THE LIBERAL THREAD #3- No Debate Please

My dad was in one of those body bags. How dare that certain lurkers pass judgment on how some of us paid for our college tuition. At the time my dad died, my mother was a stay-at-home mom raising three children. She was able to get a job working for the post office graveyard shift and went to school during the day so she could have a career. We would not have survived had we not had those additional VA and SS benefits. The VA benefits were promised to us (kids) if we went to college. Then along came Reagan and -- poof! Bye-bye! (right as I was graduating from HS)

BTW, there was never any doubt that I wouldn't work while going to college. The benefits were going to go towards tuition and books, and would have given me a greater opportunity to attend a better school.

No one knows when life is going to leave you with a bowl of lemons. We took those lemons and made them into lemonade. It would have been nice though if the government had made good on it's promises to the families of war veterans. That's one huge reason while I could never be a conservative! I just don't agree with their philosophy of me, myself, and I. Never have and never will.

I am so sorry you went through that. Take a look at the homeless vets on the street. They say more then 20% of the homeless are veterans. We take real good care of them don't we? :sad2:

I guess if you live out in the country somewhere you can bury your head in the sand..Walk the streets of DC, Boston, or NY and your heart would break. Many of them became addicted to drugs (they were rampant in Vietnam) and many just lost their minds.

Unrelated, but I'm having an ethical problem:

The twins are taking a massive nap. Do I wake them up now or let them continue to sleep and let the Hubs, who does betime, deal with the scary repurcussions later when he comes home?

I think I might just be letting them sleep . . . . .

I say let them sleep.:thumbsup2

Hi everyone,
Had a really tough day today. My terrorist told me he needed to have a "sit down talk" with me.
He informed me that his girlfriend is with child.
I am just beside myself.

Why? It's God's blessing! Imagine what you can get for those photo's?

I'm so glad I found this thread. :goodvibes

I live in a very conservative area of Los Angeles county and some of the garbage that goes on here disgusts me. :scared1: I grew up in L.A. in a liberal home, with two hard working parents who believed in helping out our fellow citizens. They hated Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes. They believed that government was there to help the less fortunate, help equalize opportunities for everyone, and make sure the little guy was not screwed over by greedy conservatives or corporate America. :hippie: My parents never voted for a Republican and I intend to continue that tradition! I was pretty disillusioned with government under the current occupant in the oval office. :clown: It was so depressing seeing what our country had become. Everything was so cynical. :sad2: When I first heard Barack Obama (on Oprah- a show I never watch) about two years ago, I felt like he was reading my mind. :worship: He summed up everything I felt was lacking in our country. I was ecstatic on November 4, 2008. :dancer: Seeing the Republicans go down in flames was just the icing on the cake. ::yes::

Glad you found us too. We will keep you updated, but we also have some fun to offset these turbulent times..;)

:welcome:
Welcome to our happy home!!! We were pretty ecstatic here on election day, too! We had to keep pinching ourselves to make sure we weren't dreaming. Now, we are counting down the days until Obama becomes our president. I'm glad you're here to join us!

From the wife of an old Vietnam vet to the child of one who was lost please accept my  and gratitude for your family's sacrifice.

I'm tempted to respond to Teresa's post but I can only say I wish those on her side of the 'road' were more willing to provide for every child who is born into this world because they deserve care and a good life.

I'm sorry for posting on your thread, but I was just wondering, does this go for the unborn children who were aborted also, or are their lives not valuable?

Gosh, who would have suspected you of all people (a self-proclaimed "peace-maker") would lurk, let alone post on our thread?

The answer to your question is not yes or no. It depends on many factors of which have been debated ad nauseum on many abortion threads.

In the end, though, PART, of what makes me a liberal is the belief that the woman's life takes precedence over the life of the embryo.

And we as a society can start to show how much we value the life of children by making sure those who are born have health care (for starters!) as well as giving their parents help to raise those born children even if the parents had the audacity to be poor when they gave birth!

Maybe this is where the tires meet the road. It's one thing to tell others what to do, but when it comes to the fallout of that decision, well, they want no part in it. It's me, myself, and I. I see that a lot, and personally, when I see it, I don't find it very flattering.

Our Nation is based on a Collective US, and when more than half of it has fallen down, it doesn't reflect well on any of us. This could go for divorce rates, teenage motherhood, those with no medical care, those with disabilities and limited resources to fight it, infant mortality, our lousy education system that has placed our children perilously low when compared to other Nations, none of THIS reflects well on US. But again, this is where the tires meet the road. Thankfully I've stayed on the road and will help others do the same in the non-judgmental way I always have. I am lucky to have what I have, and if I can help someone else, no matter how I got what I have, well, I'll choose to help others.

But how many others out there actually make that choice? Not too many... As Me, Myself and I have really prospered since the 80's

On the 17th day pre-Obama, my SO gave to me
