The "I've Waited My Whole Life" Christmas Suprise Trip Report-Final/Video Update 2/21

I know it was traumatic for you, but I have to tell you, I watched that video like three times, and cracked up every time! That will be a great one to dig out in ten years to show the kids! :teeth:

Oh My gosh! That video is priceless. Even though the big unveiling of the trip did not go as expected, I am sure that your trip will be fabulous. Thanks for sharing that great video.

Well we are back! We reluctantly came home on Friday 12/22 and have had to work through our Post Disney Depression on Christmas weekend. Not a good combination. Note to self, next time if you travel that week stay through Christmas. It is a major downer to come home from Disney and have your most blue days during what should be the most wonderful time of the year. Not good at all.

So let's begin this trippie with Day One!

December 15th I woke bright and early. I was up by 5:45 and the rest of the house was sound asleep. I showered, got dressed and went on the computer for a few last looks around the DIS. I found the printable pages on the Family Board and printed out quite a few for the kids to color on the plane. I also found a place where you can create your own word searches and crossword puzzles. I made up Disney themed ones and printed those too. I wanted to be armed with lots of distractions for this first ever airplane ride for the kids.

Eventually they all awoke and we all got ready and double and triple checked everything. Then it was time to wait. Wait, wait, wait. Our limo was to come at 8:45am. He called and was running late, just about 5-10 minutes. So we waited some more.

At this point we are all out on our front steps waiting. The kids still don't know a limo is coming, we told them it was just a shuttle van. So imagine their suprise when up our little street comes a huge white limo!
101_5449.jpg
And man this was one pimped out limo! Inside it had the funky lights all around and the ones on the ceiling that changed color. It had to seat 10 or 12 so plenty of room for the 5 of us. Frank the driver encouraged the kids to drink the bottled water in the champagne glasses and they were all over that. And we had Radio Disney coming over the speakers. All was well and we were on our way to Boston!

My biggest fear, well one of them, had been the weather. December in New England you just never know what you are going to get. A snowstorm would have really put a damper on things but we were blessed with great weather for flying and no delays.

Got to the airport by about 10:30 and checked in. Check in and security went well and after bathroom breaks and Dunkin Donuts stops we were waiting at the gate to board.

This was the kids first time flying. I have always been too afraid to fly with them. I hate the idea of being somewhere and if you have cranky/crying/loud children there is just no where to go. So I avoided air travel with them for a very long time. Now that they are older (9, 7 and 4) I felt better but I was still nervous. Not about the girls, they would be fine. But Goofy. Goofy has two modes, sleeping and loud. It isn't that he screams, no that isn't it. He is just exuberant, he is passionate about life and his indoor voice can be some people's outdoor voice.:scared1: He just gets excited about alot of things and talking VERY LOUDLY is his way of sharing that with you. Again, it is a good thing he is cute!

Flying to Orlando I figured the flight would have lots of children but I was very wrong. It was a fully booked flight but there were maybe 8 children and 3 of them belonged to me. I was shocked! You know I was hoping for more kids so that if mine were a tad loud they would just blend amongst the other cherubs. No such luck.

So we pass out the gum and sit tight waiting to take off. I asked a passing flight attendant if they still gave out the little pins that look like wings for kids and she told me they did not. The look on her face was one of "Come on lady they have not done that for years!" but she did use a very sweet tone with me. Hey I remember getting them when I was a kid and flew for the first time. Granted that was 34 years ago but I thought Goofy would have loved one.

The flight is fine. I sit with the girls and Grumpy sits across the aisle with Goofy. The girls and I colored, did crosswords and played a very long round of War. Goofy colored, listened to his CD with his headphones and played his Leapster. He was amazingly quiet! When the flight ended the older man behind us said to Grumpy what a seasoned traveller Goofy is. Grumpy told him it was Goofy's first time on a plane and older man could not believe it! Proud Mom moment here. :thumbsup2 I just know when older man got his seat and saw Goofy across the aisle he probably thought "OH NO" and to have him be impressed with his airplane behaviour, well that made my heart swell!

Okay, this is getting long winded huh? I'll try to pick up the pace a bit.

