The "Newest" Moms Hangout...

Okay, is this really typical???

My cousin is 35 (so AMA, I think?) and was due 2/1. She went in today, expecting to be told they would induce her (since they'd talked about induction last week!) and her OB told her to round everyone up she is having a c-section at 12:30!!
They aren't even going to try to induce her?! Is that really typical? She is saying it is because baby didn't drop.
Lucas didn't drop! My OB still TRIED. I just think it's sad. :-/ She really didn't want a c-section.

DH is taking sick leave to come home and watch Lucas so I can head to the hospital...

*eta*
Her OB is the same one that was on-call when I had my gallbladder attack. The one that told me all I had was heartburn and there was no reason to go to the ER because I needed to learn pregnancy is painful and they wouldn't do anything for me but call her. grr...

So today is my first day all alone with Elliott. I thought I would totally hate having DH home all last week with me, but it was nice. We actually were able to get some work done in the house (cleaned out our storage room, 25 bags of trash ready to go out on garbage day!!). Unfortunately, I have been up since about 4:15 this morning, when E woke up (tried to go back to sleep, but couldn't, then my stepdaughter was up getting ready for school, and right when she leaves, DS is up getting ready). I am actually lonely right now! E is sleeping, and has been for 2 hours (AND, in his crib, too!! First time!), so I have done laundry, picked up, and was able to eat lunch before 3 in the afternoon (which had not happened up until this point!), and eat my lunch with BOTH HANDS!! (which has also not happened!). I have debated jumping in the shower, but I am going to wait now until he wakes up, so I can feed him first, and then I will put him in the bathroom in his bouncy seat. So much for thinking I was never going to get anything done!

BabyTigger - Sounds like you are having quite the productive day so far! That's great that your husband was home last week and you guys could accomplish so much. I have a long way to go with cleaning up around here!

I put my daughter in the bouncy seat in the bathroom when I shower too. Then I got out, was dressed and brushing my teeth and my son was talking to the baby. All of a sudden he walks up to me holding her in his arms saying "Look mama, see, I can pick her up all by myself!" He was so proud of himself but meanwhile I was panicking that he could have dropped her on her head on the slate floor!

Patsy - Some drs just prefer c-sections from what I hear. Did they check your cousin at all before making the decision to jump to a c-section? My only guess would be that maybe she wasn't dilated at all, her cervix wasn't thinning at all, or they think that since she's 41 weeks the baby is large?

Scarlett was very high too (though that is common with 2nd and beyond babies right up until delivery) and my cervix was not at all ripe, but my dr did start an induction anyway. And it worked very well, I was contracting every 2 minutes within 30 minutes of getting the Cervidil and nothing else. But still, she never dropped, but then when they found her cord presenting they knew why. I don't think they'd know that with your cousin yet though, so I don't know why they are going straight to a CS other than the guesses I have above.

But above all, I think it's just dr preference. My OB is big on forceps and tries to avoid doing a CS if at all possible. But the dr who delivered my son (same group, same hospital) is big on c-sections and was so close to doing on on that delivery when my son's heart rate was down. Valid reason, obviously, but my own OB tries forceps first (assuming it is safe and there is time).

No school here today cause of the snow build-up, and it is supposed to snow again tomorrow/Wednesday. I think I will shoot myself if my kids are out of school all week. I need some sort of rest time during the day right now and even with my husband here all week I just can't nap when my older kids are running around and yelling and it's too cold for them to go outside. Well, they could, but we'd have to go out with them being on the 2nd floor and it's too cold for us!

Alex had cereal for the first time last night! It was...interesting. :rotfl: He didn't mind the spoon at all, but the fun part was getting the cereal to stay in his mouth. He "ate" about half the bowl and then had enough.

When do you start making the cereal thicker? And when should we actually introduce food? One person said wait until you give cereal three times a day and then introduce food; another said once you get the cereal a little bit more thicker...

How old is he? Past 6 months, you can move off of cereal right away. Before 6 months, you should stick with the cereal for a week or two, making it a little thicker each time. Then start with the real food...veggies first.

If he sticks his tongue out and doesn't keep the food in his mouth, he may not be ready for solids. Even though Lily doesn't like very much right now, so still takes it in...until she realizes what it is. :)
We are in Orlando this week, today is freezing. Sunny and in the 50's... Burrr. We stayed at AKL on Friday and Lilliana feel off the bed and scrapped her little nose. She now has a scab covering her whole nose.

Poor baby!! I bet you were more upset than she was!

