Welcome to my trip report. I have written a few other trip reports here on the DIS and at TourGuideMike.com. I will confess that I am a very long-winded trip reporter. I warn you now, you will get every detail I can remember. Thus the “keeping it real” title…we are a real family on vacation and I will report it as such. You are free to turn back…don’t say you weren’t warned! pirate:

Cast:

Linda (40, OMG did I just type that??)
Chuck (40)
Stephanie (11)
Tommy (9)
Kevin (6)

Our cruise buddies:

Marie, Chris, Marissa (11), Christina (11) & Nicholas (7)
Kristin, Keith, Florence & Kaitlyn (6)

Our story begins on November 5, 2006. Yes, 2006. We are on the Disney Magic, about an hour after pulling out of Key West. My husband, his skin a clammy mixture of green and gray, turns to me and says, “I hope you enjoy this cruise because I am NEVER doing this again.”

[Insert evil witch laugh here] :rotfl2:

Fast forward to early 2008. I am walking 5 miles every day with my neighbor, Marie. Her friend Kristin has just gotten back from a week on the Disney Magic and has convinced Marie to book a cruise for January 2009. We spend a good portion of our walk every day talking Disney Cruise. I feel like an alcoholic helping someone plan a frat party.

Time goes by and we eventually stop talking about DCL, until one day in the fall when Marie mentions that her sister is canceling the cruise. Her girls won’t have their cousins to play with. I can’t take it anymore. The pull is just too strong. I mention that maybe I’ll look into booking the cruise. That maybe it won’t be too expensive and that maybe, just maybe, I can talk Chuck into taking another cruise.

Of course I turn to the internet, where on earth did I get information from in the last century? The price is very expensive, especially since we need two rooms. Again I’m frustrated by the fact that traveling with 3 children is so much more difficult than 2. Marie is saving by putting Nicholas in with Kristin’s mom, Florence. Hmm, does Florence want to take Kevin too? I consider that for all of 2 seconds before realizing that ain’t happening.

I send an email to Small World Travel and receive a quote from Josephine very quickly. I approach Chuck with the idea and he actually considers it. Wow, didn’t see that coming. He loves his wife and he loves his children and he wants to make us happy. He remembers something about worshipping toilet bowls but it’s hazy and distant in his brain. The pain and suffering is remote. He remembers Castaway Cay and how much he loved it there. Cruising to Chuck is like childbirth to mothers…you remember that it hurt but the feeling and the details have vanished from your memory and you’re left with only the good stuff.

I’m just happy that he didn’t run from the room when I mentioned it. He spends some time looking at our money situation and making calculations. We did not rebook onboard last time and we have no discounts available to us. We need 2 rooms b/c the Category 4 family suite is crazy expensive and we’d rather have the extra square footage and two bathrooms. We would love a veranda. Yes, we certainly would love a veranda. Josephine emails back with the price of 2 veranda rooms and I choke and sputter on my keyboard. Josephine also provides us with the price of two Category 9’s on deck 2, just like we had before. While pricey, I do not need an AED to recover from reading the email.

Two days go by and Chuck is still wavering. There are no connecting Cat. 9’s available but it is late September of 2008 and the stock market is crashing more and more every day. We know people will be canceling…who plans a cruise in this crappy economy?! (That’s rhetorical!) Josephine writes back and says connecting rooms became available…rooms 2622 and 2624. I stare at the monitor. NO WAY!! Those are the exact same rooms we had last time. It’s a sign!! A sign from the Disney Gods that we are supposed to take this trip! I call Chuck at work and he agrees. We put a deposit on our credit card and we are officially booked on the Disney Magic Western January 24-31st!!

Up Next…preparations and travel day.

You have a great sense of humor. Comparing childbirth to cruising is pretty funny. I certainly hope your husband remebered his dramamine this time, the run from Key West to Grand Cayman was interesting to say the least. Lookiing forward to reading more.:thumbsup2

I'm so excited to read another Incredibles trip report. :) Just don't take as long as last time to finish. ;)

I went on a Western cruise 1 year ago, so I'm excited to relive it!

