The JRBDAD Family Poly DREAMING on the Boardwalk

How about a quick walk to Epcot? Gotta love the location!

We had to twist DD's arm for a picture with Mary Poppins -- no wait!

No arm twisting with Marie:

Back to the Boardwalk after a few rides, Test Track, a Kim Possible mission, etc. Loved the new booth with "Beads for Life" -- have you seen this? They are taking recycled WDW paper (brochures etc) and making beads out of them? Each color represents something. VERY COOL!

Couple of pics once we got back:

DD wanted to try the smores:

IMG_3849.jpg

Not much to tell after walking the Boardwalk for awhile. We went back to the concierge lounge for dinner -- we were surprised at the amount of food and the variety. Not the same as the Poly or the GF concierge, but probably about like BC. Food was good -- even things that the kids would eat. So that worked out well.

I had the concierge make us reservations for a late lunch the next day at the Hollywood Brown Derby (one of our favs). No problem :highfive:

We all decided we were a little tired and it was beginning to rain -- just a little -- so we were going to stay in. DD10 wanted to try the Community Hall (always one of her favorites). They had an umbrella there that she could trace characters onto and then use sharpies to color the characters. That's pretty much all she wanted to do the rest of the trip ;) :umbrella:

We did that until the Community Hall closed down -- then back to the room to crash.

Day 2 has what for us (especially DD10) was a unique experience and then DS13 gave us a "surprise" (in a good way).

OK -- I know you all have been anxiously awaiting the "cliffhanger" that I left off on yesterday......I'll end your suspense.......

We didn't make rope drop -- is that a DVC thing? We never seem to make rope drop anymore? Oh -- it was at Hollywood Studios. We had decided since we were taking advantage of the Boardwalk, we'd focus our efforts on Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

We walked -- its not a short walk, but it is a very pleasant walk. Very enjoyable. It has taken us forever to learn our way around the Boardwalk though. Folks talk about the hallways -- for good reason. Yikes -- at least at Kidani they are straight ;).

Of course we head right to TSMM -- FPs are available for 11:30 a.m (we are 10 minutes late from rope drop). We get our FPs and then get in line, says an hour wait, but it was really about 40 minutes. Enjoyed the ride -- as usual. Then since the waits are all still low on RnRC and ToT, we decide to go to Star Tours and try out the new ride. Even talking DD10 into it along the way -- comparing it to the Jimmy Neutron ride at Universal helped make her feel better.

Anyway..........

Walking past the American Idol Experience, there is a young man looking for folks to audition. I casually say, "any chance we can get a Fast Pass to the auditions for when she is 14 years old?" He says, "why wait? She can audition now. She just can't go on-stage." This is something new.

Hold the phones! Get DD10 a bottle of water and a chance to warm-up! We are off to auditions! Head around to the back of the theater and she is in! Only one adult -- so DW goes with her. Here are the pics:

Her audition room:

IMG_3860.jpg

Her judge - he said that they were glad to start letting folks audition early, because "Disney is about making dreams come true."

IMG_3861.jpg

Hmmmm....I don't have a picture of her with her button -- but she received a button that signified that she had auditioned for the American Idol Experience and of course, wore it the rest of the trip. It garnered a ton of questions and comments.

She sang "Somewhere over the rainbow." The judge said that "she was super cute, has a great voice, and just needs to learn to be less nervous."

We plan on doing this during EVERY WDW trip between now and time time she's 14 :). It was an incredible experience -- she loved it -- had to call her voice/piano teacher after she was out to tell her all about it.

Definitely something that will help us always remember this trip.

The boys and I went to ride Star Tours while DD10 was auditioning -- it was GREAT! Loved the changes to the ride. It was great! Look forward to doing it again.

After that, we met back up with the girls. They decided to shop while we rode RnRC in the single rider line, then we rode ToT and it we got back together and rode the Great Movie Ride. By that time it was time for lunch at the Hollywood Brown Derby!!!! This is one of our favorites -- mainly due to the Cobb Salad. We generally get this as our entree -- it is soooooo good. Couple it with the Fess Parker Riesling -- mmmmmmmm.

Now for the DS13 surprise.

The boys ordered the tempura fish and chips -- they really liked it. It also came with a salad. DS15 has started eating salads -- thanks to his GF. DS13 -- well, not so much. I kept trying to get DS13 to eat his salad and he wasn't buying it. Finally DW said, "If you eat that salad, Dad will take us to the Rose & Crown." Huh? What? Sure -- no problem, I figure it is a pretty safe bet.

