Texas pastor electrocuted during baptism
Accident occurred when 33-year-old reached for a microphone

WACO, Texas - A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning after adjusting a nearby microphone while standing in water, a church employee said.

The Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was stepping into the baptistery as he reached out for the microphone, which produced an electric shock, said University Baptist Church community pastor Ben Dudley.

Water in a baptistery usually reaches above the waist, said Byron Weathersbee, interim university chaplain at Baylor University.

Lake was pronounced dead at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, nursing supervisor Pat Mahl said. The woman being baptized apparently had not stepped into the water and was not seriously injured.

Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, said Jamie Dudley, the wife of Ben Dudley and a business administrator at the church.

“He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear,” she said. “It’s the only way you can be loud enough.”

About 800 people attended the morning service, which was larger than normal because it was homecoming weekend at nearby Baylor University, Dudley said.

Lake had been at the church for nine years, the last seven as pastor. He had a wife, Jennifer, a 5-year-old daughter and two 3-year-old sons.

At a remembrance attended by about 1,000 people Sunday night at First Baptist Church, Ben Dudley told the UBC congregation that they would move forward as a church.

“I don’t know how, when, why, where or what’s going to happen, but we will continue as a church in the community because that is what Kyle would have wanted,” he said.

So unbelievably tragic. Heard this on the news this morning.

I don't think it was the Lord's doing. :confused3 Very sad. It sounds like he left a young family and a congregation who loved him as well.

I hadn't heard about this. Such a young husband and father :sad2:. That is so sad, and it's such a horrible tragedy for the whole congregation to witness :(.

We all laugh when we read the ridiculous warning labels on our blow dryers, warning us not to use them in the bath tub. But somehow, he thought it was okay to use the mike in the baptistry? Let all Baptists beware! I wonder how many other paostors do this.

That's awful and sad. His poor children..

I read this on MSN last night.

Can you imagine the children who viewed this? :guilty: Over 800 people were in attendance at that service. And to have to see the Preacher die before their eyes..... :guilty:

Oh gosh! That’s awful! I can’t imagine the poor congregation seeing something like this. And I feel so badly for his family and friends as well. :(

I have a lot of friends affected... matter of fact, one was the person giving chest compressions yesterday morning. Very sad freak accident.

Funeral is tomorrow morning, viewing is tonight.

How terrible! I have seen many pastors use a mike in the baptistry and it never occured to me they might be electrocuted. :guilty:

Whatever happened to spashing a little water on the forehead? Much safer than going swimming in it.

How horrible. My DH is about that age, with 3- and 5-year-old kids as well. I can hardly imagine us being able to go on without him. I'll be thinking of the widow and her little children.

Baptists don't sprinkle -they dunk. Thats how I think all Baptists do it. At least it was that way when I was growing up. They don't Baptize infants -they baptize children or adults who have made a decision.

Tragic. I know our pastors uses a mic but it is a battery operated one that is hooked where it can't get wet. I have had the honor of interpreting several of the baptisms for deaf members and have seen the tech guys wire him up before baptism. Maybe they need to switch to boom mics.
As to sprinkling. Baptist don't sprinkle we dunk in the same manner as written in the Bible when John the Baptist baptized Christ.

LOL...do they sit on a little seat above a tank of holy water and does the congregation get to throw balls at a target to dump them in the tank?

How sad. I was baptized in the Baptist church as a teen (have since converted to Catholicism). How horrible to have such a special ceremony turn so tragic. :sad2:

I read the article on CNN this morning and I was wondering if he had a wireless mike on or what, they sure didn't explain it to well.

How tragic. I guess this tragedy will prompt a review of Baptist technique for Baptism. I feel for his poor family.

I was grateful that the person about to be baptized hadn't entered the water yet. Geesh, what a tragedy.