Preparations

Of course I join the cruise meet thread soon after the deposit is processed. It’s a smaller group and everyone is very friendly. Steph finds two email friends in Deanna and Katelyn and checks her email account 4 times a day. Life is busy in this house with sports and school and time travels quickly. We realize how much our family will be missing while we’re away for 8 days…the football awards banquet, Little League sign-ups (I work the table for softball), 2 batting practices, 1 fielding practice, an indoor football playoff game, 2 basketball games (Chuck’s the coach), a mom’s night out, not to mention 6 whole days of school. Oh well…life goes on without the Incredibles.

I join the fish extender exchange on the meet thread after trying to avoid it for a few weeks. Who am I kidding? Of course I’m going to join the exchange! Christmas comes and goes with all its fanfare and right after New Year’s, it hits. Holy crap, we’re going on a cruise this month! I look to ebay for my fish extender b/c I can’t sew to save my life. I email Tiffany (gradysmommy) on ebay to see if there’s enough time to make one and she says it’s no problem. I poll the members of my family (with Steph the only one knowing what a FE even is) and email Tiffany with their requests. A short time later, the most beautiful FE shows up in my mailbox. This is the only picture I have, you can’t really see all the detail (plus I kind of erased our last name, it really doesn't have little white boxes on it!). Chuck has a captain’s hat, I have a Minnie bow, Steph has a princess crown, Tommy has a camo Mickey and Kevin has a pirate bandanna:

Two things happen in the weeks before the cruise that probably were not necessary to my life. The first is that I joined Facebook. All of a sudden, people I haven’t spoken to in 20 years are popping up out of nowhere. I’m connecting with high school and college friends, flinging food and poking people while Marie is asking me every day if I’ve packed yet. That would be a “no.” The second and more damaging thing is I started reading the Twilight series. I was completely consumed…I’m talking no sleep, dishes piling up, no food in the house and certainly NO PACKING. I made myself stop after Eclipse (that would be 3 books). I was not going to start Breaking Dawn until after I was packed and ready for vacation.

Let’s face it, I’m just a last-minute packer. I don’t understand how people pack so far in advance…don’t you need the clothes you’re packing? I realize we’re wearing winter stuff now but my kids wear shorts and t-shirts to practice and I guess we just don’t keep as big a supply of underwear as everyone else.

Anyway, the days before the cruise are devoted to laundry and organizing (and OK, a chapter or two of Breaking Dawn, shhh). I actually have most of the stuff in the suitcases by Wednesday night. Thursday comes and I methodically work throughout the day. I pack more stuff, finish stuffing and tagging my FE gift bags, get them in a suitcase, pull the shoes out of my over-the-door-shoe-holder so I can pack it. After we get the kids in bed the night before the flight, there is still lots to be done. I print out all our ressies and paperwork and realize that I never changed the pick up time on the rental car.

You see, I booked our flights on Southwest. As any obsessively frugal vacation planner will tell you, Southwest changes their prices almost on a daily basis. I changed our flights 4 times in 3 months and managed to save $460 toward another flight (Vegas, baby?). But in the meantime, I forgot to change the rental car reservation. So now it’s 12:30 a.m. and I’m on the Budget website changing our rental car pickup from 5 pm to 11 am. Luckily there is availability and no price difference. I also re-register for Budget fastbreak b/c I can’t find the card anywhere. Finally I’m finished for the night and I try to sleep.

Travel Day

The alarm goes off at 4:30 am giving me a total of 3 hours of sleep. Chuck and I get ready and leave the kids sleeping. We weigh each suitcase on the bathroom scale. One registers 49.5 lbs. so I switch some toiletry Ziplocs into the lighter suitcases. All bags are now well under the 50 lb. weight limit. Chuck loads them into the minivan. For those keeping track at home, we have 3 big suitcases, a small suitcase, a large rolling duffle bag, a garment bag, a backpack, a zippered beach bag and a computer bag. I didn’t think it was humanly possible to pack more than our last cruise. It is.