It begins:

IMG_3864.jpg

DS15 offering encouragement (he LOVES the Rose & Crown):

IMG_3865.jpg

We are all surprised:

IMG_3868.jpg

No one can believe it!:

The proof:

Me on the phone with the concierge trying to make a ressie at the Rose & Crown:

IMG_3876.jpg

Mom really likes the Rose & Crown too -- she's so proud:

IMG_3877.jpg

Not much to report on after that. But, regardless -- a day we won't soon forget for several reasons.

We rode a few more rides, then the weather started to get bad. Somehow we walked up to the boat just as they were able to set sail again and got off at the Swalphin and walked back to the Boardwalk from there.

The kids decided to swim a bit, Mom & Dad walked the Boardwalk, checked out the art gallery, then we went back to the concierge lounge to eat.

Too much to ask for the food to be great two days in a row -- it was OK, we focused on the salads -- even the staff said that the entree was an "acquired taste." It was some kind of rolled-up leaves with rice in the middle -- not something a diabetic needs to be eating anyway. The wine was good ;).

The kids went back to the Community Hall for DD10 to continue to work on her umbrella. DW & I talked and decided -- again -- we weren't ready to go home. We talked to the concierge and were able to get one more night -- at an AP rate. So there you go.

Not done yet! :)

This is our "extra" day -- somehow we always seem to manage at least one :D.

The night before we had the concierge arrange our "victory" dinner for DS13 at the Rose & Crown. But we all decided on AK for the morning.

After breakfast in the concierge lounge -- we were off. Couldn't really decide on the bus or driving -- finally, my lazy streak kicked in and we decided to take the bus. Only waited a few minutes, but we had forgotten that they stop EVERYWHERE along the way -- the Swan, the Dolphin, the Yacht Club, the Beach Club, Blizzard Beach. Oh well, another rope drop missed :).

We weren't too late -- so we make our way to the safari, the wait was only about 20 minutes. I let DS15 take pictures:

IMG_3920.jpg

This guy almost seemed to want to ride with us:

IMG_3922.jpg

IMG_3933.jpg

IMG_3936.jpg

DW & DD10 went to Dinoland -- one of DD's favorite places:

IMG_3942.jpg

The boys all went to ride EE -- wait said 40 minutes, but I think it was less than 30. Love the line -- the detail is fantastic. I keep telling DW that she needs to go through the line just to see everything, then get out at the end.

We meet back up with the girls. On the way, I notice Maharajah Jungle Trek. I text DW -- have we ever done this? She text back -- I don't think so. So after we meet up, we head over there. It's like the Pangani Forest Exploration -- only you walk through an ancient palace and see different animals.

These bats are bigger than the ones at home:

IMG_3952.jpg

Hard to get good Tiger pics due to the glare from the glass -- by now it was HOT:

IMG_3956.jpg

Not with the Tiger -- guess that is pretty obvious ;):

Lady DeVine:

IMG_3969.jpg

We were then all pretty hungry -- DD10 directed us back to Pizzafari. Yeah, I know, but we knew we had a really good dinner ahead of us at the Rose & Crown. The kids like the pizza ok & DW & I like the salads. Did you know that they started honoring the TiW card!! :woohoodan

After lunch, the boys really wanted to ride Dinosaur -- so the girls shopped while we went to do that:

IMG_3970.jpg

This was really the only place that we saw a massive amount of South American tourists -- actually two very large groups and while in line they decide to have a "chant-off or maybe it was a sing-off" -- I don't really know, but they sure were enjoying themselves and they were behind us!!

We met back up with the girls and decided on a quick bus ride over to Jambo to shop -- I walked around the resort a little. Then we very easily took a bus back to AK and then almost immediately caught one to Boardwalk, et al.

We decide to get off at the first stop -- the Swan and walk back to the Boardwalk from there -- easy peasy, fairly early afternoon still at this point. To the concierge lounge for a light snack and some water -- then we are off again!

Over the Epcot, DW & DD10 are on a mission to find a specific shirt that they didn't buy earlier. So they go to Mousegears. The boys and I decide on Test Track, single rider line -- we are on and off in less than 20 minutes :highfive:

Find the girls in Mousegears and help look -- no luck -- they are sold out :(.

So -- we have some time before out ressie at the Rose & Crown -- how about Captain EO? Yes -- we subject the kids to it -- or at least that's what they said after. DW & I loved it -- we saw it on our only pre-kid trip to WDW so it was a trip down memory lane. Yes, we did think it was "campy" -- the kids just thought it was lame. They were pretty vocal about it too. Hey, it was air conditioned.

Still had a little time, so we hit some of the shops around the entrance to the World Showcase and then......who do we see?