We deplane and head to baggage. There we see a man holding a sign with Goofy, Belle and Bashful's name on it. They are feeling pretty special at this point! It is Bob from Sunray Transportation (shout out to Bob!). He helped us collect our things and off we went. He picked us up in a very nice and clean SUV complete with both booster seats that I had requested. He was very friendly and we would use Sunray again in a heartbeat. We made a quick grocery stop (I was in and out within 10 minutes) and we were off to Pop.

The ride was quick and the anticipation was building! Finally we saw the Pop sign and I felt just so happy inside. We were here! We were finally here!

We unloaded, told Bob we would see him in a week and went into Pop. Grumpy and the kids went to the waiting area and I went to check in. There were maybe 3 people ahead of me so the wait was not very long. Check in was easy and I was anxious to see what rooms we got. My biggest request had been connecting. My TA had told me that since our kids outnumbered us we were assured of connecting rooms. Other DISers told me otherwise and so I was nervous. TA was right and we were in connecting, yes! Plus we got our other requests of a high floor (3rd) and non smoking too. Even better our connecting consisted of one room with 2 double beds and one room with a King! We were in the 70s building, the one the huge Mickey with the Phone. We faced the unfinished buildings (which are kind of sad to look at, I hope they finish them someday).

So the CM went over the keys with me and explained that our dining plan was split up. One room had me and the kids, the other had DH by himself. I wish they could put it all together on one when you are sharing 2 rooms like this. It would make it easier.

We walked over to find our rooms. Not too far from Century Hall, a few minutes walk. We were in 6322 and 6323. I would recommend these rooms as being very nice and quiet.

I had read on the DIS about how small the rooms were. When we opened the door I was pleasantly suprised by the size. Bigger than I thought! Reading things here you would expect a phone booth sized room. I thought they were just fine. I would not want to have 4 in one room but for 2 it was great and with the 5 of us having the 2 connecting it really worked out well. We had towel animals waiting for us when we arrived which was cute. Little dogs in the windows.

Okay so at this point we ditch our bags, freshen up quick and we are off to the bus. We have an ADR at Chef Mickey's to make. We find the bus stops and get in the MK line. We don't wait long and that is how it was all week. I was pretty happy with the bus service from Pop. We never waited long at all. We probably had to stand 3 times during the week but the rest of the time we had seats.

So we get to MK and walk over to the Contemporary. The tree out front looks so nice and as we are walkng the 6pm Wishes is going off so we can see some of that. A great way to start our trip!

Check in at Chef Mickey, do the picture in front of the big plate and sit to wait. As would become a pattern all week we wait no more than 5-10 minutes to be called. Another thing I had been concerned about but it worked just fine!

Dinner was great! We loved the buffet and the different selections. The kids enjoyed it as well though they didn't eat much. Belle had 3 mini corn muffins and a slice of pizza. Yup, that is worth the price of a buffet. :sad2: But no worries because we are on the dining plan and even though we paid for this months ago not having to pull out the wallet makes it feel like you are eating for free! So Belle, you want to make your own Sundae after such a substantial dinner? Go ahead, you are on vacation!

Characters came around and we got pictures of all. We forgot Goofy's autograph book in the rush to get to the bus but we knew we'd see these guys again throughout the week so it was okay. Goofy loved seeing all the characters. Belle is getting to be that age. She would do the pictures with them but I could tell that sometimes she felt funny about it, like she is too old for it or something. :sad1: I think she is getting ready to enter those funny pre-teen years. Wish me luck! And Bashful well she committed a cardinal sin. She pulled on Goofy's whiskers. My shy little girl gave them a good yank! Goofy acted all sad and dejected when he left. We had to explain to her that it was not nice to do that. So out of character for her.

We finished our desserts, the kids all had the sundaes and I had several yummy little pastries, and our server brought the bill. He told us he could take all the credits off just one card (remember we have 2 rooms). This would prove to vary from restaurant to restaurant and server to server as the week went on. I really think if they could just put it all on one card in a multiple room situation it would be much easier.

I asked Grumpy to guess what the bill was with tip. He guessed something like $80. Ah no silly man, this is Disney World, try $118. I was SO happy to be on the DDP at this point. $118 that he didn't have to fork over at the moment. The perception is everything when you are married to an el cheapo so I felt good that he felt good. :thumbsup2

We monorailed it back to the MK. We never did get a chance to sit up front, maybe next trip. I was suprised at how packed the monorail was. Remember I haven't been to the World in almost 10 years, you forget somethings. Once at MK we got on a very uncrowded bus back to Pop.