Tommy wakes up at 6 and he helps me wake up the other two. They get dressed and we are out the door at 6:12 am. I kid you not. We pick up my FIL and head to MacArthur airport. Marie and Kristen are flying Jetblue but that’s out of Kennedy and no amount of TV’s is worth the hassle of driving to Kennedy. We pull up to the curb and the place is deserted. The curbside check in has no line. We unload our bags, throw our winter coats in the car and walk right up to the baggage check. I hand the man my “A” boarding passes (secured promptly at 8:10 am the previous morning) and we wave goodbye to FIL and go inside where it’s warm. We walk straight through security with no line and Steph and I head to the food area where we order breakfast with no line. There is seriously nobody here!

I buy 4 egg sandwiches and a bagel. The man informs me that each container of cream cheese is 50 cents. I stand there thinking this through. I want 3. Yes, $1.50 worth of tiny packets of cream cheese. I do a quick cost-benefit analysis in my head. Normally I would never spend $1.50 for 3 tiny packets of cream cheese. But soon I will be locked in an airplane with Kevin. Kevin who is always hungry. Kevin who must eat this bagel so I don’t have to listen to him whine that he’s hungry while I’m locked in an airplane with him. I decide to buy 3 packets of cream cheese.

We bag up the breakfast to eat on the plane. We wait at the gate and Kevin is bouncing off the walls. He can’t sit still, climbing on the chairs, running around the open areas and generally being a nuisance to his siblings. He calms down a bit when a boy his age starts checking him out. The kid comes over and comments on Kevin’s Mario shirt. He wants to know what DS game Tommy is playing. The boy’s family comes over and we chat with them. They’re going to Disney World and we’re not the least bit jealous. This boy is so funny, he keeps trying to tell Kevin he’s in 1st grade. But he doesn’t say his “R’s” correctly so Kevin doesn’t understand him. He asks Kevin what grade he’s in and Kevin says 1st grade but he doesn’t say his “R’s” correctly either. So they’re both saying the same thing with the other one going “what?” “what?” over and over. It’s a speech therapist's nightmare (or dream I guess).

They establish that they’re both 6, both in 1st grade, both have black DS’s, both have the same Mario game and I add “and you’re both going to sit in the back of the plane together.” Luckily the kid knows I’m kidding but his mom is cracking up and I can see she’s considering the possibility.

They finally call the “A’s” to line up for boarding. We wind up in row 9. Chuck and the boys are sitting in one row and Steph and I are across from them with an aisle and a window. I’m careful not to make eye contact with the passengers filing through the plane for fear that they’ll want our empty middle seat. The plane is not full and we get the row to ourselves!

I read the Newsday we grabbed from our mailbox and the kids do some homework. We wait for the drinks to eat our breakfast. The flight attendant forgets my drink and never gets around to bringing it. Luckily my husband shares. After breakfast, I break out Breaking Dawn. I spend most of the flight reading it and the flight attendant comes over to see which book I’m reading. She tells me she finished all of them and the lady in front of me says she has too. I try to ignore them while they talk about the series. The boys play their DS’s and Steph listens to her ipod. Before we know it, it’s time for landing. We make it to the gate and the seat belt sign dings off, and I’m actually disappointed that I have to stop reading.

Everyone stands and the lady in front of me turns right around to talk vampires with me. I politely tell her I’m a few chapters in to Breaking Dawn. Then she says, “oh wait till you get to the part where Bella __________”. I yell, “ahhhh, I haven’t gotten up to that part yet!” Hello!!! She freakin’ told me what was gonna happen! I mean I kind of knew what was going to happen anyway but I didn’t need her to spell it out for me, sheesh!! (That’s why I left that sentence blank above. I won’t do that to you, my readers). Chuck shakes his head and deflects the conversation by confirming that we have 6 checked bags to pick up. The lady looks at me like I’m crazy and I say, “we’re going on a cruise.” Like this is an excuse! When she realizes the two boys are also mine, she stops giving me the crazy look.

We finally get off the plane, away from spoiler-lady and head straight to the bathroom. Chuck goes with Kevin. He’s still in that in-between stage where he can hit the men’s or ladies room. Steph and I wait a long time outside which can only mean one thing. I’m glad Kevin chose the men’s room! We finally make our way to the baggage area with Tommy and Kevin being thrilled to ride the escalator (my kids don’t get out much).