Wow! I still can't do any of that! :rotfl:

Piecey- Maybe normal, but so not right if the baby not dropping was all there was to it. Vivien didn't drop until literally about an hour before she was born (and I was overdue as well)! And I had a ******l delivery! I feel bad for her...I really wanted a "normal" delivery and was so happy I was able to avoid a c-section.

Babytigger99- Dang mama, you are doing good! I still consider it a miracle when laundry gets done around here and my daughter is seven months. Good for you!

I took my daughter to get some shots today. :( Gosh it still hurts my heart to take her to the doctor for shots. But we finally got H1N1 for her. I've been waiting for what feels like forever to find it. I feel much better knowing she has it, even though it seems like much of that has blown over (in our area, at least).

I saw another mama asking questions about solids, so here is mine. When do you start giving meats? Vivien has a nice long list of fruits and veggies so I'm wondering if it is time for meats yet. She's seven months. Any advice on which one tastes best/is accepted more readily?

I feel bad when stuff doesn't get done! I am TOTALLY not one to sit around and do nothing. There is no way I could EVER be a stay at home mom. I work a full time job, I have a part time job from October to the beginning of March, I am my son's Cub Scout Leader and Committee Chairman, I am the team manager for his travel soccer team, I am the Communications Coordinator for his football team, and I teach Sunday School. Yup, I like to be busy!

Hi girls. I have been out of town for the weekend and have been trying to catch up. While I was visiting my parents, I got a great deal at BRU. They are having a trade in event for 25% off, well, I got Natalie a Britax Marathon car seat reg. price $299 for $164. :goodvibes It was on sale from $299 to $219 then I got 25% off that. I love to get a good deal:thumbsup2

Hope everyone is doing well, I have a lot of catching up to do. Someone posted a question about when to feed meat? I have no idea. Natalie will be 8 months the end of next week and we are still on fruits and veggies. She loves them.

Yuck. Some of you that have been on here with me before may remember that we have 2 hospitals- 1 I hate, 1 I love. Cousin delivered at the one I hate (her dad and SIL work there, so it made sense for her!)

She sat in L&D triage (no room, just a curtained off area, no TV) for FOUR HOURS because the surgeon that was scheduled in the c-section OR refused to push his surgery back (he's a general surgeon)... her dad told her he pushes his weight a lot because they want to keep him at their hospital.
So she finally got taken to pre-op where she sat for another hour and a half. Then she finally had the c-section, we got to see the baby, and she went to recovery for over two hours! They told us if she took a hit of morphine they would keep her in recovery another half hour.

I was shocked. That was totally not my experience with Lucas AT ALL... and while DH has been pressuring me to deliver at that hospital (so I can get my tubes tied) there is NO WAY in the world I am doing it! I know it might not bother most people because it's all she knows but there is no way I could go from what I had with Lucas to that!
I was back in my room, with my family, 5 minutes after I got out of the OR. Tom and my parents were with me WHILE they hooked up my morphine drip.

Maybe I'm just crazy but I'd of really hated to go through all of that. :-/

Great deal MinnieFan!!

If anyone notices MacLaren's on clearance at BRU, let me know. I think that's what we'll get for WDW...maybe..or any other suggestions are welcome.

I don't really follow with the food timetables, so I'm not much help for starting meat, but I've read suggestions of anywhere from 6 mos-1 year. I think after the veggies and fruits are good, that I'd start. Just stay away from hot dogs. They seem like the perfect thing, but they have sooo much junk in them.

So Lily is actually sort of eating pears...at least she isn't throwing them up! ;-) And I gave her a chunk of banana today and she had fun making a mess and spitting most of it out...but again no gagging or throwing up.

Patsy--that's crazy!! I would never want to deliver there!

harleyquinn- haven't seen any maclarens on sale but just wanted to let you know we LOVE ours. I use it constantly. Honestly I shouldn't have even bought the big stroller we also have since we always use the maclaren.

Found this site a few weeks ago when I was looking up a "timetable" for introducting foods. Looks like an interesting site and seems like a compilation of quite a few different resources.

Alex ended up with a tummyache after two days on cereal so we are holding off for a another week or two just to be safe. Also we are almost through my freezer stash, so he may getting formula during the day with the sitter. I can only make 10oz during the day and he eats 16oz with her sometimes. My goal was 6 months and I'm almost there! I'm not going to stop BFing though.

Which one do you have?

I actually use that site! I'd use it more if Lily would eat anything!

How long are you away from him? In 8 hours, he should only be drinking about 8-10oz of bm...12 tops...a lot of sitters overfeed breast fed babies.

