We are heading to WDW 12/4-12/12 with a FD pin (last day to check in under the pin is 12/4)

We are planning on just one day Universal, that day is 12/5.

When I priced out tickets and the express pass it came out to about 540.00.

I then said "Self, what if you took ME to WDW, checked in and then grabbed an overnight bag and spent the night at Universal onsite?" That price is $660.00.

We have a HUGE (like I mean HUGE) Potter fan and the early entrance would be great, as would the unlimited express pass.

Where it makes me nuts is that we have TWO hotel rooms for one night.

Has anyone else done this? Have I lost my mind?

Opinions welcome.

Thanks

It sounds great to me! The only thing I'd do differently is get 2 day/2 park tickets instead of 1 day, since you will have 2 days' of free express pass use with your hotel stay. That gives you much more "value" to your stay, even if you do only half a day the second day and then return to Disney.

many do that.

have two different hotel rooms booked for the same day, so they can stay onsite for the hotel perks.

Thank you! It's nice to know I have not lost my marbles! :rolleyes1 (well not in this instance ;))

If you don't mind the cost I would stay at the Universal hotel that one night without question. The hotels are fabulous and you can't beat the convenience.

My friend put it this way, the cost is two dinners out, just don't eat out twice.

I'm going to book it. :goodvibes

Thanks all!

You're not crazy. We thought about doing the same thing when we go in August. We have a pin code for Pop Century and the rate couldn't be beat. Then we decided for various reasons to do Universal first, so we are going to spend two nights at Royal Pacific before heading to Disney. But it had more to do with our general travel plans than the thought of keeping the Pop room for that night or two.

We did it this past May. We already had a great deal booked for a one bedroom villa at Bonnet Creek for ten nights through a third party. We then decided to spend two nights onsite at Universal. Due to cancelation policies we couldn't change the ten night stay at BC, so just had both the BC villa and the room at RPR at Universal booked for the same two nights. Since we had a rental car and was going to have the villa booked for the full ten nights, we decided to go over to Universal midweek for two nights for both the lower crowds and the cheaper weeknight rates (rather than going over there at the very beginning or at the end of the trip).

We are going to do the same thing for our Dec trip and I am thinking about doing one night over there during my solo Sept trip too, even though I have a villa already booked for both trips over at Bonnet Creek. The villa would just sit empty those nights.

We did this a couple of years ago, in the middle of our 14nights at AKL, and the Express pass is well worth it, especially in peak season. We stayed one night, meaning that we got the passes for the day we arrived and the day we left, and the early WWoHP access is good, and we hardly queued once with the Express. We will now only got to Universal if we stay onsite!!
We stay at Loew's Royal Pacific if anyone is curious :)

Since this thread is about staying onsite, I'm going to move it to the Resorts board.

People do it all the time.
Some just book the room for the perks and don't even sleep in the room.

I booked yesterday. It just makes sense. Thank you all!

I am getting excited!

What you are doing is exactly what we did for our January 2012 trip. We had a one bedroom suite on I-Drive booked for the SW/DC portion of our trip. We looked at purchasing Express Passes for our Universal days, and it was cheaper to book a basic queen/queen room at RPR for one night (which comes with free Express Passes) than to purchase two days of Express for our family of three.

We knew we wouldn't stay at RPR (we needed the separate sleeping quarters in our suite), but hey, a savings is a savings!

Then, to make the whole deal even sweeter, when we went to check in and get our room keys for the EP, the desk clerk informed us that they were overbooked for our room type. She offered to "upgrade" us to the hospitality suite (which does not have a standard bed....just a pull out sofa.....but has a huge living area and full kitchen) and provide us with a roll away for our DS, then refund our credit card an additional $100 for the inconvenience. Since we weren't planning on staying there anyway, we jumped at the refund and were thrilled! I think our original room rate with the AAA/CAA discount was $189 per night. So we ended up paying about $90 for two days of Express for three people. Awesome.

For the record, the room was beautiful and would have totally worked even if we needed to sleep there.

That is awesome!! What is pixie dust called at Universal? Muggle Mist? Gryffindor Glitter?

mummy dust is what some homies call it.

some of us, ahem, are not parry hotter peeps.

We are doing exactly the same thing. We are having 15 nights at Disney as we have DVC and we need a 2 bedroom villa with 2 teens and a tween but I was going to b fron of line passes as we ca only go in summer and we o ly go once every three years. I was going. To buy three day passes but two nights at HRH was cheaper. We won't stay there as we have a 2 treehouse villa but will chill I the afternoon and maybe swim. So you are not mad.
