THE LIBERAL THREAD #3- No Debate Please

My dad was in one of those body bags. How dare that certain lurkers pass judgment on how some of us paid for our college tuition. At the time my dad died, my mother was a stay-at-home mom raising three children. She was able to get a job working for the post office graveyard shift and went to school during the day so she could have a career. We would not have survived had we not had those additional VA and SS benefits. The VA benefits were promised to us (kids) if we went to college. Then along came Reagan and -- poof! Bye-bye! (right as I was graduating from HS)

BTW, there was never any doubt that I wouldn't work while going to college. The benefits were going to go towards tuition and books, and would have given me a greater opportunity to attend a better school.

No one knows when life is going to leave you with a bowl of lemons. We took those lemons and made them into lemonade. It would have been nice though if the government had made good on it's promises to the families of war veterans. That's one huge reason while I could never be a conservative! I just don't agree with their philosophy of me, myself, and I. Never have and never will.

You know, unlike most "flag waivers" I know who slap those yellow ribbon stickers on their big SUVs and talk about being patriotic while never having done anything for their country other than sit behind a big old desk and talk about "supporting the troops" , I paid for my college by joining the army. Don't let people bother you. You know where you stand.

For me, I think I am also a liberal by temperment, for lack of a better word. I know there are people who think that liberals lack common sense (which always seems to be a favorite comeback of those who haven't been afforded the opportunity to get an education) or are naive, but I'm proud to say that despite what I've seen, despite the things I have personally experienced, I still have faith that most people are decent. I'm glad that the years haven't made me bitter.

I'm not saying that all conservatives are bitter and that all liberals are good. I know plenty of decent conservatives and I know a number of liberals who are, in fact, naive or who come off as smug idiots. But in general, I think what really makes up a liberal is faith in the goodness of people and a belief that things can, and will, get better if we just work at it.

Wow - thank you and your family for your sacrifice for our country, albeit in an unexplainable war........

From what I read, the conservatives seem to not want to have any government assistance (education, welfare, health care) at all. We democrats believe in our government and that it should help its fellow citizens.

So - you and I - we're getting government assistance - not a bail out - but assistance - and Mr. Reagan comes and takes it away, and makes my life and my parents life harder than it should be. Should I rush right out and join his "team" - because he's oh so right? Or do I evaluate my principles, and join a party that wants to offer programs to people like me?

That - and they're pro-choice? Sounds like an easy decision for me......

I'm a liberal because of Allen and Georgia, my parents. They lived through the depression and were Roosevelt Democrats. They understood the innate value of every human life and taught me to do unto others - always. They were farm union organizers in the 50s and very early 60s. I grew up knowing that I was no better or worse than any other human being but that I had an obligation to help others. I grew up listening to Leadbelly and the Weavers, how could I be anything other than a lib? ;)

I'm sorry for posting on your thread, but I was just wondering, does this go for the unborn children who were aborted also, or are their lives not valuable?

Well, it's settled everyone: I'm taking my little terrorist to Disney World for his birthday. Do you think it will be hard for him to get a driver's license? He'll need to show proof of his DOB.

I need to get ADRs for Cinderella's Royal Table and I might surprise him with one of those behind the scenes tours.

Oh, I'm just so excited!

Theresa, you're more than welcome to post here however, you'll note that the thread says "no debate please" so I'm just going to refrain from having this discussion. Of course, you can always start a thread elsewhere; you're bound to get lots of replies, as it is a hot button topic around here.

Great decision for a birthday!! Yes, he'll get in free, but will need an I.D. How about his birth certificate? Make sure it's the L-O-N-G form, otherwise it might be deemed a fake! ;)

Hey libs, AP just announced that the NY governor's office has said that Caroline Kennedy will be his pick to replace Hillary.

I haven't really followed this too closely, but I think this will be an interesting choice.

Good for her.

Got it. Now I just have to decide if we should do a special event. Do you think he'd like dressing up for the Pirates and Princess party?

I'm sorry you lost your father when you were so young. My dad was in VN and spent 30 years in the military; he and my mom and pretty much everyone we knew were against the war.

I'm sorry about your dad. My dad was still with us, working three jobs to raise his six children. We were all expected to work our way through school, and we did, but as the youngest I was most affected by the trickle down fiasco. My husband has always been mildly amused by my animosity toward Reagan (DH's parents paid his way through college, lucky boy). I was really glad to see that I wasn't the only one affected by Reaganomics. Those years will always stay with me, and will always affect how I feel toward others.

Unrelated, but I'm having an ethical problem:

The twins are taking a massive nap. Do I wake them up now or let them continue to sleep and let the Hubs, who does betime, deal with the scary repurcussions later when he comes home?

I think I might just be letting them sleep . . . . .

Thanks! I'm glad you still have your dad. He sounds like an upstanding person. I don't have any memories of my dad (just photographs). I was too young when he died. When I was younger, I didn't realize how hard it must have been on my mom. She was always great for us kids, though. There were always lots of hugs and kisses to go around. My mom worked nights and went to school during the day (and worked days, as well for several years). She used to do library runs for us kids once a week during her lunch breaks. When she'd pick us up from school, there would be several library books in the car. She'd carefully picked out books for each of us, knowing what we'd like to read or have read to us. I think back on her unselfishness now and am thankful for each day that I have her in my life.

For sure! Terrorists make great pirates!

I hear ya! It was a tough time historically.

I remember those quandries! It's heaven to have some extra time to yourself, yet then they don't want to go to bed at bedtime. I say let them sleep a bit longer -- maybe another 30 min.

A friend's sister has twins. She has 5 kids altogether. We went to their house to see everyone over the holidays and the twins' nickname were the "terror twins." My friend (their uncle) called them little terrorists and then told me why. I guess we're not the only ones who have terrorists!

Oh speaking of terrorists, has anyone seen Jeff Dunham live? I love his skits with Achmed, The Dead Terrorist. He's coming here in a couple of weeks and I'd love to go. I'm not sure about forking over the money. I'd want to see him up close to catch all of the facial expressions, KWIM?

My friend at the Pentagon sent me some links. Very funny. Of course, military guys all think that's hilarious.

Hi everyone,
Had a really tough day today. My terrorist told me he needed to have a "sit down talk" with me.
He informed me that his girlfriend is with child.
I am just beside myself.

What a lucky terrorist!!!!!!!!!