IMG_3972.jpg

Just when I think DD10 is over characters -- she takes off running. Then we wait, then it rains, then Duffy goes on break, then we wait, then finally he's back. He was a HOOT! So funny, so personable, so interactive -- we had a wonderful time with him.

He was commenting on her American Idol Audition Button:

IMG_3975.jpg

His rendition of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" -- without words of course:

IMG_3977.jpg

IMG_3982.jpg

Finally, the rain stops at just the right time and we are off to dinner:

DS13 and all his hard work on the salad has finally paid off:

IMG_3971.jpg

IMG_3983.jpg

After dinner -- this really was "somewhere over the rainbow" ;)

IMG_3986.jpg

What a great last day -- we had so much fun. Wish we could spend more time together as a family more often.

We head back to the Boardwalk due to the thread (and actual) rain -- we've had bad experience with rain on prior trips and have had to find out way to the local Apple store for a new iPhone because of it. :smoke2: Not wanting it to happen again, back to the resort -- besides, they have late night desserts and cordials in the concierge lounge. :highfive:

We had hoped to watch Illuminations at Epcot -- but due to the :umbrella: we decide against it.

After we were there a little while, we start hearing the fireworks -- I ask the CM, can we see it from the lounge balcony -- she says "yes" -- out we went:

IMG_3987.jpg

IMG_3988.jpg

IMG_3996.jpg

What a great way to end the night!

Back to our room to clean up and pack up. Then I hear more fireworks -- we step out onto our balcony to watch part of Wishes:

IMG_4000.jpg

IMG_4001.jpg

IMG_4008.jpg

This was our location -- top floor -- just barely to the left (as you are facing) the Boardwalk Bakery:

IMG_3886.jpg

It was very private.

No real pictures from today -- we got up, ate in the concierge lounge, called bell services and the valet, got in the Griswald-mobile and hit the road.

We pulled out just before 8:00 a.m. and pulled into our driveway about 9:30 p.m.

First time we got home and nothing was wrong -- so that was nice.

I'm going to include a "wrap-up" post.

Thanks for taking the trip with us.

Look forward to AKV between Christmas & New Years -- honestly, I'm not sure we can wait that long ;).

Wow! Where to start? If this wasn't our favorite vacation, it was definitely in the top two. My vote is for #1!

Here goes -- in no particular order:

-- would love to fly and save the time of the drive, but we have such a great time and the kids get along so well. Some of our favorite moments are laughing along the way. Trying "hole-in-the-wall" Mexican restaurants. Watching the kids come up with so many different things that "tickle" them and then they repeat over and over. :hahahaha: It takes some patience -- but it was fun.

-- they say you can't go home again -- they were wrong! We loved the Poly the last time we stayed there (1995 -- pre-kids) and we loved it again this time. DW & I were talking about next year and I said we'd be able to use DVC points for our pre-cruise stay -- her comment, save the points and let's book the Poly again. Heaven help me if they ever do build a Poly DVC.

-- we've stayed concierge for short stays several times now, it really does seem to make sense for us -- if we can get an AP rate. The level of service goes up from Disney's already high standards, the lounges are comfortable, and the food/drinks are good, we get to use them for at least one if not two meals/day.

-- we can go to WDW without setting foot in the parks -- I was a little concerned about this, but for 2-3 days, we were fine. We really got to enjoy all that the Poly had to offer.

-- I have nothing to compare it to -- but -- I really think that Disney gets cruising right. Last year we didn't think that a 3 night was long enough, this year we didn't think a 5 night was long enough.

-- Did I mention my family likes concierge? The concierge on the Dream was incredible -- almost so much so that I'm having a hard time putting it into words. It's definitely the people. No doubt -- DD10 said that the concierge people on the Dream were some of the nicest CMs she's ever met. We had so much pixie dust this trip -- with a huge heaping of it with our upgrade on the cruise. We booked the Dream for 5 nights next year while onboard, only because the 7 nights on the Fantasy were so expensive. So we booked a "dummy date" to use for 2013 as soon as the itineraries come out. We've debated 1 stateroom or two on the Dream for next year for the past several weeks (well two weeks) -- yesterday with the help of our TA, we decided on 1 stateroom again -- the same one! Yes -- this next year we will pay for our pixie dust. We love the idea of being the first group on the ship and having first access to the excursion, reservations, etc.

-- The Family Cabanas on Castaway Cay are FANTASTIC! Again, more pixie dust to even be able to get one -- now we want one everytime.

-- Loved Remy & Palo was just as wonderful on the Dream as it was on the Wonder. Having done both -- next year we may just book the Palo brunch (haven't tried that yet) -- so we can enjoy more time with the entire family for our meals. If you think you are only going once -- do both!

