Gibbs didn't wear a Marine uniform to the funeral because he is no longer in the Marines.

We have been watching every episode in order since the 2 pilot episodes from JAG. We started last January and we are almost to the end of season 7.

I also burst into tears when I realized that Gibbs has been making Mike's casket for many episodes now. It bothered me this season that I could not figure out what he had been making and made me SO sad when I finally realized it.

It was a great episode and leaves so many unanswered questions for next year.

I didn't think he was making it that long. That would mean Gibbs received that letter and knew he was dying before he showed last week.

As suspected, Mike was dying. I just bawled my eyes out at the funeral and then when I realized that Gibbs had built the casket, OMGoodness :sad1:

I had the same reaction when they showed the side of the casket and remembered that piece from earlier in the episode. Very fitting and it blew me away.

Gently disagree. Given the handmade quality of the casket and the apparent notion that the letter had been sitting in that particular place on the workbench as a reference, I do feel Gibbs had been crafting the casket for quite some time. I seem to recall that he was asked on more than one occasion what he was making without him ever giving a clear answer. Finally, such a realization adds more weight to the reply Gibbs makes when Vance says, "Mike was picking a fight." Gibbs: "Yeah, he was." ;)

I kind of thought that too, until you mentioned this. I haven't really paid that much attention to all of the episodes this season, so I might have missed something along the way.

I still have to wonder, though, how did they get it out of the house?

It's an optical illusion. He's not really in the basement they are really in the backyard just looks like the basement :p

Oooh. My grandfather would love to disagree with you. As he would say, "There is no such thing as a former Marine. Once a Marine. Always a Marine."

was franks in the force of any kind?

maybe because of how franks was gibbs didn't wear his to honour him?

though it would have been nice seeing gibbs in uniform ;)

Absolutely 100% true that once a Marine, always a Marine, in loyalty and honor etc. but as for why Gibbs wasn't wearing his Marine uniform to the funeral, my thought is that he didn't because he is no longer active duty Marines but he will likely be buried in his uniform when the time comes.

No, Gibbs is a Marine thru & thru. I really think he didn't wear his uniform because he knew Mike wasn't a formal kind of guy.

The Marines are a class all to themselves...or at least they think they are.