The luggage is already circulating and Chuck is very calm about this. I think we’ve cured him of his get-to-baggage-before-the-buzzer syndrome. We get all 6 bags very quickly. We don’t see any porters so I swipe my credit card for two luggage carts at $4 each. We walk over to Budget.

There’s a very nice lady at the Budget kiosk who notices that the fastbreak is in Chuck’s name but the ressie is in mine. Oops. I apologize and she quickly changes the ressie into his name. I had reserved an SUV but she asks me if we want a minivan. I guess she took pity seeing the 2 carts of luggage. She says it’s the same price…don’t have to twist my arm, of course we’ll take a minivan.

We get the luggage in and we still have to lower half a seat in the back of the van. I’m just grateful I don’t have a suitcase on my lap. We make the drive to Port Canaveral, not realizing the minivan has satellite radio until we’re 5 minutes away. Oh well. Surprisingly enough, Kevin does not complain that he’s hungry. $1.50 spent on cream cheese? Well worth it! We pull in to the parking lot for Country Inn and Suites and we are officially on vacation!

Next up… Anatomy versus bathing suit. Yup, we’re keeping it real!

Great trip report so far! I loved your FE too when I went around and did all the gifts! I hope you don't mind but I took a photo of your FE extender because I thought it was so cute. This person walked by when I did it and asked why I was taking a photo of a door. It was pretty funny! Anyway, I am glad you guys had a great trip and I look forward to reading more if it! Isn't it a bummer to be back home again? I can't wait to be back out in the Caribbean!

:lmao: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: OMG!!!! Linda - this is so flipping hillarious because the EXACT same thing is happening to me and I have 68 days to go! I am so addicted to the crackbook and I had to actually put down Eclipse last night so I would pause a little and just hold off waiting so I could be at Breaking Dawn for the cruise! So glad to know its actually possible to get packed and wait for the books for the cruise - unless you have a great deal more moral fortitude than I... which is entirely possible :guilty:

All right,

1) I will get into this Twilight thing now. I need something to obsess over anyway!

2) What is up with escalators??? The first time we visited the Seas pavilion in Epcot, all DD wanted to do was ride that escalator up and down while we were trying to get her over to Soarin'. I guess my kid doesn't get out much, either!!!

looking forward to the next instalment!

Escalators are exciting. Not a single one in our town. LOL. Enjoying the TR - write faster :rotfl2: pirate:

Hey look! It's Kevin!:lmao:

I'm addicted to DISboards, I don't need to add facebook to the mix.
I just bought Twightlight. I haven't started it yet.

ya know what's crazy? i can actually hear your voice reading your report- too funny.

Just don't take as long as last time to finish. ;)

I promise NOTHING!

Don't mind at all. In fact I took a picture of each and every door on the FE exchange!

Cyndi...you might be on to something. Maybe my next vacation will be in podcast!! Thanks to all for reading so far.

Probably for the best anyways, since I actually want to talk to my husband during our vacation

1/23 Travel Day, cont. Anatomy vs. Bathing Suit.

We all walk in to the Country Inn & Suites around noon. A very nice lady at the desk checks us in and asks if we have a preference on a room location. I can’t think of a reason we would care so I ask Chuck if he has a preference. At first he says no but then quickly changes his mind and asks the lady if she has a room with a view of the port. Ahhhh, good idea…there’s a reason why I keep him around! She says she can put us in a room on the 4th floor where we can see the ships. We make our way to said room and the view doesn’t disappoint. There’s a Royal Caribbean or some sort of “other” ship there. Not the Magic but better than looking at a parking lot or trees or something.

We leave the kids in the room with instructions not to kill each other and Chuck and I go out for the luggage. He grabs a luggage cart and I know what’s coming. Ever since the Suite Life of Zach and Cody, Steph is obsessed with riding on luggage carts. This has been going on for years so at least I’m prepared for it. We load up the cart and haul it to the 4th floor. I’m still carrying a bag or two since it doesn’t all fit.

