The Last Thing I Need...

The last thing I need to worry about - my son has been having to go to the bathroom ALL THE TIME lately. (pee) I noticed a few days ago - and then yesterday the babysitter said something AND he had an accident during his nap (which hasn't happened in over a year). He's been waking up with a soaked Pull-Up (they've been dry or barely wet for weeks now). And then today at preschool he had an accident (which hasn't happened since the week we trained him - TWO YEARS AGO). When he's home he goes pretty much every hour. We went to the doc. yesterday and she did a urine test - no sugar and no signs of an infection. They're going to run more tests on it and I should have results "early next week" - we leave for WDW Wednesday! I know I was going to have to plan potty breaks - just take him and have him try every once in awhile, but now - my gosh - I'm going to be crazy making him go every time we pass a restroom - oh - the time we'll be wasting touring WDW's bathrooms. :sad2:

A little guy in my class last year was going a lot during the day. It turned out he had a virus in his urinary tract/bladder not an infection. I am not sure what the Dr gave him but it did clear up pretty soon after that.

My son at 10 started going a lot. That is a symptom for diabetes because they drink more. I took him in and he had type I diabetes. I'm not sure if a urine test is always accurate. I insisted on a blood sugar test and the results came back as diabetic. It was a shock but our life is now just a different normal. It could be a lot worse. Good luck.

While I can't say anything to you to calm you down ... I'll tell you what we did when my daughter was potty training (she's no longer insterested in it, which is even more annoying).

Anywho, we just took pictures of every bathroom stop. I know that sounds silly, but it was something enjoyable for us. She would pose for the camera, outside of the bathroom. We saw a lot of bathrooms that trip, and I wish she would get interested in peeing in the potty again ... I wouldn't mind touring some bathrooms again. (She'll be four in Jan, but since we stopped school, she just doesn't care about going in the potty)

Hmmm...that is strange. When he goes, is he going a lot, or just a little? Is he straining, or complaining of pain? That would seem to indicate a virus or infection (but you said the doctor ruled out an infection)....

Does he have excessive thirst? As a pp said, that can be a sign of diabetes, but lots of children just drink a lot, too. Could it be that your child is just getting engrossed in play and suddenly forgetting to go to the bathroom, before it's too late?

Wet pullups at night aren't such a big deal -lots of children are deep sleepers and/or don't have a large enough bladder to hold it, so I don't think it's unusual for a child to go from barely wet to soaked.

I think it's good your doctor is running additional tests.

His doctor said that he'd have other symptoms of diabetes - increase thirst, stomach pains, and weight loss - so she doesn't want to run blood tests yet...

I might just do this! I love to scrapbook and it would make for a funny story! Good luck with the potty training!

When he goes - he goes a lot! He's not complaining of pain. And if I ask him if it hurts when he goes to the bathroom he says, "Only sometimes when I poop." :rotfl:

He may have been engrossed in play, but usually he'll make it to the toilet in time.

I guess I can only wait for the other results. And planning on MANY bathroom stops while at the parks.

My son did not have any other symptoms, either. The doctor did not want to do the test, but I insisted. He called me first thing the next morning and said to get my son to the hospital immediately. Over and over they told us because our son was diagnosed quickly, it was much easier to treat and train him. I am so thankful I insisted on the test. Statistics show that 1/3 of all diabetics are not diagnosed. I do not know why your doctor is hesitant to do a blood test. If you know any diabetics, see if you can borrow their glucose monitor just to eliminate the possibility. You can even buy one at Walgreens or Target cheaply.

Interesting...and then tonight while going to the bathroom he said, "It hurts inside my p*nis." So, uh maybe we're looking at an infection. And then later he said, "My stomach hurts." So, uh maybe he's been listening to me describe what we need to watch for to my husband.

If this doesn't clear up I'll push for the blood test - I think she didn't want to do one because she didn't want to draw blood from a 4 year old?

You did the right thing by going to the doctor, and keep watching for signs of pain in the groin and stomach.

My youngest started to do this last year and then it quit. She had a growth spurt at the same time our doc said that it happens because some organs don't always keep up. In month she was fine again.

6 Months later same thing happens again. We wait a few days instead of worrying. Then one day she is a little sick 100 temp so we keep her home from daycare. 5 hrs later 105 rush her in to the doc find out she has a bladder infection.

So I guess it can go both ways. I would not worry right now unless you find blood in the urine or he has a temp. Yes it can be sign of diabetes, but there are other things to test before you get to that.

I just hope nothing happens next week - while we're in DISNEY WORLD!

i know drawing blood is not *fun* but seriously, it's not that big a deal either. obviously your ped knows best, and if she were worried i'm sure she'd simply insist, but just to ease your mind if you end up having to have it done...

my dd8 had to have blood drawn all the time when she was younger (she had a seizure disorder and needed her medication levels monitored, then all the ER trips and hydrations when she was sick - she'd get dehydrated quickly when vomiting, etc). anyway, the blood labs have very, very experienced people working there, and they have these really, really thin needles (butterfly needles they called them to my dd). again, it's not a day at the circus, but it's not the end of the world either. DD could hardly feel the needle going in they're so thin - it's more scary than painful, and if you end up having to get it done, distract ds so he's not watching it go in, and go to the toy store after (we did that a lot!):thumbsup2

good luck and i hope everything turns out fine!

You can also get a glucose monitor (Bayer Breeze2) at CVS this upcoming week for free after Extra Care Bucks and mail in rebate.

Sort of related, sort of not, but my son once complained of an ear ache. He also had an on/off fever. I took him to the Dr. and there were no signs of infection. This lasted for a few more days, I kept calling and finally they had him come in again. The infection showed up this time.

Sometimes symptoms can start before infection shows up on the doctor's end.

Of course, it could just be regression, which happens to most kids somewhere along the line.

Another vote for just a growth spurt. We went through this with my sons right after major growth spurts. Like Paull117 said it has to do with some organs not gowing as fast as the rest of them. It would last a few weeks and then everything would be back to normal. Same thing as with your son when they went it was a lot each time and they did not complain of any pain.

Like you we also noticed the increased bathroom breaks and took them to the doctor to rule out diabetes as we have a family history of it.
