pipe in ur exhaust turn on the car and close all the windows.......a gas u'll suffocate................cool way to die though painless....... "
-
Suffocating isn't painless, it's reallly... ugh

You can't breathe, and you can hold it for so long with the oxygen still in your body and you;'re not getting enoughm but you still live to feel it -.-

This song is truly amazing. It's so sad.
It's pretty obvious what it's about; someone being bullied and feeling like an outcast, so they kill theirselves.
Everyone already said this.

People suck. They don't realize how much they can hurt someone until that person is gone. It's sickening that someone could be bullied so much that they'd kill theirselves. Makes you wish you could go back in time and stick up for that person :/

I went to the BT concert on the 29th and although it doesn't give much insight to the meaning I think we've already established what this song is about.

Anyways, right before they played this song Ben was like "I want you guys to do something and I don't do this very often but everyone hold up your lighter or cell phone." and the whole place lit up just like that. It was so cool because it was all the blue from the cells mixed with the lighters. We were really far up so the whole crowd kinda lit up below us. And he was all "No matter what happens your never ever, EVER alone. We got your back." Then he started to sing Nothing to Lose. My fave part of the entire night even if I didn't like the song as much as I loved some of the others. And everyone kept their lighters and stuff up during the song and it was so cool.

So basically I think BT made this song so people who were depressed or thinking of suicide would know they aren't alone and no matter what there will always be someone who cares about them even if they don't think anyone does.

Different band: Coldplay played like, four times on SNL...they played Viva La Vida, Lost, Yellow and...on the last song, it went to commercial like two seconds after they started playing again...:confused3
