We however did not. To all of you with a booked GV room and not having some kind of magical fairy follow you around (or evidently having a great travel agent! ) please don't go to Disney expecting any kind of upgrade. We not only didn't get any kind of upgrade we got put in Sago Cay which is the only building that is not refurbished. ALSO if you have a GV be sure to put in the request you want, because the idea that you leave no request and this will give you upgrade opportunities if for the birds. I don't have any clue how or why certain people get upgraded and on this board it seems that EVERYONE gets an upgrade, but we just did not. Channing and I had the same discount, so I gotta believe that didn't have anything to do with it. It was noted on our reservation that we were celebrating our 15 year anniversary (and in today's world, I think that quite a feat!!:rotfl: ). When we checked in we asked politely and nicely if it was possible to get a refurbished room. The girl smiled and said "we have you in building 5". Which of course, I knew was the only one not refurbished. So I sucked it up and we waited for our room to be ready. After all Channing and lots of others told me not to worry, no bad GV rooms!! Well when our room wasn't ready at 4:15 we had to go to dinner at the MK for our 4:30 reservation at CP. We didn't come back until around 11 pm to find out that our room 5121 was on the ground floor right next to the elevator in Sago Cay. It is funny because if you look back the only thing I ever posted that I really wanted was a higher floor and non smoking and hopefully a refurbished room(oh and I did really want to split my kids sleeping so I wanted a bench which is WHY I didn't request a higher floor since the dormer rooms do not have the extra bench bed.) I mean think of all the rooms in GV that AREN"T on the ground floor! I figured the odds were good that I would at least have a good chance of being off the ground level. Nope!

When we went to open the curtain and see our balcony we opened the door and a whoosh of smoke smell just filled the room. I guess our balcony is right outside a bench where people smoke. Don't know if this is a designated spot, but clearly someone was just smoking. Again, ironically the only thing our reservation as far as requests had was NON smoking since my DD has a severe alergy to smoke. So it was 11:30 at night and my daughter started coughing and my husband who has "sound senitivity" was up all night with the humming of the elevator. I cried myself to sleep! Very big let down for "upgrading our resort".

Now we are not frequent GF guest but we come to Disney once a year, so my husband went down the next morning and again nicely asked if there was any way we can move to a refurbished room on a higher floor away from an elevator. He explained that this was our 15 year anniversary and that we were splurging and his wife cried herself to sleep so any help would be appreciated. They said they would move us. So we packed up and put our luggage with Bell Services just to be told that we wouldn't have a room until after three but our luggage would be in our new room. At about three we called from Epcot and were told they put us in 5320. SO we got moved across the hall from the elevator and up two floors. It was more quiet and no chance of smoke, so my hubby was happy. I of course looked out and saw the view. While my kids were thrilled to see the monorail, I of course saw the maintenance trucks and we got to listen to them backing up! Then we look out over the pond and get to look at this big yellow tractor. Not very magical so again I cried myself to sleep, but at this point there was nothing we could do. We did go on to have a good trip. Weather was perfect. Warm, swimming weather and cold on our last night for the MVMCP. That party is AWESOME! The resort was nice. I liked Gasparillas, hated those stinking Golf carts EVERYWHERE. We always had one parked in front of our building and had to dodge them quite a bit! We sat in front of Gasppy's to watch the fireworks and had at least six carts pass us during the 10 minute show.

OK I know I sound sour, but reading this thread it is very hard not to get the impression that this resort is Grand and magic happens here. It just didn't happen for us. My DH said if I hadn't read these boards I probably wouldn't have been so dissappointed in our room(s). He is right of course, so to those of you dreaming of an upgrade - or at least a refurbished room- don't do it!

One last thing. While I was crying in the bathroom the Bellhop guy came with our luggage (which they assured us would be in our second room and we wouldn't have to call for, but of course we had to call!) he told my DH that he was sorry I was upset but that Disney Management was having a conference and of course they took up two of the refurbished buildings. Just bad luck on our part.

We probably won't be back to the GF. We can't afford RPC or Sugar Loaf, and I didn't really need those things, I just really wanted the refurbished room. Channing and others had told me there were very few bad views.... Just my luck I got one of those! We didn't bother taking a picture of our room since it was the old version. Do have a picture of our lovely tractor view though!

Channing very glad you got upgraded. You probably would have hated the GV rooms!

Oh yeah, Mousekeeping was great. No extra soaps or anything, but the room was clean and turn down each night. They did bring me up clean towels quickly if we needed extra because we went swimming a couple of days.

OK thats my review! Hope everyone has a wonderful trip coming up over the holidays. The gingerbread house was lovely! Sorry if I sound sour, just want you GV people to make sure you put in a request for what you want and then try not to be dissappointed if you don't get it.

Here are some pictures of the view from 5320!

By the last day of our trip the tractor was moved..... Disney Management was at the resort, so I gotta believe that had something to do it.