A little blurry but you get the idea:

DSC04115-1.jpg

As we open the door, we hear the scream. That would be the scream of our 11 year old daughter when she realizes we have a luggage cart. Chuck tells her to get out of the way so he can get the luggage in the room. I’m not kidding when I say obsessed. Once all bags are in the room, we take the obligatory luggage cart picture:

DSC04119-1.jpg

Chuck gives the kids a few rides down the hall. The boys get bored with it quickly but Steph takes the ride all the way down to the lobby to return the cart.

We get settled in the room, meaning both adults lay down on the bed. It takes all of two minutes before we hear “I’m hungry.” Guess who? If you didn’t guess Kevin, then you haven’t been paying attention! It’s about 12:40 now and I start to think through the rest of the day. We planned on having dinner at Grills but I remember reading it’s better to get there early. There’s no way we can eat lunch and then be ready to eat an early dinner. I suggest to Chuck that we hit Grills for lunch and then we can pick up some dinner in the room whenever we get hungry again. He’s unsure…he’s still not over the fact that we didn’t have a good dinner the last time we were here. [See previous trip report for the fight on travel day…we’re doing MUCH better today!] I convince him that it’s the same menu, everyone’s hungry now and it will be much less crowded. He agrees so it’s off to Grills. We stop at the lobby to get directions to the place. Nice lobby lady hands us a cartoon-like map and draws our path. Very easy.

We park across the street in a parking lot that holds about 6 cars. We get the last spot. I’m not sure where we would have parked if this tiny parking lot was full. The place is crowded but there’s no wait. We get seated at a table inside on the lower level, not next to the window but we can still see outside. We all like this place immediately. We get NE clam chowder to start, which is very good. Chuck and I finish the soup the kids leave over…yum! The boys get chicken fingers (what else?), Steph, who is in that transition between kids menus and adult menus, gets a chicken sandwich from the adult menu. Chuck gets coconut shrimp and I get the shrimp scampi. There is a moment of panic when the chicken fingers come with potato chips instead of French fries. Who is panicking? If you didn’t guess Kevin then you haven’t been paying attention! Chuck shares his fries with Kevin and all is right in the world again.

My shrimp scampi is delicious. I’m not a huge vegetable lover but the zucchini is outstanding. Grills is definitely our kind of restaurant. Nothing really fancy but great food, good service, flat screen TVs and a view of the water. What else do you need?

We roll out of Grills (a theme to be repeated for the next 7 days) and head over to Publix for beach toys. This is where Chuck got them last time. Publix doesn’t disappoint, they have a huge display of beach stuff right when you walk in the door. I call Marie to ask if she wants anything. They are staying the night at Caribbean Beach at WDW. We get 2 pails for them and one for us along with extra shovels. We pick up a pair of sunglasses for Kevin and a pair for me since Chuck forgot his and is wearing mine. I don’t love mine so I happily give them up for a new pair.

After Publix, we drive around a bit and park at the beach. It’s pretty cold today and there aren’t any cars parked at the beach. We find a meter with some time on it and walk out on to the sand. It’s completely freezing on the beach so we quickly turn around and head back to the car and the hotel.

I’m exhausted. The 3 hours of sleep has caught up with me. I lay down on the bed and I’m not going to move. The kids want to check out the pool so Chuck finds their bathing suits and they head to the pool at around 3:00. I must have fallen asleep b/c I jump when I hear the door open in what seems like a second or two. It’s Steph and she wants to know where the goggles are. I offer a few suggestions as to where they may be. Thankfully she finds them and leaves. I peek at the clock and see that it’s already 3:30. I definitely fell asleep! I’m still groggy when the door opens again at 4:30. Swimming over, nap over.

I’m trying to wake myself up but it’s not happening too easily. I still can’t wake up when I hear Kevin wail in pain. He’s screaming and crying, Chuck is with him in the bathroom and my brain is registering that I need to get up. I open my eyes to see Chuck coming out of the bathroom with the most peculiar look on his face. It’s a look of dismay, humor and sympathy all rolled into one. Kevin is still crying in the bathroom. I mumble, “what’s going on?” I was not prepared for the answer.

I will my body to move. I feel like I’m hung over. I go in the bathroom to see for myself. I was not prepared for the sight.