Soo.. this is just a question, please don't read it as criticism...

But am I the only one that doesn't follow all that stuff? I don't read books/webpages/pamhplets or any of that to figure out what to do with Lucas.
I read a little when I was pregnant and it just wasn't for me.

Lucas isn't typical and I had a hard time using that stuff as a reference. Some stuff says babies won't overeat, but the link Sarah just posted says that they can be overfed. It makes my head spin! How do you choose which to follow?

Lucas isn't on a schedule (other than his 1 daily nap)... he gets a bottle when he acts hungry. Some days he'll eat 30oz, some he'll eat over 40oz. I don't give him baby food everyday and sorta wish I would have skipped that stage all together. I've started giving him whole green beans, bread, toast, crackers, steamed carrots, etc... If I see something simple in the kitchen I'll usually give him some of it (dairy excluded)...
I just can't do what those books want. Or even the WIC people. They scold you about juice before 1yr, they want them to eat jarred baby food 3x a day- I don't have it in me to do that so I don't. Lucas still eats and I'm fairly certain he'll grow up just fine... Maybe I'm wrong, though.

We pretty much do our own thing, too, Patsy. She is on a schedule at daycare, but at home we follow her lead.

I liked reading the suggestions but I didn't always follow them to the letter. I nurse LO 7-8 times, give him 5-6 jars of food, and a handful of little puffs or mum-mums. He's able to feed himself the puffs and mum-mums and enjoys squashing the bananas and other bits we give him.

I enjoy having them on a schedule. I think they both respond to it and crave it. Although there are days when there is variation, say we go out to lunch or someone naps in the car on a trip, I know what to expect out of them and how to plan my day. I think having 2 close together without a schedule would be impossible.

We introduced chicken noodle dinner to DS (8m) but he wasn't very happy after. I can't blame him! It was awful. Yellowfish, what cereal did you give? Your DS may be upset from the type or blend. You could try the oatmeal or whole grain instead of rice.

You could try the oatmeal or whole grain instead of rice.

I was going to suggest this as well. Isabelle got constipated really bad (I know, TMI) with rice cereal, but the oatmeal or whole grain cereals are doing great at keeping things regular for her. I usually give her oatmeal in the a.m, and the whole grain in the p.m, just to keep variety in there for her.

Thanks! We started with rice, he wasn't constipated though. I'll pick up a box of oatmeal this week.

Sarah, he was eating 12oz with her (2 5-6oz bottles) but recently started taking only one 8oz bottle with her. She said he's much happier. He's with her for about 8-9 hours.
As for Alex being "regular" we are lucky he goes every 4 days! I know BF babies are different but my goodness, his diapers are FULL!

Patsy - I use them as more for information... I like knowing what's to come? I don't follow them to the T, but I hate being surprised I guess.

You guys know I have to read everything...it's the librarian in me. :thumbsup2 The thing is I read so much that I know that there really is no right answer. Like Patsy said, you honestly can find two exact opposite answers for every question.

The only time I really try to stick with "rules" is when it comes to breastfeeding, because it can be so bad if little things are done incorrectly. Of course happiness overrides just about any rule. i just don't want a babysitter killing your bfing relationship by overfeeding.

Anytime I offer up an "answer" it's more just info I have come across. My sleep issues show that I really have absolutely no clue what I'm doing!

And I totally agree that reading and trying to follow rules can make bad situations worse. I have to remind myself that everytime we talk about sleep, and I see that all of your 6mo+ are sleeping in cribs for most if not all night, while Lily still sleeps with me and gets up usually 1-3 times.:scared:

Sarah - Alex still gets up at least 2-3 times a night still and he's in a crib (he's almost 22 weeks now?)...he's down by 7:30p-8pm and then up around 11p and 3a to eat. He's up for good around 7am with me though since I'm out the door by 8am.
So you're not alone in the night waking! :teeth: I'm right there with ya!

I don't really follow all the "rules". But I do have Natalie on a schedule. She goes to bed the same time every night, give or take 15 minutes. She wakes up between 7 and 8 am every morning and goes to bed around 8 pm. She eats lunch and dinner the same time everyday which is fruit or veggies and a bottle. Her naps are around the same time everyday too. 10:30 am for 45 min to an hour and her afternoon nap is around 2ish and is a 2 hour nap, sometimes longer is she played a lot that day. I REALLY like having her on a schedule because it is soooo much easier for me to plan out our day. Since she is an only child I think it is easier to keep a schedule. If there we two it would be much harder!
