The Lady and Sons in Savannah?

We'll be passing through Savannah around lunchtime on our December trip, and we're thinking of stopping for lunch at The Lady and Sons. Can anyone tell me how child-friendly they are? We'll have a 6 year old, a 4 year old, and a 3 month old. It's mostly the baby I'm concerned about; the other 2 are pretty good in restaurants. Also, in case it's not an appropriate place— they have take out, right?

Thanks!

We were there last year. I had my 7 yr. old with me. I did see other people with smaller kids. They have a buffet, and a regular menu. We got the buffet----awsome!!! It is a crowded place, so if you get the buffet with the kids, it could be a pain going back, and forth.

There were booths available, the baby could set in a carrier in the booth. It might be crowded to sit in the aisle.

Not sure about the take-out.

The restaurant can get very busy, and loud. We walked up on a Thurs. and got a table approx. 2-1/2 hours later. They take reservations. We didn't know where it was or that we would be close. Just wandering around, and my niece yelled "that's the restaurant from Oprah"

I would call as you get closer and know what time you can be there by. If you have to wait, there is lots to do and see.

Have fun!! It's a neat experience.

Thanks for the information. The menu had me drooling yesterday! Has it been on Oprah? I just know it from watching Paula Deen on the Food Network, and everything she makes always looks soooo good.

How busy do you think it is when it opens at 11? I'm hoping if we eat early enough, we can get out before the lunch crowds start.

I live in the Savannah area and still have not eaten there after 3 years because of the lines. There are people milling all around on the sidewalks, plus there is a line. My husband works downtown and I can ask him if getting there early helps, but I would think if they open at 11, you should be in line at 10:30. I don't know about your kids, but mine wouldn't be too happy to wait so long for lunch after a long car ride.

There is another restaurant serving similar food. The Wilkes Dining Room used to be Mrs. Wilkes Boarding house. Here, you are seated at large communal tables and they bring out all the food family style and everyone passes and passes and passes. I have been there with my kids, but there aren't a whole lot of kids there usually. You can find the web site and read about it. There, I know, if you are early, you can get in without a wait.

Possibly more fun for kids, though less of a culinary adventure for you, would be the Pirates House Restaurant. Very touristy and service can be slow, but there's not usually a wait to be seated if you arrive by 12 and the buffet is pretty good and takes care of that whole slow service thing. They also have their own parking lot which can be a plus.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. Usually we stop and eat a picnic in Forsyth Park, so our only reason to eat in a restaurant this time would be to visit The Lady and Sons. It sounds like getting a reservation might be the thing to do over waiting in line— my kids definitely won't want to wait long, and neither will I! :bounce:
