I am going to WDW this April with my sister and staying at my DVC for 3 days then at Pop Century for 3 more.
I was really looking forward to getting the meal plan this trip during our DVC stay because it is offered for us without having to buy a package.
Well my sister got her stomach stapled a few months ago and she said it won't be worth it for her because she hardly eats anything anymore.
I have been dieting for a week already with hopes of dropping a few lbs so I can pig out without guilt during our trip.
Wonder why I invited her? Peggie

Sounds like to me your sister is trying to make positive changes in her life ..

go .. have fun ..

I say tell her to go for it for Half the trip!
You can combo the dinners into the better shows and resturants and eat out really nice once, then use your counter services wisely! So instead of soda and dessert you get water and fresh fruit (save some for the later part of the trip)-- She still needs fuel and will work up an appetite running around the parks - AND you sweat buckets - so you really do need to replenish - what you spend in bottled water alone makes the meal plan SO WORTH IT!

I would do the entire trip - but she should at least see the value in the compromise.

When your stomach has been stapled it can be incredibly dangerous to over eat, so please ignore the posts that are encouraging this. :( Can you get the dining plan just for yourself at DVC, or does it have to be the entire party that gets it?

It might be worth it for character meals, dinner shows or signature dining.
Character meals are about the characters, not the food. Dinner shows like the HDDR are 2 credits each, again not about the food. California Grille is 2 credits. You could order a meal there and your sister could order a appetizer.

I would love to have extra TS credits!

I understand your disappointment in not having a partner in crime but there is a bigger issue. Supporting your sister in a loving and positive way as she tries to make some positive life changes. Why can't you tell her "Forget about the food fest WDW isn't just about eating. Come with me and we'll have a great time going on the rides and seeing the shows. And for this trip play down the food and eat the way she would be comfortable eating. Staying at DVC you can tailor eating to whats safe and healthy for your sister. Just a few thoughts from someone who's 5 sisters are her life buddies. :sunny:

According to my Travel Agent everyone in the room has to be on the same package or plan. If 1 gets the meal plan everyone staying there has to get it. :goodvibes

It might still be worth doing IF she feels comfortable with it. It is dangerous for her to eat a lot, but she could order what she wants and only eat part of it or you could share meals. The DP would also let you eat at the character meals, where you can choose how much you eat and the experience is most of what you're paying for anyway. However, if you really want to go this way, I'd offer to pay for the dining portion of her trip.

On the other hand, if she is really resistant - perhaps she feels like she's still working on changing her eating habits and would be too tempted to eat more than she can safely eat - then just wait for your next trip to do the DP. Being with your sister has to be more important than food on a single trip, right? I'd give a lot to have a sister I could have a good time traveling with instead of the sister I have who makes everything miserable.......

Good luck to her! I thought that I read there was a Dr's note that would allow Gastric Bypass patients to attend Character meals w/o paying the full price. Check on the dissabilities board. Or call Disney, don't they have a special service dept? Maybe you can go on the plan without her having to. It is worth a phone call to see.

No where in the posts above yours does it say to 'blow out them stapes!' - If the sister goes without food, well that is just as dangerous and if she just eats junk on the go, even if light - that is not good either.

Disney dining is NOT an all you can eat buffet at sizzler, full of empty carbs and cheap eats, and frozen desert stuff that they can't classify as any type of food.

I suggested they combo table services to eat more upscale - Not eat till the scale goes up. The finer restaurants serve very well balanced meals - in inviting atmospheres worth taking your time and enjoying. This is made affordable by the dining plan. The snack and counter services can be used on salads, and lite fare - and the fresh fruit is so refreshing in the parks... again, the bottled water is a big factor, and I am sure there will be $$$ spent keeping hydrated - this is important if you want to loose weight. So why not do it half the trip?

I personally know people that have had the band put on and they do not let that stop them from enjoying a good meal, it helps them with portion control.
I would be really interested in what they eat for 6 days without the dining plan. Will it be better or worse?

I hope you enjoy your trip no matter what. I loved the dinner shows, and my family ate better, not more, because of the dining plan. We have gone with and without and my concern was not the amount of food eaten for 7 days but the type of food that was eaten.

To the OP: If you decide not to get the dining plan, at least treat yourself to a nice dinner out --- Boma may be a good choice since its is a feast of the senses -> in my opinion.

I'm not seeing what your sister did wrong.

I think the OP was being a little facetious with the title of the thread. I'm sure she admires her sister as much as the rest of us for taking such a bold, but frightening step in taking her life to a happier place, hopefully.

OP: good luck to your sister! It has to take a lot of courage to do this. :thumbsup2

You can only get the Meal Plan anyway while you are staying in your DVC resort. Your sister made a positive stand in her life and you should support her! You could pay for her meal plan, and let her choose which restaurants to go to as a congrats on making her life better......go to allears.net and let her check out the menus there, I applaud her for taking the steps to make herself healthier. On the other hand, you can explain to her that it will be cheaper for her to go with the meal plan anyway if though she won't be eating much. The menu's are so varied, and I'm sure she'll find food she would like to eat at any of the restaurants. The TS restaurants, as other posters have said, have very well balanced meals (although lots of them can be very high in fat & calorie content), and but much better quality and less fat & calories than in the CS restaurants(of which most serve burgers, fries, fried chicken, fried fish), but some of the CS restaurants also have low caloric, low fat choices. $38 a day for 2 meals at Disney is a very big bargain...not to mention the one snack a day also (could be a bottle of water however)
Go and have a good time no matter what or where you are eating.....Disney's all about the magic anyway.....enjoy!

Well that's even better. Now you can pool her credits into yours and go to a bunch of signiture places. Pay for her an appetizer out of pocket and poof, she's full.

Even though they say that everyone in the party has to be on the meal plan, and that it has to be for entire lenght of stay, you may call and explain the medical issue and see if they will allow her to NOT purchase it even if you do. It's always worth a shot!

Either way, make sure to be supportive!
