Thanx, Maine-iac! DUH! Don't know why I never paid attention before. Looking at the map now, it looks like there's no smoking around the 70's buildings (except on the lake trail). I always request a 70's building just because that's where they put me the first time and now I'm just used to it (creature of habit). I'm wondering tho if maybe they put me there because of my allergy. Anyhoo, it's worked for me. Never had a problem at POP, but I've been at restaurants where just a good whiff of cig smoke can make me pretty sick. If anybody else has the same problem maybe the 70's buildings are the place to request...:confused3

MsStinkerBelle - Yup, we have fun in that cheesy Mickey Phone building too! :thumbsup2

I stayed in the Big Wheel building (10). I was on the backside and it was so convenient to Classic Hall and very quiet. It was preferred and I think worth the little extra $.

Hey all. I'm staying on Disney property for the first time this April. We picked POP based on some friends who have stayed there before, so I hope it's as good as you guys make it sound.

Anyway, just yesterday I was upgraded from standard to preferred, and I saved $300 to boot! So, my question is, I want to be close to the busses, but I would also love to be able to see the Epcot fireworks and be near the pools. What building should I request? Should I ask for a top floor to see the fireworks, or ask to be on the ground so I don't have to deal with the stairs or the extra walk to the elevator?

I really don't know, and would love to hear from you POP experts!

Thanks!
Jack

We are staying at POP from May 30th to June 8.   This is our second trip to the World. Our first trip back in June 2006 we stayed at POR and loved it. We chose POP because it was a value resort and we wanted to spend more time (10 days) versus (8 days) at a moderate resort. We cannot wait to get there. I will be writing a pre-trip report :surfweb: as well as a full report when we get back. We are expecting long lines and understand that we are going during a time in which we will have to be a little patient. But again, we cannot wait.:woohoo:

DD7 and I will be at Pop in 5 1/2 weeks :cool1: and we are so excited!! The last time I was at WDW was 12 years ago, and we stayed at the Treehouse Villas (anyone remember those)? It was a nice resort, but back then all it had was a pool and hot tub, nothing much to speak of, and no food court/clubhouse or anything like Disney resorts now. I understand this resort has been closed for a while now, but I read somewhere on the DIS boards that they are revamping them? :confused3

Anyway, this will be my DD's first time to WDW and we are both just over the moon about our upcoming trip!!:cloud9: I absolutely can't wait to see her face and watch her joy while there:lovestruc It will be just the two of us so it will be extra special!:goodvibes The last few years have been a bit rough on us, so we really need this trip! It's all we talk about and think about now!! I have already started packing small travel size toiletries!!

This thread has been so helpful to me. I have gotten so many good ideas and learned so much from all of you guys!! Thanks for that ::flower3: Now I will have to pay it forward after we get back. I think I have become a faithful DIser now!!!!

Dinka - Just wanted to say that I think you'll find POP a great place to stay for your first Disney trip with your DD. A few years ago, I started my addiction by bringing my DGD - just the 2 of us - and we've come back as often as possible ever since! I think the atmosphere is just really fun for kids this age. I keep asking my DGD - now almost 13 - if she wants to try another resort and she keeps saying...Maybe next time. :)

Do they have to take their whole party with them?

I am only going to comment on this question once because I don't want to get OT since this is the POP thread.

So, one person in the party has a wheelchair/ECV. They need to be boarded first, before the bus gets crowded for safety reasons(and can you imagine trying to do that task as a bus driver on a crowded bus?). They strap them in while the rest of their party waits in the line in your version of how it should work. They don't get on, have to wait for the next bus. Their family(and maybe the person in the ECV's caretaker) are separated. Not exactly a magical idea.

I really suggest you spend some time on the Disabilities board or even the transportation board to figure out how it all works. Since I've been on a trip with someone who needed extra assistance, let me tell you that it is a real pain in general- not a front of the line pass and often a longer wait on rides and buses if there are more than two people with special needs waiting, some of the lousiest viewing of some movies and shows- that I really think after the first day if someone was just lazy they'd cash it all in and just walk. It is definitely not easy, but I think it's really cool that WDW allows families to stay as a family while on vacation and get to have a great experience even though they face challenges. pixiedust:

Thanks Mousebit!:flower3: It sure does look like the perfect place for kids and I just know my DD and I will LOVE it! It's great to hear your DGD loves it so much! I feel like I already know Pop after reading this thread, and from seeing it in my dreams!!

