... and we have decided NOT to get a new one! Holy moly....

Is anyone else's household microwave-free? With all of the talk about microwaves causing cancer, depleting nutritional value of food, and just being overall not good for our health, we have decided that not replacing our microwave will be difficult at first from a convenience factor, but in the long run will be better.

Now this is not to say that we won't occasionally use a microwave somewhere else- friends houses, work, DVC hotel rooms, etc.... but for our everyday goings on, we'll be sticking to the toaster oven, regular oven, and stove.

Anyone microwave-free that can offer some advice on the transition? I better wash out my tea kettle!!

Geez. I'd do without our stove before I would get rid of our microwave! Def use it more than the oven.

We actually have 2 microwaves and could not imagine life without either! I've read many articles on them and nothing has convinced me they are not safe to use or make my food less healthy.

Good Luck with that. Won't be happening in our house.

My microwave broke two weeks ago and I have been too busy to go pick out a new one. The only thing that was a bit of a transition is the number of dirty pots. I use my microwave mostly for reheating leftovers and heating up cans of veggies/soups/spaghetti O's etc. I do put my pots in the dishwasher but I only have one small pot and one small skillet which seem to be the perfect size for these activities. I find myself washing those to pots by hand a lot. My toaster oven has been getting a workout.

We tried to do it and caved. It's the little things like popcorn, baked potatoes hot chocolate- all the things that we missed being able to do quickly.

The biggest inconveniences I faced when my microwave died was that I had to steam my vegetables on the stove and reheating my coffee was impossible.

We bought a new microwave as soon as we found one we liked. I wouldn't want to go without one and I don't buy into the claims that they are bad for our health or somehow make our food less nutrition than if it was prepared on the stovetop.

We use our microwave everyday. Also our toaster oven. THose are two things I'd never be without.

I have been microwave-free @ home for 18 months now. Just never bought one when I moved into my new apartment. I find that I eat healthier foods, and I actually cook again. The occasional TV Dinners/Pot Pies that I cook in the oven really seem to taste better than when I have microwaved them in the past.

Us!! Last month. I'll break down eventually and get one but so far we're alright. I would've loved to nuke my raspberry coffee cake for a few seconds yesterday....

My over-the-stove microwave went out a few weeks before Thanksgiving. After a couple of days, I went to KMart and bought a cheap little one to sit on the counter until we could get ours replaced. Being without it for a few days was tough. Using a little, low power cheap microwave was also tough. But I did it for a month. I was never so glad to get the new one installed. Not a chance that I could ever do without!

I can't imagine being without my microwave it's just so convenient.

In fact when we lived in CT we had a nice one that sat on our counter - now it lives in the garage "just in case" our over the stove one dies. Sounds strange I know but we have already loaned it out to my parents when their built in one died suddenly.

I have to admire anyone who goes microwave-free but I admit I don't envy you.

I use my microwave multiple times per day: to re-heat leftovers, to warm up my coffee, to steam veggies and to defrost frozen meat. I guess I could do all of that some other way, but it's so much easier in the nuke machine.

OP here-- You all crack me up!! :rotfl:

I still have a micro at work, as does DH. We normally bring leftovers for lunch, rather than eating leftovers for the next night's dinner, so I think we'll be ok. In the morning we have cold cereal or eggs, so no micro needed there. We don't drink coffee, so I don't have to worry about having to re-heat that... but I am a tea drinker, so I have to be proactive about putting the kettle on in the morning.

LOVE my toaster oven, and we actually use it more than the micro. We don't get a whole lot of frozen meals because of the various food allergies we have (The ONLY two frozen meals we can actually eat are Amy's Rice Mac and Cheese and Amy's Rice Noodle Lasagna). I do so much cooking at home for us anyway that I really don't think I'm going to miss it.

Anyone want a broken microwave before I put it out on the lawn on Sunday?? :goodvibes

We haven't ditched ours but I doubt we'll replace it when it eventually dies. We just don't use it much at all, maybe once or twice a month, and I don't like having it on the counter. We talked about getting an over the stove one but realized that wouldn't get used at all, because DD10 is pretty much the only one who uses the microwave because she's just getting used to the gas stove (we had electric until last July, and the open flame on the gas intimidates her a bit) and she's too short to use a built-in.

When our microwave died, I did not replace it for a couple of months. It was hard at the beginning, but pretty soon, I hardly missed it. When we did replace it, though, it was just sooooo nice.

I would definitely replace it. It is not vital in my kitchen, but it is a nice convenience to have.