It had been a very busy day. Travelling is tiring, even when you have a later leaving flight and you are really just sitting around all day. I was really glad that we didn't go to a park and that instead we just did the dinner and came back. We were all tired and bedtime went off without a hitch.

Day one, a success!

MVL (Most Valuable Lesson)--Take it easy on that first travel day. As much as part of me had wanted to hit a park that night, other seasoned folks told me to rethink that and I took their advice. It was well worth it. We needed rest to be up for Rope Drop and the dinner at CM was great to get a taste of the Magic!

I'm so glad your back with a little trippie to tell your tales!!!! I hope it was an awesome trip and can't wiat to read all about it!

How were the kids by the morning of departure? Did the excitement build over the evening and throughout the night? Did they wake up with "We're goin' to Disney" excitement?

Your kids are so cute! They "look" well behaved  .

I love hearing anything about the cheapness of your DH...I empathize completely. He loved getting the receipts from our meals, like a bigshot or something :snooty: ....dork!

So far so good! I want to stay at POP so I love all your details! We have a family of 6 so we need 2 rooms too. One for me and one for the rest :thumbsup2 (works for ME!)

See ya next time!

I am absolutely loving this trip report!

Seriously, I'm crying because I'm picturing myself someday suprising my kids in this way! Oh my goodness! I can't wait! :)

Welcome home! I am so not looking forward to the post-trip let down. But, now you can start dreaming about your next trip! Can't wait to read more!

I love, love, love your trip report!!!! I converted my Grumpy to a Disney fan and I am hoping to here the same from you. He went to make us happy and he ended up having a good time and wanting to go back.. Mission Accomplished! I have a Christmas trip in the back in my mind for maybe 2007.....looking forward to the rest.

Thats an awesome trip report. You sound like how my mom gets when she is planning our trips to disney. My dad never wanted to go to wdw. We went once right before they got divorced and that was only because mom booked it without asking him lol. Since they got divorced when I was in fourth grade my mom has taken us to disney 8 times and april will be my tenth. She love planning the trips and we find new and exciting things to do every time. You can def call wdw my happy place! :yay: If you were wondering how if mom took me 8 times so far how april will be ten that is because I talked my grumpy dad into taking us in Aug. It only took 18 yrs but I did talk him into going!

OMG that video is hilarious, not to mention the fac they thought dreidels were in the gift bags.

My DD and I were laughing our head off at your little guy complaining about no presents.

Funny stuff!

Thanks, it makes me laugh too! And esp the dreidel part! I didn't know where that came from since we are not Jewish! LOL!

Saturday December 16th
We awoke to Stitch telling us to get out of bed and no more sleeping! It was 7am and we had hopes to make the bus as close to 8am as possible. We all got dressed and just had Pop Tarts and granola bars in the room. I ran down to the Food Court and filled our 2 mugs, one with Hot Chocolate and one with Coffee. Oh my! What terrible coffee! Even with loads of cream and sugar it was just terrible to Grumpy and I. We are spoiled. We love our Dunkin Donuts and at home we always use flavored cream, French Vanilla being a favorite. Our search for good coffee in the World would continue all week.

Okay we are getting ready to go. One thing I must say is God Bless the Baggalini! I had read of it on the DIS and decided to buy one. When it came in the mail I opened it and thought “This is so small”. I was sure it was going to be a wasted purchase. Was I ever wrong! It holds much more than one would think by looking at it, very deceptive. Being the Mom aka Pack Mule, I had the camera, meds, moleskin (another DIS suggestion that Belle ended up needing to use, thanks DIS!),money, IDs, autograph book, hairbrush and the all important room keys/tickets. Now in the Baggalini is a smart little zippered pouch right in the shoulder strap. PERFECT size for tickets/Photopass cards and makes it really easy to access them.

Okay so we double triple check that we have everything (we do this a lot, that is why we are always running late I think) and we head out to face our first day!

