FYI, my explanation was on page 91 of the last thread...
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=458449&perpage=15&pagenumber=91

Here is a picture of your BOX
B-715.gif

as pictured, the top plug goes to the wall, and the bottom plug goes to your computer.

Q#1-do you want to use both computers???
Q#2-do you want to copy files from one computer to the other???

regagardless of your answers, if you want to use the wireless stuff you will need a radio "thingy"

your computer has a "G" radio in it, so I would make sure that you get a "G" radio thingy. (the "B" will work but is slower and may need to have some settings changed. The "A" won't work at all)

I recommended a linksys WRT54G:
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=577
CompUsa sells them for $99.00 each. Hopefully, all you will have to do is plug a wire from the "Ethernet" plug on your "Box" into the "Internet" plug on this radio thingy and it will all work. you can also buy another cable and plug your current computer into the back (there are 4 pluggy holes for other things like computers and network printers)

OK? if it doesn't work, Linksys has free 24hour a day support...or you can write me for some further things you may have to do...sometimes you have to get rid of old settings when you install a new blocker.

Hey everybody! No time for chit-chat, gotta speak directly to Ohanafamily. Dear friend, thanks for the quick-study again. I am absolutely fine with what you have recommended. FYI, the available hole on my cable router thingie is the USB one, will the new accesspoint thingie plug into that? To answer your questions, yes we will want both computers hooked up and maybe on the transferring files stuff. IF we can figure out how to do such a thing, there are some things we might want to send over.

We may get to CompUSA today, so I will check back in a little while to see if you think this will work. Thanks again!

llebrekniT, This is actually ohanafamily I was just about to step into the shower, and got sidetracked. You will need to buy another "Ethernet" cable at CompUsa. Move the cable from the "Ethernet" connector on the "Box" to the "Internet" connecter on the new Linksys (Broadband Router). You can then plug the computer into one of the 4 places in the Linksys thingy.

If you just buy an accesspoint (Linksys makes one of those as well) it will not have an "Internet Port" on it, and I don't remember whether or not it has the 4 holes (ports) on it. At any rate, the accesspoint costs the same as the BroadBand router, and if the router won't work you can "Turn that part off".

The reason I suggested the Linksys is that HP sells them with your computer, so it is most likely to work best out of the box.

It is a little complicated to get the computers to talk to one another, that is a much longer (and more tchnical) discussion.

One other thing I forgot to mention, I always enable the security on my wireless stuff, it keeps the neighbors from using my network. Most people don't bother, especially with nice neighbors...We went to a party Friday Night and it was explained to me that he ordered his mom a digital camera online, but had to go by her bedroom window to use the neighbors wireless internet.....

Have fun!!!!!

GOOD MORNING!!!

Sorry I've been away so long, but I have had a crazy couple of days. It seems like Christmas was 2 weeks ago (although my house still looks like Christmas morning). I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, I sure did! DSIL's wedding was a lot of fun. I stayed out too late last night, though. DD-1 Lainie was such a trooper. We didn't get home from the rehearsal dinner until 11pm on Friday, & we were out until midnight last night at the reception. DS-Josh was the best ring bearer I have seen since October 27, 1997. That of course was my wedding day, when llebrekniT's DS-Daniel was the ring bearer. Anyway, I don't know if there was some magic in his shoes, or what, but when his feet hit the dance floor, he was a madman. He danced & danced & danced. They band was very good, they mainly played motown. Lots of fun was had be all. Oh, I almost forgot...llebrekniT's DD-Holly was the most beautiful flower girl I have ever seen. I took some pics, but I haven't had a chance to upload them yet. I will try to post some pics tonight.

Welcome to the Tagliarchy Buckleybunch, disney_girl27 & Tigger&Tink!

OK, so how about a new question....What did you get this year for Christmas/Hannukah?

I got a couple of new sweaters, 6 new DVD's (Bruce Almighty(2), Scarface, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Clueless, & Valley Girl), a new pair of Born shoes (super comfy), a neck massager, a necklace, a pair of earrings, some other clothes & a bunch of candy. Since I received 2 copies of Bruce Almighty, I'm going to exchange one for Seabiscuit.

Have a great day everyone, I have missed you over the last few days!!!!

I didn't get a whole lot for Christmas- I normally don't...
I did order myself a Cinderalla Tree Topper that my oldest daughter wanted to get me. I was a little disappointed in it. The face isn't as pretty as I thought it would be.
My mom finally gave me a roasting pan that I have been eyeballing since last year. Then I purchased a set of Mickey Luggage for my husband and I . :)

Hey, how about breakfast at Chef Mickey's?

