The Med Thread - All Sailings - Mediterranean

In today's New York Times magazine supplement, "Summer Travel," there is an article about six Mediterrean islands that fly "under the radar" and are great to go to without a lot of crowds -- Sardinia was one of the six!

Thanks Julie. I'll check it out.

Unfortunately, the Raleigh News & Observer did not carry that supplement. However, the Travel Section in today's paper did have little articles about "less touristy cities" and Naples was one of them. :)

I highly recommend spending the $14.95 and purchasing an Amex Traverlers Cheque Card. Many local banks sell them and they are good for 3 years. I have been using this in all my international travels. You can just get your cash when you need it instead of carrying around the actual checks. In Spain and Italy, the card is recommended as first choice to use by Amex.

They do count as purchase transactions if you load them with your Amex Card, therefore earning rewards. You can only get $400 per day, so you may need multiple cards. There is a $5 reload fee, so I recommend loading them in large increments. The max card load is $2750 in 14 days.

Don't hold me to it, as the next CM I speak to could give me a different answer. Here are the prices I was quoted for Wireless Internet access on the MED cruises.

100 minutes - $55
250 minutes - $100
500 minutes - $150

Plus there is a .40 cent charge for every minute over your limit.

The CM I spoke to said the rooms don't have wireless Internet access, only wireless phone access?? The MED Transatlantic live report seems to say differently.

Anyway .. just thought I would pass this info on!

Aloha,:thumbsup2
Just call DCL talked to an agent(1600 PDT) . She said that all staterooms are wired and the price that was posted was correct.
100 mins -$55.00
250 mins -$100.00
500 mins -$150.00
Hope that helps.

Hi all. We just returned from our incredible journey across the Atlantic - What an awesome trip we had!
FYI: Air France (I don't know about other airlines) is no longer gate checking strollers. It must be checked with your luggage. This made for a very difficult journey through the BCN and CDG airports for our 3 year old (and me!). I did not see any strollers in either airport, so other airlines in Europe may be be doing the same thing. Once we reclaimed our luggage in the US for customs, I also reclaimed the stroller! The rest of the luggage got checked back through to our final destination, but the stroller stayed with us and the gate agent in Houston was more than happy to gate check it for us.

Wow thanks for the info! We are flying Air France & easyjet!

Forgive me if this was covered before...

We are sailing on the 07/07/2007 cruise and I was just filling out the forms on DisneyCruise.com. (BTW they do not seem at all prepared for the Med cruises in their forms. You can only choose US airports to fly to or from even though you may be arriving from London or Paris, etc.)

I have been debating about buying Travel Insurance to cover any unexpected medical expenses during the trip. God forbid that one of us gets seriously hurt and then needs to be flown off the ship to a hospital. :headache:

"Excuse me sir, your wife will be fine now. By the way, here is your $20,000 bill for the helicopter medical evacuation and treatment."

STEP 1 - Call your insurance company and find out what your coverages are if you are out of the country.

My policy does provide coverage while outside the USA. If the injury is minor (i.e. no hospitalization) , my carrier simply requires an itemized bill for minor services. I am responsible to pay up front, and then file the claim when I return to the USA.

If the injury is more serious, then there is a phone number for "Overseas Medical Assistance". They will coordinate all of the care and payment.

What about transport? :scared: There's still that helicopter ride.

In my case, if the injury cannot be treated wherever I am, even on a cruise ship, then all transport including helicopter or other aircraft is covered.

I am glad that I called to check my coverage before shelling out money for insurance that I didn't need.

HOWEVER, the opposite might be true. You DON'T want to get caught thinking that you have coverage only to find out that you don't. :scared1:

Know for sure what is and is not covered to determine if you need this insurance. Then you can buy just what you need, if anything.

Happy Cruising!

Thank you Epcot_VA for the info and advice. We did purchase a package policy for our B2Bs in August. Question though: I thought travel insurance had to be purchased before final payment? Have I been wrong all along in thinking this? Anyone know for sure? :confused3

Nope I purchased insurance up to a few days before travel.

Many policies do have a pre-existing condition policy where you may have to purchase so many days within the 1st payment of the cruise. So if you purchased the policy after the 1st payment day limit then, all pre-existing conditions would not be covered.

Good Luck..

Check with the policy .. I purchased private insurance a few days before final payment. DCL and CAA would not let me buy insurance, so I went to private. When I purchased it I asked them about pre-existing condition and they said that they will cover them, as long as there hasn't been an occurrence within so many months of purchasing insurance (can't remember exact number). For example, I had a blood clot and phlebitis over 5 years ago, so I will be covered if I get another blood clot, as the occurrence could not have been predicted. I made sure to spell this one out to the agent to make sure I was covered. Hope this helps.

If the hotel has a safe, I don't understand the need for even a hotel to hold anyone's passport. I haven't traveled overseas in years but I've never given it up in the past.

Marie

I just got back from Rome a week ago and that hotel reviewed my passport but did not hold it. In some countries however, the passport has been held for the duration of the stay. These tended to be eastern European countries.

Hey Guys

I am posting this if anyone is interested in a private tour of the Amalfi Coast.

I have worked with this company to provide a custom tour to my specifications!

I just received an E-mail to confirm for June 30th and he still has guides & vehicles available.

My tour is not scheduled untill June 30th so I cannot speak from experience however I am looking forward to it.

information.

I was enjoying the live trip reports from the repo and the first Med cruise. Has anyone found any live trip reports from the 2nd Med cruise (June 6 or so?)

Just got our cruise docs, but no DVD. I thought I saw previous posts that mentioned a DVD?:confused3