We catch an MK bus at like 8:15 (not bad, I had hoped for 8 but 8:15 is still good). The bus is full but we have seats. Goofy is on my lap and Bashful on Grumpys. They were not fond of the lap thing but I really believe in making as much room on the buses for others to sit. My 4 and 7 year olds really don’t need their own seats. When it was not crowded we let them sit in their own seat but otherwise it was on the lap.

We got to MK and did the first of many bag checks and ticket scans. The bag checks are quick though and we never found ourselves in too huge of a line. Now it was time to wait. There was a lady playing music and dancing with the kids and handing out beads a la Mardi Gras style. The kids got those and we also passed time playing Belle’s Magical Moments handheld trivia game. Good game, got it on ebay. The only downside is when you are wrong it does not tell you the right answer!
101_5468.jpg

Then it started, the Good Morning thing they do! The Mayor, the singing and dancing, the train, the characters! Oh my heart was beating so fast, we were really here and it was really beginning. My kids were all watching, happy shiny faces. This was what we, well I, had waited all year for.

Then it was open and we were swept up in the sea of people making their way to a day of fun and magic. As we came through and stepped onto Main Street it began. The tears. Yes I cried. I couldn’t even see the Castle yet but there was the horse drawn trolley and the Christmas tree and the balloons and sights and sounds and there we were. We were here. My kids were pointing and talking and smiling. I leaned up and kissed Grumpy and just said “Thank You”.
Okay, enough sentimentality, we had a plan to do now. I told my troops to walk with a purpose and off to Fantasyland we headed. I had index cards written out with my plan, I am a TGM-er you know. I got really into making “the plan” and I was so nervous about how it would work out. Like studying all year for a test and then the day off you feel like you forgot it all. More importantly for me I had to remember to be flexible and if the plan had to detour I had to be able to go with it.

Well detour number one. We were behind a whole slew of people in the castle. Dumbo was our goal but by the time we got there, well the line was already long. I knew it was a slow loading ride, I knew it would take a while. Think, think…scrap Dumbo. I know bad Mom. Goofy is telling me he wants to ride Dumbo and I had to detour the troops to Peter Pan. No line there, walked on. All was well. As a side note we never got on Dumbo, not once all week. It was always a long line. I hope Goofy forgives me. We did ride Aladdin’s carpets and Triceratops Spin which are essentially the same ride right? Hopefully missing Dumbo will not scar him for life!

We did Pan twice, switching up who rode with who. They loved it, the way your ship flies, seeing the scenes and how the shirts glowed in the dark at one point. It is the little things isn’t it?

Fantasyland was a breeze to work through this particular morning. We rode Peter Pan twice, Pooh, Snow White, the Carousel, It’s A Small World and the Teacups all by 10am. When we got on It’s A Small World there was a Dream Team member at the entrance. We said hello and I am thinking “Pick me, pick me!” Hoping for a Dream Fastpass. No such luck. The family behind us got picked though, drat we just missed it. However their prize was getting to go in the IASW booth and wave to the boats heading out. Fun? Sure. A “dream”? Me thinks no. But I am sure the little girl had fun and we waved very enthusiastically at her!

Teacups were fun as we all squished into one cup. Who doesn’t love spinning till you can’t see straight with those you love the most? Here is Grumpy hamming it up. He told me my Christmas present was that all week he would not complain or gripe so instead he gave me cheesy smiles and grins like this!
101_5479.jpg

Now we headed to Toontown with the intention of getting on the train to Frontierland. Here is where my plan got tough. As we pass the Barnstormer and Mickey’s house I am telling them to keep walking, we’ll see it a different day. After the way we made our way through Fantasyland they were starting to believe that I actually knew what I was talking about so they humored me and kept walking. We boarded the train, again passing a few Dream Team members as we boarded. Again, a nice hello but that was it. No dreams. Nada. As the train began to move away from the station I saw a man getting in line get a Dream Fastpass. I was happy for him but come on, let’s be honest here, I was bummed too. I would have loved to have gotton one and I won’t keep you in suspense, we didn’t get one all week!