.......Handicap vs. Lazy you decide for yourself. Please wait to see for yourself before you judge the comment. Handicapped individuals deserve all the special treatment they get, lazy people do not. I found it bothersome that a
person on a scooter would drive to the front of the line and take about ten people travel with them all the way to the front. First of all, why cant they wait in line and get the special treatment when it is their turn? Why do all of their party go to the front with them? And them see over half of them get off the scooter and walk on the bus pretty normally. Granted I had been carrying my daughters for about a half hour at least by this point but I still think I could see things pretty rationally........

Handicap vs. Lazy

If someone is using a ECV at Disney just because they are lazy I think they would find out after the first day the EVC's are very inconvenient especially at Disney.
Those of us using an EVC seem to become "invisible" since able bodied guests are crossing in front of us, stopping in front of us and never seem to see us until it is time for us to load onto a bus. When we are loading onto a bus that is when we become very visible.
It is very hard to drive an EVC in the crowds in the parks.
It is not easy backing up an EVC onto the bus lift and maneuvering the EVC into the tie down is very difficult. I highly doubt "lazy" people would submit themselves to that for long.
Also EVC rental is quite expensive. My EVC cost over $200 to rent for one week. Most "lazy"people would rather spend the money on other things.
The EVC's that are loaded onto the buses are either privately owned or are rented from an offsite company.
I doubt that "lazy" people would think ahead enough to preorder an EVC from an offsite company.

Sure there may be a few people who use EVC's because they are lazy but I am betting they learn quickly it not easy or fun to use an EVC at WDW.
I know I wish I did not need to use one but without an EVC WDW would be inaccessible to me.

-----------------------------------------------------

why cant they wait in line and get the special treatment when it is their turn?

WDW loads the WC and EVC at the back of the bus.
The driver needs to see that there is a WC or EVC that needs to board the bus therefore WDW asks that WC's and EVC's wait in a separate line near where the back door of the bus will be when the bus stops.

They can't wait in the stand by line for a couple of reasons.

1. The bus queues are not wide enough for a WC or EVC to make the turns
2. The bus driver needs to know a WC or EVC is waiting.
3. For the safety of others and to aide the bus driver WC and EVC guests are usually loaded first. An EVC needs room to manuver into the tie down space. Also the bus driver needs room to tie down the EVC/ WC. If the asiles are full of standing guests there will no room to get the EVC into the tie down space.

If there is a space for the WC or EVC who is waiting to board but no room for the guest
to get the WC/EVC into the space than WDW will be in violation of the ADA and could be open to a hefty lawsuit.

How do I attract the attention of the bus driver?
You need to be where the driver can see you so that he/she knows you want to board the bus. Some bus stops have a wheelchair/handicapped symbol that you can wait by. For "unmarked" bus stops, have your group out in the open (but off the roadway) near where the back door of the bus will be when it stops. At stops with buses going to multiple destinations from the same stop (like at the resorts), let the driver know whether you want the bus or not by nodding or shaking your head.
Can my whole party board with me?
If the bus has a lift, only the person with a wheelchair and one other member of your party may go on the lift.
As for the other members of your party, please be considerate of other guests who are waiting for the bus. In general, WDW considers a party of 6 (5 plus the person with a wheelchair/ECV) to be party. If there are few people waiting for the bus when you arrive with a party of that size or smaller, the bus driver may invite you to board at the back door after the wheelchair/ECV is loaded.
If your party is larger or you can see a long line of people waiting for the bus when you pull up, it's considerate have the other members wait in line for the bus or to wait for the next bus.
It will be much easier and less stress for everyone if you can avoid taking the buses at the busiest times (like right at park closing). Taking a leisurely stroll out of the park will usually help you avoid a long line at the bus stop.

If you get to the bus stop and see a long line, here are some considerate ways my family (SueM in MN) have used to handle it:
If you have a small party; keep track of the last person in line when you arrive in the area. Wait off to the side until you can see that party would get onto the next bus (you don't have to wait until they get to the door of the bus), then go to the wheelchair boarding area with your party .
If your party is larger, have the other members of your party get into line. When you can see that they would be able to get onto the next bus, then go to the wheelchair boarding area.

