But here is something that is getting just a teeny bit of press. Perhaps it needs its own thread. Please feel free to post it separately if you wish.

GOP Gags Witnesses on Credit Card Woes

They came to the nation’s capital this week from as far away as Denver, Chicago and Niagara Falls—five people who’d had tough experiences with their credit cards and were asked to share those tales with a House panel. Instead, they ran headfirst into the buzz-saw of Washington politics when the panel’s Republicans insisted the visitors allow their lenders to discuss their financial histories publicly—in any forum, at any time.

For four of the five, it was a deal-breaker. Instead of signing the waivers (pdf) allowing them to testify Thursday, they all sat silently in the audience.

"I didn’t want all my … information out there for just anybody," said Denver’s Susan Wones, who saw the interest rate of her JP Morgan Chase card jump from 0 percent to 23 percent in one month last summer, without notification or explanation. "I’m extremely upset I can’t talk about this."

Marvin Weatherspoon, a grandfather from Chicago, echoed the tale. "The waiver was very vague," said Weatherspoon, who claims his card rate jumped from 4.25 percent to roughly 25 percent in the wake of one late payment to Bank of America. "It didn’t address the issues we were here to deal with."

The controversy came as members of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Consumer Credit met to discuss legislation that would add a number of consumer protections to current credit card policy. Among the changes, the bill would prevent card sponsors from applying interest rate hikes to existing balances. It would also require issuers to provide 45 days notice of such hikes, and increase the minimum advance billing requirement from 14 to 25 days.

Bill sponsor Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said her proposal will add balance to a market that has grown wildly off-kilter. "The credit card industry has been clear about the responsibility imposed on consumers: make your minimum payments on time and stay under your limit

Yeh, but they don't need to do that, the Dem's are imploding in on themselves, McCain's win is all but certain to be honest... The DNC has shown nothing but poor judgement in this ongoing saga, there's nothing pointing to that getting any better... These people are hate mongering, fear mongering Monsters, and that is all they are. Iraqi armed forces were interviewed by CNN reporter Arwa Damon, they all want a Democrat in the WH because they see what the Republican's do... it makes no difference... we invade their country, Bush says it is romantic to be on the frontlines and nobody says anything. The American people will do as they have always done, vote for fear...

"I must say, I'm a little envious. If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed. It must be exciting for you … in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history and thanks." GWB

I go to Mass to worship God and learn how to better live a Christian life. I don't go to Mass to hear about politics and I've been lucky enough to attend churches that rarely mention issues such as abortion and gay marriage. I've been lucky never to have a Priest tell me who to vote for and I've never had a candidate speak at any Church I've ever been to.

My faith influences my concern for the poor, I can't pretend that it doesn't, but it also reminds me that I am called to love all people and work for justice for all people-not just the ones who believe as I do. I do that by supporting the Constitution as strongly as I can and voting for politicians that I believe will do the same.

Fits are you kidding? You've never heard the whole abortion/gay rights thing in your church? Wow :confused3 My mother really screwed me up, she started me at a right wing church & just kept going from there, I heard this stuff EVERY week and worse! This was an Evangelical church, but still, we had this drilled into our heads at every turn! (by the way I can say I'm jealous you did not have these experiences)

I have had the same experiences as Fits--it may be that we're in NY/NJ. I think some of the priests feel the same way many of the people do--I know my uncle (a priest for over 40 years) feels that divorce may not be so bad, gay marriage isn't a terrible thing, etc.

I'll take the first shift in the search for the "John McCain is our guy thread".

I think the reason there isn't a thread specifically mentioning McCain in the title is because there is only one Republican nominee so the Conservative Thread is basically the McCain thread.

It is my understanding that the Obama and Clinton threads only came about because there was so much fighting on the Liberal Thread by each of their supporters.

You're missing the big point, which is you guys spend 90% of your time bashing Obama/Hillary (take your pick) and about 10% praising McCain. Seems a bit out of proportion for someone everybody claims to support and admire so much.

Well I think the conservatives are talking about what is in the news, which is hilary and barack. McCain is not really in the headlines now.

Besides, it's boring to say nice things, LOL.

I double dog dare you to head over to the con thread and start the list.:rotfl:

I'm sorry, just reading the quote makes me want to throw up... I'm sorry to be graphic, but it is beyond disgusting to read the words.

Who's going to start this as a thread?

OK, I will not debate anything here.... but if there is anyone with an hour to kill to read an Obama interview by the Chicago Tribune and not debate it, here it is, I personally thought it was one of the better more precise newsprint articles I've seen. Very clear on the facts, and they didn't dance around their questions. Whether you believe Obama on anything he says is up to you

Somehow I am not surprised... it's the same old veil of secrecy... The economy is doing just fine (as Bear Stearns falls to the wayside, but then is pumped up at the last minute)

It's an exciting and romantic war.

Must have been because we were Evangelical :scared1: But I heard it ALL... How I ever got away from it I'm not sure, I think I just got so sick of the politics and the back biting from within the church I was sick of it all...

:confused3 I don't understand your comment. My post was about the lack of enthusiasm I see for McCain from his supporters and didn't really have anything to do with Obama.

You said we spend 90% of our time bashing each other instead of the other guy... so I will not bash anyone... you have a point....

McCain's supporter's don't even need to have enthusiasm, all they have to do is go vote Republican... meanwhile the democrats are killing each other with the rhetoric.... The people standing at the end of this will only be the republican's, you have a good point....

But, to that end a good article was posted regarding Obama, I wanted to put it out there, but will not debate if people believe it or if they don't.... just as if someone wanted to put any other writing out there, I will read it without debating it here on this thread.

Yeah, right. :lmao:

No matter how you want to slice this pie, there is no thread extolling the virtues of voting for John McCain. Please, go ahead and start one the way you started an anti-Obama thread.

Here's a good thread title you might want to use: "Let Me Tell You About John McCain and Why You Should Vote For Him."

Go ahead: Count the ways from healthcare to ending the war to renegotiating NAFTA, etc., etc., etc.

No, I said the Conservatives spend 90% of their time bashing our candidates instead of supporting their own.

But since you mentioned it, I'm not exactly thrilled with the in-fighting we ourselves are doing either. I find it counter-productive at the very least.

Ahh on the first sentence (they should bash our candidate, that's their job), and double Amen on the 2nd....

Just seems to me that I can find plenty of good things to say about both our candidates and also find some time to bash McCain. They seem to have it reversed. Yes, it's their job.... but building up your own man first should be tops on their list, not the bottom. JMHO