Let's see, I got 2 new pairs of Sweat Pants, An emergency hammer/seatbelt cutter, a puzzle, and Oh, did I mention I ordered myself a new laptop (tablet PC).

I'm in for Chef Mickey's!! I'm always in for Chef Mickey's!

Ok Ohanafamily, after I posted I re-read what you said and thought that maybe I took the wire out of the ethernet spot and put the Linksys there, but it sounds like I am just getting rid of the router box I currently use altogether? Then the new thing, which I looked over via your link takes its' place and "does it all", including sending out the signal to DH's new laptop to connect wirelessly? Am I following you or totally lost? So, if I'm following you I don't really need to deal with the cable company at all, do I? I do want to get a firewall blocker thingie so tell me what you think a good one is.

Deadheadbelle already knows what I got, but I'll answer anyway. I got many pieces of jewelry, no one piece of it over $100 except this one beautiful bangle that DH got me. I also got new dinnerware and some clothes and my DS managed to bring back a couple of picture frames I was admiring at WDW. Oh yeah and a really nice Krups coffee maker. Try some <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/12/12_4_38.gif' border=0></a>, makes a great cup of caffeine!
:wave2:

We're getting close...

On your "Box" (see picture above) the top round plug connects to the wall (somehow to your cable system)
Upper Middle plug plugs into a wall electrical outlet.
Lower Middle (USB) hole isn't connected to anything.
Lower Hole will have a "Oversized Phone Cord" (called an Ethernet cable) going to the Linksys thingy (far left hole) that will be labelled "Internet"

The Linklsys thingy has a radio and other holes to plug in your computer (that's why you will need another cable) You can plug the new cable into any one of the 4 holes (ports labeled 1 2 3 4) and that goes into the back of your computer.
There is also a power plug on the linksys thingy.

There is a "Quickstart guide" that comes with the Linksys thingy that will tell you how to set it up.....

After you follow the guide, your new laptop should find the internet over the radio.....

Just Remember to tell the salesperson...
Linksys 802.11G BroadBand Router......

I hope this helps...

I got a tv and dvd player for my room, GC to Wal-Mart(means more dvd's), clothes, Linkin Park's "Live in Texas" cd/dvd, all 5 HP books in hardback,2 dvd's of X-men Evolution, Kim Possible: Secert Files dvd,and POTC dvd

Deadheadbelle, I saw Seabiscuit for the first time on Xmas Day. My husband's first cousin (she lives in Lexington, too) was an extra in the War Admiral match race scene. We watched it on DVD so she could pause it and go frame by frame, etc. She was able to spot her hat at the beginning of the race. So we teased her about how central she was to the whole plot. If it hadn't been for that hat, Seabiscuit would never have won!:p

As for the question--I got a ton of good loot for Christmas. I got Quidditch World Cup for my GameCube, Harry Potter 2 and The Princess Bride on DVD, a pasta machine, a convection/toaster oven (to share with DH), a very cool red pleather wallet, several books, a rolling pin and some baking pans, and gift cards and ca$h with which I bought some clothes, Urban Decay makeup and 3 more DVDs. Quite a haul this year!:teeth:

Ohanafamily - HELP! I was looking at Amazon and they have a good offer on the Linksys but they have one that says for notebook - Linksys WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adapter - is this necessary? Or do I just get the exact one you showed me? Also, so I do keep the router the cable company provided me with?

I'll be back!

Can you believe the nerve of that guy? Running off and leaving me with questions still unanswered! I'm completely lost without his help, can't go forward. I'll just sit here<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15_4_101.gif' border=0></a>, waiting for his return..........

So,<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_12_1.gif' border=0></a>, has everyone taken down their Christmas decorations <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/8/8_2_71.gif' border=0></a>yet? The outside is done here and the inside is about 80% cleaned up. I love getting the decorations up and usually do so Thanksgiving weekend. But after Christmas I want it all put away! We're almost done.

Hmmmmmmm, oh - I know, does anyone have any big plans for New Years Eve?<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/8/8_6_13.gif' border=0></a> Good question if I do say so myself.:teeth: We are having DH's family over, including Deadheadbelle, but NOT including Nancy-pants. They wouldn't come anyway, they will be going to a much bigger and better party no doubt.

Still no Ohanafamily. Where could he be?

I found a smilie I really like, thought this would be as good a time as any to share it - enjoy!<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/1/1_4_32.gif' border=0></a>

Well, I do have stuff I could do. So, guess I'll just check back in later. If you guys see my techie-buddy, let him know I'm looking for him. Bye!

NYE-
WE are going to a dueling piano bar. Not that I enjoy bars.. but it's a lot of fun. We haven't gone out for years so I"m am looking forward to this time..
