The Hat Has Left The Building

While I've never found the hat all that moving, I also have zero affinity for the theater. It's not exactly a Disney icon...

That's because it's not a Disney icon. Nor was it ever meant to be.

There is a very similar water tower at the Disney Studios lot in Burbank CA still in use today.

Earful Tower was the park Icon long before the Ugly Blue Funnel ever showed up. Thankfully, it is gone.

Well, I am in shock... We just returned on 12/11 from our first cruise ever on the Disney Dream, it was amazing !!!
But I noticed in the MCO airport, a woman with an exact replica of my old WDW shirt that had the 4 icons from each park on them, the AK tree, the Epcot ball, the Magic Kingdom castle, & the Hollywood Studios Sorcerer hat....

Except... the new shirt did not have the Sorcerer hat, but instead had the Tower of Terror building on it for the icon representing the DHS park....

I even have a beautiful Christmas ornament with the hat, castle, Epcot ball, & AK tree --- representing all 4 parks...

I have been reading all the Disboards Cruise Line forums & not checking in on the Disney parks forums........

I am very sad that the hat is gone...
I thought it was very beautiful at night & I have MANY memories of my son being photographed in front of it since he was in first grade (he is now 20).....
He was also shocked & saddened to see it removed.....

Why was it removed?

The powers that be decided it was time-simple as that.

It was added in 2001, reportedly as a "temporary" addition. So it must have been quite new when your son was in first grade. Before that, the park icon was the Earffel tower (water tower with Mickey ears).

I like that it was taken away. More space in that area for special shows and parties.

Not to worry. Just wait a few years and you'll likely have your hat back. In a better location, this time.

No, actually the new icon for DHS is the Tower of Terror.

I think eventually that will be replaced by a Death Star, because nothing says Christmas like a Death Star!!

that is what i figure too....tower of terror isn't much better..lol...a giant pixar lamp?? big Avengers A??? I kinda like it being classically Disney themed? I would love a star wars land...but i like the idea of keeping mickey and etc in THERE

i don't get the HATE for the hat...but the water tower looked good too...i don't love the idea of it switching all the time..but it does make for great merchandise turnover

Is there anything more they can do with the Earful Tower to make it MORE of an icon? It will and always has been the icon for the park to me. Was the original.
As much as I love the ToT, it would not make much sense as an icon as it's too specific.

Maybe they could add some sort of projection on top of the Earful Tower that makes it's stand out at night time.

YES I KNOW IT IS AN OLD POST...
i love the idea of a projection! which can become, star wars-y for may the 4th, patriotic, xmas-y, etc....like the castle....

geez if only they let us run the whole darn park DIS WORLD...LOL