I read this on the disABILITIES and I think it explains how some of us with hidden disabilities feel.

I have a trip planned for August. I have been only a partial participant in many family trips and adventures due to stamina and distance issues.
Like you I feared what "others would think", my own expectations and self image as well as my families.

after visiting these boards and pondering it How exactly is my using a wheelchair or scooter bothering or taking away from anyone else??? How am I taking advantage? I still pay the same to get in, I still wait in the same lines, still need to get to fireworks early to find a spot..
maybe I don't know about some hidden "perks" of having a chair or scooter but as I understand thus far the only effect I will have is taking up a bit more space in line.
But I won't need that space on the park bench for 5 hours now so you may have a shady place to sit!!
If you can not participate in your family vacation without a chair, scooter or GAC then GET ONE!
These things are designed not as "extras" but to allow EVERYONE to experience the magic of disney.
It provides equal access and opportunity.
Wee! I am so excited my kids are laughing at me!

Just my 2 cents.

Well my next stop is the first page to refresh myself on all the new and old things...but a few questions. For those who faxed in their requests a few days earlier than your arrival, have they been honored? And exactly how do you word it? I made a request with my reservation and I want to fax it again to hopefully get what I want! :thumbsup2
and I decided this year NOT to pack as much. M yDH would be happy wearing the same clothes the whole 5 days. LOL! So anyways I am going to buy some powder detergent and just wash if needed and only pack about half of what I brought last year. When is the best time to do the laudry? I would liek to stay away from more crowded times if possible. And I'm sure it's on the first page, but if not, where are the yall located at again?

Just adding my 2 cents on the wheelchair/ECV issues I totally understand why they wait where they wait and have no problem other than I ,m anxious to get going, it would be impossible to load them on afull bus. I do have a problem when about 10 people come sauntering up to join them , when there is a long line already and they cut ahead . Of course someone should get on with the ECV but I don't feel a huge party should board with them . That is not fair to all those who have waited in line and I suspect that is more of an issue than the ECV and that causes ill feeling to all the party. I also take issue with those in line who sneak on while the driver is loading the ECV. which I saw more of than issues with large parties with ECV's in fact many of them did in fact just assist the ECV on and then get in line. I hope you all understand my point . It is the rest of the party with the ECV that can bother me not the person or their helper.

Hey, that's when we'll be there (our very first trip to the World)! I can't wait!!!

:dance3:
Me too!! May 4 to 10!:cool1:

You are going to have such a great time!!!

We go to WDW as a family of 5[DD(8), DS(7), DD(5)] once a year but that isn't enough for me so I take my kids 1 at a time too. Those one on one trips are very special. The May trip is my youngest DD's first one on one trip!

I took my DS to Pop in January for his 7th birthday. We've stayed at Poly, POFQ, POR, CR, ASMo but this was his first trip to Pop and he LOVED it!!!

May 5th - 9th for me, going solo for the 1st time :cool1:

I just booked with an AP discount!

I loved my solo trip last August. It was originally slated for POP but the dis Gods were working in my favor and gave me the CBR for the same price...so I stayed there for the long weekend. Amazing to just do what you want to do and relax....

Make a TR!!! It'd be great to hear Read it!

I have only been to WDW once in August 2007. We had chosen POP because it was a value resort and we really couldn't afford anything else and you know what I think no matter how much money we have we will always stay at POP, that is how much my family and I loved it. To answer your question jenseih regarding request by fax we had actually phoned the hotel about a week before and requested either the 50's or 60's area and we actually got we was requested even though I was told it was not guaranteed. Not only did we get the 50's area which was my first choice but we were in building 1, Lady, and on the first floor in a preferred room. So I think that it would be better to call in your request than fax it in.

POP rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got back from Pop a couple weeks ago. I faxed my preferences to them and they were honored. Good Luck!! You will love it!!!!!!!!!!

I believe there is a sample at allearsnet.com. Thats what I used last year for CBR, submitting my own preferences in, and we got our preferences honored! :)
