The Med Thread - All Sailings - Mediterranean

Trains are a great way to see the county. I did a two month Eurail trip after college. You might want to see what the price of a Eurail pass would be for the time you want. If I recall, the first class pass gets you on some public transportation also. Actually in Spain, I would recommend a first class ticket anyway because there are a lot of Gypsy's in Spain and they were in the coach/second class sections. :surfweb:

Subscribing and question for all.

We are doing the June 27th 10 day Med cruise. We are planning on arriving on the 26th and getting a room for the night. There are 5 of us, which seems to be a problem when booking a room, even if booking 2 rooms.

When I put in 5 people for 2 rooms, it tells me I'm over the guest limit. I'm thinking to just booking 2 rooms w/ 2 people in each room and hide the one kid.

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions.

TIA
Nina

I don't have answers, but wanted to say 'welcome' and to tell you that several of us on here are on the June 27th as well. There's also a fairly active thread on DISBoards for the specific cruise.

See you in Barcelona!

Thanks Big. I know the thread, posted a couple of times in the beginning, but haven't had much time lately. Have just gotten into hyper planning stage this weekend. So much to research and get booked!!! :surfweb:

I found it difficult to find a room for four people out of hundreds of hotels it gave me two, but I do think many Spainish hotels do not release there dates and prices for Summer 2007 until later this year, maybe at the end of this month, from the links I posted earlier try to E.mail some, I found them helpful, i will try to add a link for the one which helped me.

As others have posted, the Hispanos Siete Suiza is an all-suite hotel, and I am booked there for two nights before our 8/8/07 cruise. I've had my reservation for over a month, so I know they are taking reservations for next summer. We will be 4 people in a two bedroom suite. The hotel is near La Sagrada Familia.

How can you tell if the hotel is close to the port? I found some nice apartment/hotels like this one, but it doesn't mention how close it is to the port.

Also, we choose Disney transfers can we stay at any hotel we want or are we limited to certain hotels?

Bellelinus, thanks for the name of that hotel. Off to ck that one out, too!

My head is starting to hurt.

We visit Europe twice a year. Checking in a hotel is not the same as in the U.S. You are required to give your passports. And they are strict about room occupancy, since many countries collect a bed tax based on the number of people.

Agree. Don't try it. Once we had a double reserved while traveling with our six year old. Checking into that Paris hotel late at night, we were required to take and pay for a second room because of fire codes.

Many hotels have "family rooms" with 3 or 4 beds - but you have to inquire and book early. Sometimes American chain hotels will let you have the third and fourth person, usually at a fee. Seldom is a child free in a European hotel.

Most hotels and booking sites have Maps and show the locaton of the Hotel and you can zoom in and out to check where it its.

For central locations anything around La Rambla, Gothic, (Gotic) Eixample areas are good, For food and drink remember La Rambla is a tourist trap, and prices geared up for the tourist only and best to eat just off it.

Barcelona Metro and FGC trains are very good and you can ghet a train oon FGC from the Airport to central Barcelona at 'Passeig de gracia' in Eixample area.

Thanks to everyone for all the info and links. I can't believe how difficult it is to find something for the five of us. Which kid should I leave behind? :lmao:

I guess Europeans don't have more than 2 kids!!!

Back to my research.

Andrew, the three areas you mentioned, are they fairly close to the port? And is the port just known as the 'Port of Barcelona'?

Yes As I see it it is the Port of Barcelona or Port Veli the world trade center is in one island/pier.

Bascaly directly up from the port, are:-
To the right facing north LA Ribera
Directly North La Rambla, Gotic and then Eixample,
To the left facing north El Raval this faces the Olmpic hill.
If you are in any of these areas you are close to the port and also well connected in the city my metro and close to attractions.

La Rambla is usually the first thing anyone knows about Barcelona so its a tourist trap, and the same as Oxford street in ways in London, everyone heads for it, and therefore people wanting to take your money in different ways head there as well.

There are good public transport connections on Metro and Buses and overhead trains and also good taxis, so you can go anywhere!

Eixample has the big shops and is centrally located, I prefer that.

I found this great website for airlines within Europe; Aireuropa com

I found a roundtrip flight from Madrid to Barcelona for 4 people for $264.

I was originally thinking about taking the train from Madrid, now I think we might fly!

Just found this link a while ago. It may take days to read it all. I'm looking at Swiss Air from Chicago to Zurich on to Barcelona. With tax it's 1050, rt. I guess I'll book one of the hotels Disney is suggestingn for Barcelona. It would be nice if we can get a few hour lay over in Zurich, since we haven't been there in about 25 years. But we won't have time to do any places on the way back. I also saw that Air France had a fairly reasonable fare through Paris. Has anyone else looked into Swiss Air? (I'm not sure that's their name anymore. I think it changed to just Swiss, or something like that.)