I'm sorry you weren't happy with you garden view. What days were you there? We were there from Nov 8 to Nov 13. I know how you feel about not getting an upgrade. MickeyMaz was there the same exact days as we were and they were upgraded to Sugar Loaf. What makes them decide who gets an upgrade, I will never know. They also tried to put us in Sago, back of the building which I know faced the conference building and I was afraid it was one of those rooms I've read about but the CM's were really nice and took a long time to find us another room. It was a room with the pull out couch for 5 people even though we were only 4, 9813 in Big Pine. The room was beautiful but it was right above the entrance way on the roof line so our balcony had a solid railing and a roof below us and the pool house roof was directly in front of us blocking our view but if you stood to the left of the balcony you saw the pool or stood to the right you saw the lagoon between the buildings. Even though the room location was not the best we still loved the GF and all the CM's and would definitely go back in a minute. I think checking in at 7:00 pm had a lot to do with it but I wish we had MickeyMaz's luck with the upgrade to SL. Our Channing's luck with the upgrade to RPC.

Channing, I think it's great that you come on and visit us while your at the GF. Thank you so much for your live reports!!! I love them....wish I were there!!:goodvibes

I know from reading the thread you would think everyone gets an upgrade. In reality I believe for the most part the norm is everyone gets what they book.

It seems for the most part the GF takes care of their repeat/frequent travelers. A lot of hotels do special things and even keep rooms aside for their top travelers. And I think some people are just lucky!

I'm glad they were able to move your family from the ground floor. Of course it didn't help that 2 buildings were being used for management. You would think they would let their guest enjoy the newly remodeled buildings.

Overall I hope you and your family had an enjoyable vacation. Thanks for sharing your story, hopefully your experience will help others.

Heyyyyyy KELLY...

I'll have what Channing's having!! :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl:

Heck I will be happy just not to have to move to the poly our last night:rolleyes:

Cmbar
I am so sorry about your stay at the GF and I hope you still had a good time at the parks and with your family. I hope you will give the GF another chance.

Here are a couple of room shots from SugarLoaf 6114. We tended to keep the curtains closed because we were in the room to the left of the Quiet Pool entrance and it felt a little public. Still nice rooms considering our original reservations were for GV. Excuse the mess.

I wish everyone could have as nice a trip as we did. It's tough to live through the disappointment sometimes, but in WDW there is usually a surprise to get your smile back just around the corner. Good luck for you guys going down soon.

That is sooo neat! We didn't get a chance to see her, but we were told that she was staying in the Walt Suite. I was looking out for her...she is one of my favorites.

We also met an NBA retired basketball player...I forget his name at the top of my head, but my son has his autograph...I'm not a sports kind of person to remember all their names. But he was quite nice and polite when my husband approached him. We sat and talked for about 20 minutes.

We have also seen...William Shatner and Dan Marino (I remembered his name), who is absolutely gorgeous and I didn't know who he was until my husband said so. My husband had drinks at Mizners Lounge sitting next to Larry King.

We have seen many celebs in the GF...I would have to sit and think to remember them all!!:)

That's alot of celebrities! We also saw Melissa Joan Hart that same trip! The only other celebrity we've seen is Brett Favre- on one of our firtst trips.
I wonder who the retired b-ball player was? I guess that was celebrity week at the GF!:)

cmbar: I'm so sorry that you had such a bad room. I don't really expect an upgrade and would certainly not be disappointed if I didn't get one, but I'd be sooooo upset if I was assigned to the room you had. My DS also suffers from severe allergic reactions to cigarette smoke, so that alone would really be unacceptable for us.Thanks for sharing with us, even if the report was not good :sad1: . It sounds like the rest of your trip went well, so that's the good news!

I really am glad to hear that the GF, even if not officially, does seem to take care of return customers. As often as we've stayed at the GCH concierge level at Disneyland, I never felt as though they ever knew who we were or how many times we'd been there. We certainly never received any upgrades!

I always feel bad when the boards give the impression that everybody gets a free upgrade. In all our trips it's only happened once - and it was at the Poly not the GF. We got an upgrade from gv to MK view. I don't know if it was because we were repeat Disney and Poly visitors or if it was because DH was celebrating his 50th birthday, or just plain luck.

We've always requested Sago Cay, marina side. I was disappointed when we were there for the 4th of July in 2005. At that time you could only reserve lagoon view, not MK view rooms and I had requested Sago Cay MK view. We got there and at first we were going to have a room that faced the lagoon with the Poly straight ahead. We were there for two weeks and I almost cried, the kids had been so looking forward to seeing the castle from our room. I begged and they did finally find us a room in Big Pine Key that had a lagoon view. After the first week they were able to move us to Sago Cay with a dead on view of the castle and it was so much better.

We are booked at GF in January with a gv room and I'm just requesting a marina view and hoping for the best. We are celebrating dd's 9th birthday and my 50th but I'm guessing that with the marathon we won't be getting upgrades so I'm not even thinking about it.

