I live in the Savannah area and still have not eaten there after 3 years because of the lines. There are people milling all around on the sidewalks, plus there is a line. My husband works downtown and I can ask him if getting there early helps, but I would think if they open at 11, you should be in line at 10:30. I don't know about your kids, but mine wouldn't be too happy to wait so long for lunch after a long car ride.
There is another restaurant serving similar food. The Wilkes Dining Room used to be Mrs. Wilkes Boarding house. Here, you are seated at large communal tables and they bring out all the food family style and everyone passes and passes and passes. I have been there with my kids, but there aren't a whole lot of kids there usually. You can find the web site and read about it. There, I know, if you are early, you can get in without a wait.
Possibly more fun for kids, though less of a culinary adventure for you, would be the Pirates House Restaurant. Very touristy and service can be slow, but there's not usually a wait to be seated if you arrive by 12 and the buffet is pretty good and takes care of that whole slow service thing. They also have their own parking lot which can be a plus.
Good luck!
