The I-65 vs I-75 debate once again

...three lanes down to two to one. It would have been fine, BUT the merge was a good 5 miles up ahead and two trucks took it upon themsleves to block the lanes. No one could get around and that just screwed up traffic further. We managed to jump on the shoulder for just a second and saw that there were NO cars in one of the lanes in front of the truck. Just the truck creating its own merge. I really wish it had one of those call this # to report how I'm driving. I would have instantly!

Any questions - ask away!

My question: How did the two trucks reduce the throughput (number of vehicles per hour) passing the (one-laned) point of the construction zone itself? No screw up can possibly occur without such a reduction.

If you feel that a Ph.D. in transportation engineering is needed to answer this question, please say so!

Common speed trap: As you leave the center of town the road gets a little wider and driveways and intersections are fewer and farther between and buildings are further back from the road. But a speed limit sign indicating a higher speed has not appeared yet.

TyRy...Good to hear your driving went smoothly (except for the backup).

Seashore...often if there are lane merges up ahead, the semi's will drive the middle of the open lanes so they in effect block both lanes, or buddy-up by driving side by side to slow traffic in both lanes. They do this to prevent cars from speeding up and then merging in at the last possible moment which is not only dangerous, but rather selfish and rude. I don't have issues with semi's doing this within a mile or so of the merge into one lane, and actually appreciate the gesture, but if they were doing it five miles prior to the lane merger, then that would be a frustration.

Bumping this thread for us northerners who are heading down soon and have to avoid Atlanta because of the bridge collapse/road troubles.
