the neverending problem of CS at HS

sooooo. this is my deal. we are on the basic dining plan

We have a 4:55 pm ADR at Hollywood and Vine. DH loves basic buffet food and after a week of eating what he considers "wierd food" I know it will be perfect for him. We plan to eat breakfast in the room. That leaves us a counterservice for a mid to late morning lunch.

I do not think ANYTHING looks appetizing at the counterservice places at HS.
should we

1. just snack. OOP Turkey legs. fries, hot dogs ect.

2. take the time to zip over to DTD and eat at Wolfgang Puck Express

Have you eaten at starring rolls? Ham or turkey sandwich, bag of chips and a bakery cake. We enjoyed it and will eat there again.

I wouldn't waste time going out of the park.

We also thought the food was ok at backlot express (on a par with cosmic rays) and pizza planet.

I second Starring Rolls - great food and awesome desserts! Also, I like Backlot and get the veggie sandwich there, it's tasy as is the cheesecake for dessert.

Why not just eat a larger breakfast and wait till your early dinner. Other than Starring Rolls, which has a way to limited menu, I have no desire to eat anything anywhere at DHS, especially ABC Commissary. A mid day snack may be enough. :confused3

Agree. No such thing as "zipping". Spend more time enjoying HS. The food you find will be okay. And you don't have to do the dishes like you would at home!

:thumbsup2 I must admit, we often do leave DHS for food BUT we leave when we are ready to leave, not with intentions of grabbing a bite and returning. I have seen that DHS have revamped some of their CS menus and we will definitely be giving a couple of places a try this trip. Put it this way, if I wanted to stay at DHS and really needed to eat, I would eat there.

I also recommend Starring Rolls. If you are having an early dinner you could even split a sandwich as I think they are quite big.

If you want a big snack the Writers Corner has huge cookies and other desserts. (Mouth watering over the thought of the carrot cake cookie :)) But one place we have never eaten - never even looked at - that I noticed on the menus was Min & Bills Dockside Diner. I think it's outdoor seating, but they have Frankfurter in a pretzel roll, and Italian Sausage with onions and peppers, and a chicken casear salad. Not a lot - but also not a typical hot dog, burger and chicken nuggets. The Backlot Express (where we usually wind up for CS and DHS) has (in addition to burger, dog & nuggets) a southwest salad and grilled turkey and cheese which doesn't sound too bad, and a vegetable sandwich that I (personally) think sounds horrible but may suit someone's taste. We haven't been to Pizza Planet in years, likewise witht he ABC commisary. The boys always want to eat at Primetime if we are at DHS.:confused3

Fairfax Fare has BBQ plates of chicken, ribs, brisket, or combo plates of the same with beans and cole slaw. It's not Flame Tree, but it's decent. Might be heavy before a buffet meal though. I've not tried the Italian sandwich at Catalina Eddie's but I hear it's good.

I'd agree with Starring Rolls, esp. for the yummy desserts! Backlot Express has a grilled turkey & cheese or a grilled veggie sandwich that we think are OK, especially if we split one to tide us over until dinner. They have hot dogs and burgers too.

I wouldn't take the time to trek out of the park and back again.

I didn't think that pizza planet was that bad.

Don't get me wrong, because I grew up in Chicago and believe the pizza I had there the best anywhere (I know not everyone will agree, but that's my opinion), plus I make my own pizzas and consider myself to be not too bad at it (I HAD to learn after leaving Chicago).

However, I had a one of those moments where you get really hungry and shakey so we grabbed me one of those pizzas and I was gradeful to have it. It reminded me of one of the "higher end" frozen pizzas, not the kind that go 5 for $10. :lmao: It was fine for a snack.

I had a very delicious taco salad at Fairfax Fare last trip...several ypes of lettuce, cheese, chili, tortilla strips, mont. jack cheese...yummy and pretty large...DH got the brisket meal with beans and slaw and it was great for $13.99 and kids got hotdogs from there. With free cups of ice water (we put crystal light packs in) it was dinner for four for $34.

Also had eaten lunch at Starring Rolls and had the big turkey/cheese sand with chips and drink. It was pretty good, but i thought too pricey at $9.19 before drink cost.

Min and Bill's is really really good. Here's a pic of my italian sausage meal, DELISH! :cool1:

lol I had one of those at around 1 am during an evening EMH a couple years ago and it tasted so good (mainly because it was 1 am and I was starving, exhausted and watching sparkly Disney lights). I am a New York City pizza girl, but I appreciate pizza in all its forms, even the almost-burnt Elio's I used to get in elementary school!

I would snack rather than leave the park. There are some delicious bakery items in Writer's Stop if all else fails!
The hot dog in the pretzel roll from Min and Bill's isn't terrible either. I also had a decent salad at the Backlot (whatever it is called now). They have Stoplight Margaritas at a kiosk right next to the Backlot, too.

We always get pizza and salad at Catalina Eddie's (close to TOT). Not great pizza but it's ok and it tides you over until dinner. DD6 also got chicken nuggets somewhere near there and they were good. No way would I leave the park for the sake of eating. That would probably wind up taking 2 hours out of your park time! I think you can find as decent CS fare at DHS as anywhere else. Maybe not as much variety, but again, something that will tide you over until dinner.

With your buffet dinner on the earlier side, why not use your CS on breakfast at your resort? Even if you go to have lunch at 11 by the time your done it is just over 5 hours until dinner. Maybe having breakfast at your hotel and then a late morning/early afternoon snack would help solve the problem of no CS at DHS being appealing to you.