We ride the train and it is a nice little break. When we depart in Frontierland it is all about the mountains! We FastPass Splash and go get in line for Big Thunder. The sign says 20 minutes but it was really more like 10. The kids loved it! Goofy loves a good thrill and loves trains too so this was heaven. Bashful as always had hands in the air, no holding on for her. It was a lot of fun and they wanted to go again but we decided to hop on Splash standby as that line was short too. It was our first time ever on Splash and it did not disappoint. I loved how long it was and themed. So sweet and fun! And that drop, wow! We got very wet, more from the first corner when the other folks going down get you, but it was all good. As we exited we of course stopped to see our ride photo. Always fun to see the look on your face! We never bought any of them though. There were never any I loved enough to buy. I did see a bunch of people taking a picture of their picture though, creative folks.

The mind gets a wee bit sketchy now but I think we walked through Frontierland, met Brer Fox and found our way to Pinocchio’s Village Haus.
101_5481.jpg
I was behind on the plan, it was closer to noon now and the lines to get food certainly showed it. Belle and I got in the food line while Grumpy and gang staked out a table. It moved quickly and we sat down to eat.

I have to go through my receipts but all 3 kids got Kid’s Meals. I think they got Macaroni and Cheese (my mind is kind of a blur on the food) and as would be the norm two of them got grapes and fries and one got grapes and carrots. Sugar free jello all around. I won’t even go there as it has been discussed quite a bit on the restaurant board. I am all for healthy eating *if you choose* but to only offer kids one dessert and have it be Sugar Free Jello? Come on Disney, we are on V*A*C*A*T*I*O*N! Grumpy had the Turkey Panini and I got the pizza purely so that I could share with some of the youngens. We had Strawberry Shortcakes with our meals and so we shared those too though no one was overly impressed. That too became the mantra of counter service all week. While several table services wowed us, the counter service was Eh. Not bad, not inedible, just Eh. I suppose Eh is better than Ewww right?

Okay, so bellies full and having witnessed some young children in desperate need of naps we exited. We went to Mickey’s Philharmagic. I was so excited to see this having read about it and I knew the kids would love it. Well Belle is 9, on the verge of tweendom and she wanted no part of this. “No one wants to see this. It isn’t a ride”. I gently explained that Walt Disney World was not just about rides but had many wonderful attractions and shows and it was just so much more than the “amusement” park she was used to. That went over like a ton of bricks so I had to resort to the whisper in her ear of “Do you have any idea how much money we spent on this vacation? It is not all about you and we are going to see Mickey’s Philharmagic. Everyone will love it” Maybe not my best Mom moment but really I was not going to let her brattiness ruin this so far really good day. So she pouted her way in and sat through it. We all loved it! Bashful and Goofy were reaching out trying to grab things. I thought it was so well done and just fun! One of those things that you walk out of with a smile on your face! Unless you are Belle. I bet, I just know, inside she loved it but she wasn’t going to let that show. She just pouted through it all.

It was now time for that old classic, The Haunted Mansion. We had assured Goofy that it was all just pretend and he was feeling okay. Bashful grabbed my hand and wanted confirmation that this was fake again. She seemed a little nervous but off we went. The sign again said 30 minutes but timing it was more like 12. Got to love that! The kids were freaked out a bit by the stretching room but just stood close and held on to us. Gosh the CMs there are great, so in character! The ride was fun. I found it especially nostalgic since it is one of the rides I remember from my childhood. I found that when doing things like this that I recalled from childhood it made it all the sweeter to see my kids experience it. They loved the part where the ghost is in your Doom Buggy once they realized it really was just pretend.

It was time for a break so we wandered towards Adventureland through Frontierland. On the way we did Splash with our FP. Just as much fun the 2nd time! On the way out we tried to ride Pirates but it was down. Instead we got FP for the Jungle Cruise to use later at night. We kept walking and took the bus back to Pop for a break.

On the way out Bashful bought a Santa Goofy hat that she wore a lot during the week and Goofy got a Mickey Light Saber. That would prove to be the least annoying of his purchases as the week went on. Throughout the day the girls did their first pin trades and were hooked. They only traded with CMs and just had a lot of fun swapping and seeing what pins they could find. It was a really nice activity for them.

Back at Pop we drew the shades (the rooms get VERY dark!) and laid down. I set a wake up call for 4pm as we had dinner at Ohana at 5:30. I’ll save the evening for a little later. We’ve got Ohana and back to Magic Kingdom coming!
