The Heat

So after awhile of thinking about the program I am already second guessing myself. I am from WI and absolutely hate the heat and sun. I applied for the program and was accepted for the summer start in May. I already know that being a photopass photographer means a lot of standing around outside.

Coming from the bitter cold state of WI I grew up spending my time outside during the winter and usually hiding inside the A/C during the Summer. Anything above 80F is usually uncomfortable to me and I have passed out various times due to heat exhaustion. Not to mention, I have very sensitive skin so sun poisoning and bad burns (even with multiple 100SPF applications) are common.

OK, so enough of my rambling, I was wondering....how hot is it really down there in Florida? I'm sure that at some point I will get used to it, but a whole 9 months just seems a bit unbearable. I would LOVE to do this program and I have wanted to do this for a long time, but the only thing holding me back is the heat and the sun. I know it is too late to change my role but should I consider waiting to do the later program?

Would Jan-Aug be better then May-Dec? I feel like the summer would be more bearable after becoming used to the climate rather then heading right down in May.

Thanks!

unfortunately, I think that no matter what time you go it is going to unbelievably hot. I was there August-January and even on christmas eve i was wearing summer clothes. Since you have a medical reason, you could always tell them you need to work inside or you could request a role change. One of my friends had a similar problem with the sun, was assigned to outdoor foods and was then transferred to a resort with me. You never know :)

Also, keep in mind that Florida is very humid at about 50% and higher during the Summer months due to the heat. In terms of temperature, this week is in the 60s-70s-80s not counting the humidity (which makes it warmer). The average for Summer right now is in the 90's, with Spring being a tad bit cooler in the 70s-80s.

If the heat is a concern, I would definitely suggest the consideration of a role change. You never know! ;)

Have a Magical Day! :smickey:

It's only during the summer that it's crazy hot. It was actually really cold in the winter I was there but that's probably not common haha. but the spring and fall it's really nice. and maybe I'm just weird but the only time the heat got to me was when I was first there and training. I was custodial so I was outside too and it was really hot (August). but then on my last day I think it was about 96 and it didn't really bother me.

I, for one, was absolutely freezing today. Only 60 degrees!? Yeesh, I can't handle cold weather though. If it's less than about 75 out I'm cold.

Fortunately for you, there are Photopass positions that are indoors (taking photos of people with certain characters for example). They may put you more in those roles. And as someone else said, you may be eligible for a role transfer if there's a medical reason.

Good luck! And congrats on the acceptance!

Just so you know, you will have to have a doctor's note for Disney to officially recognize the sun poisoning/burn thing so you can request inside locations. I'm in the same boat, and I also get migraines from the sunlight here, and they won't do anything without a doctor's note.

Yeah, right now I would just suggest everything else that has been said-role change, indoor request, etc. I live in New Orleans and it's pretty similar weather down here- the heat isn't so bad, it's the humidity that gets to me. You just can't be afraid to sweat. I am a dancer/color guard member and we have Band Camp in the middle of August during the day outside, and breakfast really helps tremendously. If you do stick with your role, try to have some water handy, maybe? And never go to work without eating some toast and peanut butter or something. It takes some adjusting to, but I think your body could get used to it. Good luck!

A lot of people go through this. The best advice is to drink so much water you're asking for a bathroom break every hour, which they can't say no too. The company will supply you with a water bottle and holder so never leave home without it, in the summer I go through about a bottle an hour.

If you start by applying sunscreen your skin will eventually tan and get used to it. Or continue to burn and then you'll need to continue to apply sunscreen, or start to wear long sleeve shirts.

Funny thing about sunscreen...I hardly wore it my first program. I wore it when I went to the water parks but that was it. I didn't burn either *shrugs* my skin doesn't burn easily unless my shoulders are exposed, which they hardly ever were down there. I didn't even get super tan either, and I worked outside! I'm just strange I think ha ha.

But!!! Don't be like me and hope you won't burn! It's better to be safe than sorry!

Weather is unbearably hot and i was only there until May. Id walk out of my air conditioned apartment to my car and in literally 20 seconds id be dripping with sweat.

I love the warm weather and sun though lol. I'm from NY so i get where you're coming from, I hate stuffy heat. I'd have the air on full blast at 60 degrees in the apartment at night, and my roommates from the south would get all mad about it haha.
