This was one of my favorite subjects, even prior to staying at the Dolphin for the first time last week. :goodvibes

We participate in a medieval recreation organization. princess: This is how Dolphins were depicted in medieval heraldry:

If you scroll down a bit, you'll see a dolphin "torqued", looking much like the status on the top of the Dolphin resort (and like Bernini's Fountain of Triton, which was the inspiration mentioned in the articles above). Dolphins began appearing like this on shields and crests as early as the 13th century.

How cool was THAT?! Thanks for sharing!!! :cheer2:

I really don't think Michael Graves intended them to be dolphin fish.

From the Yesterland article linked above, from a conversation with Disney historian Jim Korkis - from a conversation he had with Michael Graves, the lead architect:

"The dolphin image was inspired by the work of Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. "

Art historians will tell you that Bernini was inspired when he created the Fountain of Triton in the 17th century by heraldic dolphins, as I mentioned above. It's how people in the past represented the mammals. They didn't widely know about "dolphin fish" in the 13th through 17th centuries.

I think perhaps people jumped to what they thought was a logical conclusion since they statues don't look like "real" dophins. But I had read a long time ago that they were inspired by Bernini's dolphins.

Nothing to do with the achitecture of the S/D, but just wanted to share this with others, who like me, may not have been aware- If you are PLATINUM with SPG, the resort fee is waived.
I understand this is a recent change.

Thanks, Sue - that's good to know. However, it's all I can do to requalify for Gold each year!

I am soooooo excited. After a long time away from my favorite resorts I am proud to say we are going back to the Dolphin in October!
Just had to share my joy with all of my fellow S/D lovers! Can't wait to be back HOME!

Hello! This is my first post, but I have been reading this thread for some time. We are planning a Nov 10 trip to the S/D and are very excited about it. I'm thinking we will be staying at the Dolphin on SPG points.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a height restriction for the slide at the pool? My DD is 38in right now, and can swim just fine, but is often restricted on slides because of her height.

Thanks for the help!!

Angie :yay:

Hi Angie,

Welcome. Great thread to start on. It may have changed since I was there, but there weren't any height restrictions when we were there last.

Welcome to the DIS, Angie, and the S/D thread.

I had that coveted platinum level for one year, it was great. Right now, gold.

Subscribing. We have a reservation for 10 days at wilderness lodge and are thinking of switching to the dolphin.

Ooooh....two of my top three resorts. If I were you, I'd do a split. 5 days at WL, 5 Days at Dolphin. Then you get the best of both worlds. I find switching resorts, extremely easy - I've done it for even one night - and it feels like you're on two different vacations.

we did a WL/Dolphin split Christmas of '05. While the WL was perfectly themed for Christmas, man, we could not WAIT to get back to the Dolphin! Just like the brighter rooms, location, food ( we were not fans of the greasy options at RF cafe)SERVICE! That being said I am glad we tried it, but we did a 3/5 split...3 nights @ W/L was plenty, 5 @ the Dolphin was not enough! Now if we could afford to be back at CR or Poly..then a 5/5 split would be a dream, just not a W/L fan, I guess when I am in Fl, I am looking for the tropics :goodvibes

Welcome Angie! :wave2:

Zuzu..just want to say you have my almost DREAM STAY planned if your ticker is right...if I could split one 3 ways, to add MK Tower view at CR in thtere, OMG...heaven :lovestruc
Have an AWESOME trip!

A split stay between WL and dolphin does sound like a good idea.I am wondering if we stay at WL 1st we could get the Magic express transportation, although I am not sure how that would work for our return?

We stayed at Pop Century last August/September. On our arrival, the Magical Express bus stopped at the Dolphin and I swear someone got out.

I stayed at the Dolphin in February 2008 and the ME was unavailable. Can people pay for it now? Or did something unusual happen on my ME bus?

Also, can AAA cards be used for discounts at the Dolphin and Swan restaurants and shops?
