Hi Sarah! I see your DH visited last night!![]()
mom2taylorandemily said:Disneyrsh, we have a heat pump. So how does none of what you say matter if it is a heat pump. This is an area that I have no idea what I am talking about. My DH handled all of that stuff, I just wrote the check. I think I had the worse job. I hate handing out all that money if I don't have too.
Disneyrsh said:I can help you with this! If you went up in size but are not getting the cooling you expected, the problem may be that your ducts are not sized for the larger ac unit. Did your guy count all your ducts and measure the dimensions of your room? This will give you an accurate picture of what tonnage you want your ac to be.
Plus, and here's another problem, if your furnace is a 4 ton unit, and they put in a 5 ton ac, the ac can run maximally at 4 tons only. So you paid for 5 tons but your ducts and your furnace (which is a separate unit from the ac unless you have a heat pump) are only rated for 4 tons.
If you have the reverse, a larger furnace but a smaller ac, that's ok, because the blower unit on the furnace is what powers the ac. You just can't go in the opposite direction. If you have a heat pump this does not apply.
I would call your ac guys back, if you know the tonnage of your ac is larger than the tonnage of your furnace, they messed up and need to fix it. Also, if it's still under warranty you should be able to get them out there to do what's called a Manual J house measurement for accurate sizing of your ac.
If it's not the right size you'll pay more in energy bills, and potentially have trouble with mold/mildew in the ducts.
Hope this helps!
Disneyrsh said:If you have a heat pump then your only concern is if your ducts are sized properly to handle the larger volume of air that the a/c can now pump out.
I don't think you have to worry about mold/mildew in this case because it's not a furnace/ac mismatch issue, which is good.
If your ducts aren't big enough than you won't see the increased cooling that the larger unit will give you, but your power bills will reflect the cost to run the larger unit.
It's not a huge deal, though. If you do feel like you're not getting the house cool enough I'd call the guys out and have them check how many returns and registers you have.
You might be able to bully them into putting in a few to maximize the efficiency of the larger unit if you don't have enough. That's what the Manual J is for-it tell the a/c guys how many registers and returns for a certain sized room that a certain sized ac will be maximally efficient at.
Yah, now I know all this stuff and I've forgotten how to sew....
It's the Kelly Bundy 4 Touchdowns In High School episode, all over again...(how's that for obscure references!)

I have a hard time falling asleep, especially when we actually go to bed at the same time. If I have to work in the morning, I'll go out on the couch. For some reason I fall asleep REALLY fast on the couch (probably because it's more comfy than my bed). When I wake up (usually a couple of hours later) I'll go get in bed.
This annoys DH to no end, but I just want to sleep!![]()

I need my own show.
I need to add that a heat pump is basically an air conditioner that runs in reverse in the wintertime. In the summer, it pulls heat out of the house to cool it. In the winter time, it pulls heat into the house to heat it.
Most popular in milder southern states.
My theory was I wouldn't walk into a car dealership and ask the sales guy which car he thinks I should buy, and with this a/c costing so much, it's along the same lines for me.
I squeeze a nickle 'til the buffalo howls. It's how we afford the trips to disney on one paycheck. Well, two, but my writing paychecks are ttteeeeeeeeennnnny.![]()
