The Monte Cristo....

The short version: Does the Monte Cristo have jam on it?

The long version: The Unofficial Guide says don't take kids to Blue Bayou because the wait staff there is testy. I went and looked at the menu and, admittedly, they don't have anything that would appeal to my older son.

He'd have to carry in chicken nuggets/fingers from a counter service place, but we found out last year that doing that isn't a problem at Disney.

So, here's my question: We are not big eaters when we're traveling. I was looking at the menu and saw what looks like a yummy sandwich...but then I saw the name. I had a Monte Cristo once, thinking it was going to be savory. As it turned out, it was like french toast with jam and a grilled ham and cheese sandwich hidden in the middle.

Has anyone had this sandwich recently? Is it sweet or savory?

I have never had the wait staff at BB be "testy" I really like BB I think its a great place to go!

Also so you know BB also has a kid's menu, so you should be able to find something your son would like on that. Since most of the kid's menus are the same around the park.

I have not eaten a Monte Cristo myself, but my sister gets them all the time at BB. They are a ham and cheese sandwhich, battered and fried, with a dash of powdered sugar on top. At BB the jam is served on the side for dipping not already in the sandwhich.

I have heard it is savory with a dash of sweet.

That was quick! I bet if I asked them to hold the powdered sugar, they would. I'm glad to hear that others have had a good experience there.

My kiddos saw it last time when we were riding Pirates and I promised we'd eat there on our next visit!

We've had good waiters there, too. The food, on the other hand, aside from the wedge salad (which we have without the sausage), is "meh". Then again, it's hard to pay $25 for portobello mushrooms and couscous anyway, so the cost definitely gets in the way for us.


However, if there's nothing on the kid's menu that would interest him, you could feed him beforehand and just order dessert for him.

Warning on the MC! My brother, who runs daily and is a marathoner and CAN eat like a horse, could not even finish that sandwich. he didn't fill up with salad or anything, as green veggies are disliked by him. He had half and ate some of the meat out of the other half, but he absolutely couldn't finish it. Might consider a split plate with someone else at the table, since you're not big eaters to begin with.

The MC is huge and soooooooo good!!! It's exactly as described by fairycat, savory and a little sweet. And huge, if you aren't big eaters try sharing.

And the wait staff has never been "testy" with us and we have our kids most of the time. In fact, in the past (almost) 2 years we've only eaten there twice without the girls and the service was just as good both times. I'm a big BB fan, I love the food and the atmosphere. Take the kids, you all love it!

The Blue Bayou is a great place to eat if you like atmosphere. It is truly unique and it is a great experience.

My DH ADORES the Monte Cristo. We have eaten at the BB JUST for the Monte Cristo in the past. LOL Things have changed a bit in recent years and the Monte Cristo is no longer on the dinner menu at the BB, only on the lunch menu.

However, Cafe Orleans has the Monte Cristo on their menu as well, so you can get it there, too. They also have a 2nd MC on their menu, the 3-cheese monte cristo.

Drooling yet? hehe

While I have never had testy service at the BB, I have had it the one time I went to cafe orleans for the monte cristo. And our jam came on the side

It's more like fried dough to me than french toast. It is quite filling, but I do not recommend it if you have a light stomach. Mine couldn't handle the grease at all :/

Another option would be to just go for dessert. That is what we do. It is very expensive to have lunch so having just dessert is a good compromise.

We love the Flying Dutchman! It is wonderful (warm chocolate chip brownie with vanilla ice cream, caramel and chocolate sauce) and is easily shared for 2 people. They also have creme brule and key lime pie which are both yummy too.

That way you get to enjoy the atmosphere and have a wonderful treat too!

Just an idea.

Ive never had a problem with the waitstaff at BB. When I was there recently I took my 11 year old and my 6 year old and they both ordered off of the kids menu I got them the cute drinks that came with the flashy pin things and we ordered dessert. I kinda of didnt want to take the kids when I had originally planned on going but definately was glad I did, once I saw how much they enjoyed it. As for the MC Sand. I had it a few years ago and it was just too much fried food for my tummy, and I usually have a steel stomach, If I were to ever have it again, I would def split it!

Never had an issue with the wait staff. My 19yo son is a football linebacker and had no problem with the MC and then he ate part of my DGF's prime rib(when they served that.) I find it to greasey for me, but many folks love it.

DBF can eat a whole MC by himself too. He's done it a couple times. Last time we both shared one from Cafe Orleans. Just 2 pieces of that thing gets me stuffed. But I think it's super good. Even with the powdered sugar doesn't make it sweet to me, the jam they serve it with does.

The MC is definitely one of those one-every-few-day splurges when you eat nothing but fruit off the carts during the day, and fill it up at CO!

DH loves the MC at DL. I just asked him if he thought it tasted like french toast with ham in it and he said no, not the ones at DLR. He said that he got one at a little restaurant here in our town and it was literally french toast for the bread so maybe the one you had before was made like that. The ones at DLR (and the one at the Mission Inn in Riverside, btw) are dipped in batter and then fried as opposed to making french toast for the bread and then putting some ham in the middle.

We took my 3 year old and 2 year old in October for lunch at BB and the staff was great! I think I was more "testy" about the kids acting ok and not bothering those around us ! I had the sandwich and it was great! We also took the kids to cafe orleans in december and it was a bit more relaxed for me with kiddos . If I remember correctly..the kids menus at both places were the same items: mac n cheese, chicken and spagetti, and one other item (can't recall) and fruit with all..price may have been a bit higher at BB than Cafe orleans.We were able to share a plate for the kids at cafe orleans. Both great places to eat, but the BB atmosphere is something that needs to be experienced at least once! SO FUN!

You are right Pixie...it is a chocolate chip blondie....chocolate chip cookie in the shape of a brownie.

We had no issue with the wait staff when we went with our one year old and 3 1/2 year old. My 3 1/2 year old LOVED the mac and cheese they had. And the pirate cookie boat.

You can get the MC at Cafe Orleans, so if you would rather do dinner at the BB or get something else, you can do that as well. It is VERY filling. But sooooooooooo good. I much prefered the regular one with ham to the three cheese one myself.

We paid a visit to the BB on most our trips in 2008. I suggest going there once, just to say you've been there, but it isn't what it is knocked up to be.

They are generally unfavorable. Of the 8 or so times we visited in 2008, about 6 of the times we encountered a fairly poor waitstaff. On one occasion, we had to request a different waiter.

This place is 90% atmosphere, 8% food, and 2% service. As long as you go into the place with these expectations, you'll be fine.

I always wonder at this....I mean we aren't super picky about our service but we do expect good service. We have NEVER received bad waitstaff at BB. It just boggles my mind that so many people do......it makes me wonder if others expectations are higher than mine....but I really don't think so because I can be a major PITA if I'm getting bad service.
