My dh, who is in grad school and has previously earned a b.s. in computer science went to a job fair last wednesday, and found this company(goverment agency) we were both really excited about. We found out today they imposed a hiring freeze. :(

Is anyone out there actually looking for someone? We are both fusterated that the job opening out there are unreasonable more often then not, the company wants you to know EVERYTHING even there own custoum software. Not only that they don't want to pay you anything for your knowledge. The single most fusterating thing is entry level jobs that require 3-5 years experience. If its an entry level job requiring experience is ridiculous. The other ridiculous thing i have seen is companies trying to get free work done by creating (free) intership positions rather then hire someone. I have no problem with a company that deals in a field offering prestigous positions for little or no pay, but come set up our network and teach us how to use it is a consolting job not an intership.

thanks for listening i just had to vent.

My DS is graduating from college this year, and the job market is tough. He has two jobs that will take him through the summer, but beyond that.........who knows?

We went to a football dinner at his school recently, and I spoke to a student who majored in Computer Science. He said that there's nothing out there.

Best of luck to you! I hope that the market improves soon.

My brother-in-law is/was in telecommunication and there isn't much there, either. He was laid off 8 months ago. He got 2 companies that wanted to hire him only to them have a hiring freeze. One company called him back last month after interviewing 3 months ago  He follows up, they say they will call or that he can call back the following week....... on and on and on.

Same boat here. It is really disheartening to say the least. All I can say is good luck to your DH.

Yep....same here :(
DS graduated in March with a degree in Computer Engineering.
So far no luck....not even many compnaies looking.
No one is hiring.

The job market out there stinks -- especially in the IT field. My DH has been out of work nearly 2 years (to make ends meet he does freelance consulting). He has 14 years of hands on experience. For every job out there, there are several hundred people trying for it and salaries keep dropping.

Good luck to all who are job hunting in the IT sector. Hopefully the economy will turn around SOON!

The next day ... he gets an interview for a summer internship position at another company. I guess posting on these boards is magical. Some more pixie dust please.

btw, they were 'very impressed' with his resume :)

IT market is very very formidable right now. Its very challenging to others.. I do believe that a "false market" was being promoted for a while. There are not that many entry level positions, and anything above entry level.. forget it!

My DH got very lucky. He had hardware, software, telco experience, plus some Microsoft certifications. I can't tell you how many he had to say no to because his programming wasn't up to the par they were looking for, or his network archetecture skills weren't up to the level they were seeking...

But it is challenging.. I remember being a student in the 80's being told by academic advisors.. be a computer science major..you will ALWAYS have a job! How sad is that statment now!

I hear you.
I work in tech support and I am being forced into a miserable internal job change. There really isn't anything I can do beyond "sucking it up" because there is literally nothing out there.

Thousands of IT and customer service jobs have been outsourced to developing countries where they can pay the workers only a fraction of what they pay in the U.S. When you call Microsoft for tech support you may be talking to someone in India! The only job growth I see is in health care, trades and low wage retail.