Hope you get another stay at GF and it works out better for you.

Thanks for all the comments. I have to say that although I was dissappointed and of course, my DH felt terrible that I was dissappointed, my kids loved the monorail view. My DS wants desperately to learn to drive the monorail one day and he got to have a long chat with a really nice lady monorail driver when sitting in the front to Epcot. So for my kids it was magical and that means the world to me. The staff was really nice too. We tend to be people that go with you "get more by being nice instead of mean and insistent", so we just didn't have it in us to insist we get a refurbished room, just was hoping they would have at least given us a better room in Sago when assisgned the second room after my DH asked really nicely at 9am! Felt like I was being punished when in reality it probably wasn't anything but just the situation. I really liked many things about the resort, but it just ended up being "unmagical". I really hope everyone else has a nice time and possible great upgrades.

Channing thanks for the kind words. I really am very happy you were upgraded and you really deserve that upgrade as much as you frequent the GF! I really am keeping it all in perspective, just when you plan for almost a whole year, there is bound to be a let down. As someone mentioned there were plenty of magical moments like the Bus driver who drove us directly to AKL for our dinner reservation just after we checked out our new room. I was still teary eyed and thinking we were going to miss our reservation when the bus driver at GF said where you going and we said we need to go to a park and switch to AKL, whats the best way and he smiled and said "hop on, I'll take you since I am going that way". My husband had stopped to say a prayer just before we left with the kids "that we would still have a wonderful trip even though Mommy is dissappointed". Then the busdriver did his magic and the kids all smiled and said "see mommy there is still magic". It was a moment for our family and one I won't forget!

Oh and we did check in around 1pm so I don't think timing had anything to do with it. The problem was our room wasn't ready before we had to leave at 4:30 for me to realize that we had a crappy room. Same thing the second day since they wouldn't tell us our room until after 3pm and we had requested a move at 9am, but that was the day the management was coming in. Oh well. I think we will try the Poly next time we go for a monorail resort.

At least I didn't have as bad as luck as my girlfriend who stayed at BWV. They had an awful 1st timer experience. I am going over to that board to report for her. Felt so bad, since I recommended she do DVC at BWV. UGH!

Triplefigs... So glad to hear Rees is going home! My kids also reminded me of him when I was sad. At least we aren' t in the hospital like little Rees- who we have been praying for! I hope your next trip to Disney if filled with lots of magic and health!

Does anyone know when management is leaving the GF? If they are still there in Dec. when I go they better not mind having me and DD bunk up with someone in Boca Chica! (preferably a manager that resembles Orlando Bloom)
Kelly, let them know ;)

What?! We get to choose to have an Orlando Bloom lookalike for a roomy?? I'll have one please!! :rotfl:

We'll be at the GF Jan 10th-17th...

How early in advance do you need to book an afternoon at the spa?

Also, we requested theme park view, is there any specifics we should ask for in terms of a really fantastic view?

THANK YOU :)

I'm pretty sure they are probably already gone. They were there for a conference for about four days. We saw them everywhere and couple of them stopped us. They asked us to do a skit where we said we had just been to Universal and had a lousy time. We did it, but we are not actors in our family and to be honest this was just after the room situation so I wasn't all happy they walked up to us and said "hi we are Disney management and we were hoping you could do us a favor". I wanted to say "hey, you stole our buildings..:rotfl: "

Oh and someone asked when Sago is being refurbished. I believe the lady checking us in said it was starting on the 25th. So for the lucky person checking in on the 25th you will most probably get a refurb room! :wizard: Here's some pixie dust for ya!

If you want something at the spa I would call now and book it.

Did you book a theme park view room? They book those now so you would need an upgrade. Theme park doesnt mean the castle it means the lagoon with any of the park so. If theres something you want I would call and add it your reservation.

I totally would have said something rude to them - so it's a good thing it was you and not me. (I have a disorder where I can't keep my mouth shut when something makes me mad - the disorder is called "being from New Jersey"):thumbsup2

:lmao: :rotfl:

My mom is from New York and if she had been with us it would have been said for sure. She said she didn't teach me well. Only a Mom from Jersey or New York would feel they have failed if your NOT rude!

Channing, you will have to let me know how the crowds are during this time....I'm looking into making plans.

1. Are parks crowded?
2. How crowded is RPC during certain times of the day.
3. Is the hotel mobbed with visitors?

These are my three questions I'd like to know. So I gave you a bit of work...but don't stress if you can't answer right away...have a great time!:goodvibes I look forward to hearing all about your trip!!

Lives4Disney,

If it's not too much trouble, since you seem to know all the GF VIP's;) , could you find out from a reliable source the date Sago will start renovations?

I've heard 11/25, the day we arrive, but I'm still nervous...

If anyone else can also confirm--I'd REALLY appreciate it!:goodvibes