Poor Kevin is sitting on the toilet seat with a certain part of his anatomy stuck through the tiny holes of his bathing suit liner!! OK, now I’m awake! I tug on it a little and he screams in agony. Holy crap! How the heck did this happen?! I know it’s a new bathing suit and I vaguely remember Tommy having this problem once but I recall him yanking his goods right out of the lining! Kevin is not yanking any goods anywhere!

I try to wet the “area” in the bathtub but it doesn’t help. Chuck and I stand there in the bathroom for a moment…looking at our son’s predicament, looking at each other, wondering how to proceed. Chuck decides to take him back to the pool to see if he can loosen it up under the water. OK, sounds like a plan!

They come back minutes later, mission unsuccessful. Chuck laments that there were too many people in the pool and he couldn’t exactly have his hands down Kevin’s bathing suit with Kevin screaming. OK, good point!

I decide we need scissors. I say this out loud. Kevin hears the word scissors and lets out a fresh scream. Oh, for the love of God…WE’RE GONNA CUT THE BATHING SUIT!!! I’m about to go down to the lobby to borrow a pair when Chuck finds the nail clippers in his bag. That might work. I try to cut some of the lining but I can’t operate under the pressure. Chuck takes over…snip, snip and the boy is free!! Kevin nonchalantly says, “that’s better” and runs into the other room to see what Tommy’s watching on TV.

I know I’ve said this before but you just can’t make this stuff up!!!

We hang out in the room for a while, the kids watch TV and Chuck falls asleep. We watch as the Royal Caribbean ship moves out to sea. That gets everyone excited for what’s to come tomorrow. I break out the computer to satisfy my facebook addiction and write some TR notes. Sooner than you could imagine, the call comes from the other room…"I’m hungry." Guess who?

I wait a little while until someone else tells me they’re hungry and then I wake Chuck to ask what he wants. He mentions the Pizza Hut near Publix so Steph and I head out to pick up dinner. We order some pizza and drive over to Publix to get drinks. While I’m in there, I can’t resist getting a box of Entenmann’s chocolate donuts. I’m on vacation you know!! We make it back and enjoy our dinner in the living room area of the hotel room.

We get the kids ready for bed and try to find clothes for them to wear tomorrow. I was not able to get any cute matching t-shirts for embarkation this time. Disneyshopping.com didn’t have anything I liked and I was not paying for the custom shirts nor did I have the energy to make my own. We’ll live without them this trip. But trying to find PJ’s, trying to find clothes, trying to find toothbrushes…I realize how completely disorganized we are. In an effort to pack everyone’s stuff in different bags, I realize that I can’t find anything. Here’s a little cruise tip…pack a separate bag with everything you need for the night before and embarkation day so you’re not rummaging through 5 suitcases trying to find toothpaste. I know it sound like common sense but I’ve made this trip twice now and haven’t done it that way either time. I guess I don’t have much common sense.

The other thing I must find is the Bonine. I must find it and Chuck must take it. Got to get those good drugs running through his system. Good good Bonine.

We finally find everything and decide who’s sleeping where. The kids need the light off to fall asleep so I head to the bathroom with my book. This is not something you do before kids. This is not something you even contemplate before you have kids. But I have put my time in reading on hotel toilet lids!!

I wait enough time for them to fall asleep and then climb into bed and turn on a light. Ahh, this is more comfortable. I read more about Bella, Edward and Jacob until I decide that I should try to sleep. I lay in bed for a while thinking about tomorrow…tomorrow on the Disney Magic!!

Next up…embarkation day and Bonine, good good Bonine!!

as usual your report does not disappoint! What would you do without Kevin- he's the life of the party (or the TR anyway)

OMGosh!
I love your TR!! I'm subscribed and hooked!

I totally relate to you and the Twilight books! When I started reading them, I swear, the world STOPPED until I was done reading the last one! :rotfl:

We loved your FE so much...it was SO pretty. The girls kept commenting on it..."that's the lady with the pretty fish extender".

If you don't remember me, I'm the one who jumped you in the hall to ask if you knew when the DIS meet was:) We were just down the hall from you with the lame, homemade FE.

I think I have fish extender envy:)

Great report so far--can't wait for the next installment!