-- why would anyone book a cruise without a travel agent? Can't say enough good things about ours.

-- Atlantis was awesome -- could see an extended stay at Harborside -- one day.

-- the spa package is probably worth it for 5 days or longer, plus don't forget about the showers in the locker rooms - -they are HUGE and it frees up time and space for others back in the stateroom, if you use the one in the locker room. Very private and everything you need is right there.

-- Make your kids participate in the kids' clubs -- even your teenagers -- they will thank you (and you will thank me) later. We had to push ours -- but once we did, they did thank us. They have a "meet & greet" the first night -- but it is really during the group activities (ie. scavenger hunt) that they begin to make friends. My boys are still texting the friends they made on the cruise - two weeks later.

-- Castaway Cay is as close to paradise as I've ever been or may ever be.

-- if anyone ever walks off a Disney cruise and says that they were bored -- they TRIED to be bored. We've been on two -- a total of 8 nights and don't feel like we've done 1/3rd of what is available.

-- I've seen other boards (multiple) with complaints on the Dream -- comparing it to the Wonder & the Magic. In my humble opinion, after only being on the Wonder once -- the Dream was everything it should have been and then some. The service was spectacular, the food was awesome, the cabin(s) -- both of them -- were fantastic. We would have a very hard time finding anything to complain about. Rotational dining is great -- our servers couldn't have been any better -- and I thought that after we got off the Wonder too.

-- we all hate disembarkation day :(. Not the process, just the leaving.

-- gotta love the Boardwalk location -- walking to both Epcot and DHS -- our preferred method of travel

-- while we didn't get to try BWV -- the Boardwalk Inn was very nice -- and DD10 really liked the Community Hall, even with all of us in one room -- it seemed HUGE after being on a cruise.

-- had some friends ask me if we were going to add-on DVC points at the BWV after this stay -- while we liked the location and the resort was very nice -- our funds are dedicated toward DCL -- unless of course a Poly DVC shows up ;).

-- all the activities on the Boardwalk at night were so much fun, a great way to unwind from the parks.

-- the new Star Tours is really good.

-- Captain EO doesn't seem to cross generations :)

-- the more we go to WDW as a family, the more we seem to want to go.

-- it is worth it to try everything once - DisneyQuest, the SeaRaycers -- enjoyed both -- not sure I'll do them again though.

-- we hate to leave and nearly every trip -- we add on one or more days -- it pays to have an AP :).

All good things must come to an end and Dad has to go back to work to pay for this trip and the trips after.

That's it -- well at least until we show up at Kidani the day after Christmas.

Thanks so much for the additional updates!

The view from the lounge at BWI looks great - and so does your Boardwalk view. I just contacted IPO to add "boardwalk view, please" to our BWI CL room requests. As first-time cruisers and parents of pre-teen boys (although we also have a pre-schooler), we appreciate the tips! Our boys are planning to stop by the Edge the first night for the "meet and greet," so we'll see what they think.

Just one question - our oldest is a rather adventurous eater and loved evening appetizers in the BC lounge. When he heard about your report, he was wondering if you could recall what they served during evening appetizers at BWI.

And what a fun and spontaneous way to end your trip! Love the story about the Brown Derby salad - trying to think of a similar incentive to get our middle son to eat salad - not sure I can!

Thanks again!

You are more than welcome -- happy to share.

Honestly, I don't really remember what all was in the BWI lounge. I remember that for the most part, we really liked the food. Great variety and plenty of it. We made several meals out of it.

That was quite a trip report!

I can't believe how lucky you got with the concierge upgrade, the fishing spots opening, and the Castaway Cay cabana. I'm completely jealous of your Polynesian and Boardwalk stays, too.

This was already said here, but I knew Melanie from the cruise staff too in May 2009. I was on the Dream in May 2011 - I didn't even know she was on the ship, but I happened to see her walking around the pool areas and she remembered me from two years ago! It's amazing how the minute or two we chatted made such a positive impact on my entire trip.

Robert

loved your trip report!!!! and BTW you look great and if I was only able to get 85 lbs off of me LOL

Great trip report!!! I'm really jealous of your cabana review. We just might have to reserve one on our next trip. I was trying to decide between the Cabana or the stingray tour. Decisions, decisions...

Thanks for sharing and you had a lot of pixie dust on your trip!

Oh and we recently stayed AKL Conceirge - DVC and love it. I was a little leary as I was worried about the food offerings to be bland. WOW... I was so wrong. I loved it all. I liked having ice tea every day available. The appetizers were great. We never made it back in time to try the afternoon tea menu but we did the Breakfast, lunch appetizers, dinner appetizers and dessert. My dh loved the free drinks. Very nice...
