Before you read this, please make sure that your sense of humor is fully charged and ready to go! It doesn't get any better than this: yup, it's all about the lure.
Ok,
Have you ever taken one of those honesty tests as part of a job interview? It has questions like "if you received something in the mail that you didn't order, would you send it back?" Or, "you realize when you get home from shopping that you got $1.00 too much in change, would you drive back to the store to give it back?" If you answered yes to either, you failed the test! HA! Maybe Disney should give that test prior to letting people book with free dining. People are basically good, but if they can cheat/steal and know for certain they won't get caught, how many will? Think about it.
I have OCDPD (obsessive compulsive Disney planning disorder)! I would never want to cheat the mouse, or abuse the system. Since I just failed the test, I have to admit, I lied. Yes I have thought about creatively distributing my dining credits. I also love "what ifs" and I love making Excel spreadsheets, so I thought I would play with this dining credit thing. (Disney should make a new game...the Free Dining Game. The one who eats the most expensive food, fits the most meals in a day, and eats the most food without puking is crowned the winner.) If we were going to use all of our children's ts credits for us (but we are NOT), and pay oop for all of their meals, we would end up spending about $600 oop in order to take full advantage of this "plan." But who exactly would be laughing here, us or the mouse? Over a period of 6 days, we'd have to eat 12 ts meals in addition to the cs and snacks. We eat a lot, but dang, that would be a lot of food! If we decided to share cs to make our cs credits go further, we would spend some oop for drinks and such, thus adding to the bill. Maybe Disney has a hidden agenda? Soft drinks do have a huge markup afterall! But, really, do you think Disney is being so generous to give us this free dining? Nope, they aren't doing this for our benefit. Since I have not looked at Disney's financial statements, I can't say what their cash cow is (or is that cash mouse, or is it a hidden mickey, hidden cash mouse cow? Somebody stop me!).
I must stop to warn you that I have adult ADD, seriously I do, so if I'm losing you, sorry, you'll just have to keep up! My thoughts do bounce around though, so I sincerly apologize, I didn't know you guys still existed! I watch entirely too much television!
Well, not really, because I'm always lurking around this board! I guess because I'm a huge fan of hockey, college basketball, and football, those commercials are permanently etched in my brain. Whoa, way off topic! See what I mean? ADD. But it's my post, I can do what I want, right?
Forcing myself back to the topic:
Maybe Disney is losing money on the dining part of the free dining promotion, but is offering it as a loss leader. You know, like stores do for back to school: notebook paper for 19 cents. It's just a lure to get you in so you'll buy the rest of your stuff at full price. Call it a promotion, gimmick, hurricane season sale, end of season clearance, insert your own title. But this is fine because they fill hotels that normally would be less than full this time of year. Who here was not planning a trip this fall until free dining was offered? Me, me, count me in! Ok, that's $2100.00 that Disney is getting from me, that they would not have received. So they throw in some food, big deal, they are still getting a good chunk towards their fixed overhead.
Now what does this have to do with the pooled credit debate, and morals, and cheaters, and double bookers, and Spongebob? Beats me! Just lighten up and be thankful that you have the freedom to choose the free dining if you so desire. You, you're going to Disney with free dining, and you're gonna like it!
Maybe Disney changed the brochure in hopes that it would become more of an honor system. As I stated yesterday, or so it seems, people are basically good and the mere suggestion that something is dishonest makes some stiffen up. Is it possible that the credit shuffle isn't out of hand, but Disney execs were trying to stop it before it does? Maybe their financial analysts compared the adr's to the reservations and realized what was potentially going to happen. I would think that during a slow time of year which all of the sudden has restaurants booked solid would send up a red flag. Especially if the hotels aren't full. Does Disney have secret shoppers? Are some of you Disers moles? Who knows?
Or maybe it's a test. And if you dare do the slightest immoral, unthinkable, intolerable slight alteration of the "free" dining plan, then you will be sent straight to...... Universal Studios! Oh the humanity! Can you imagine being banned from Disney because you swiped an extra package of Sweet and Low?
Seriously, Disney has a well educated highly paid marketing team. They work with the well educated, highly paid accountants. They brainstorm, come up with a plan and offer big fat bonuses to the sales team. It's just like any other business; they do what they can to maximize their resources. When the free dining stops working, they will come up with something else for us to manipulate and argue about.
Hey there's a good one.....pretend that Disney is any business. How cool is it that a business can raise prices and their customers blame each other instead of the business itself, competition, gas, el nino?!? Can you imagine? You're at Wal-Mart,uh, make that Target... and you see that the price of(insert your favorite product) went up. Are you going to blame other customers in the store? Yeah, I'd like to see that! Hey, you there, because you didn't shop the right way, my tampons went up 49 cents. I'm sure that I would be politely informed what to do with said purchase! Oh, and how many of you have purchased something and if it went on sale, you returned it and bought again? Anyone? Some of you aren't telling the truth....you'll be banned from Target, and must shop at Wal-Mart. Target doesn't care how much they sell something for, they just want to sell it, because it cost more to store it!
Ok, so here's my advice:
If you aren't planning on cheating the system, stop worrying about those who are. Disney will get them one way or another. Since they are saving so much on food, they can drop $100 on a t-shirt.
If you are planning on cheating the system, please be sure to purchase your $100 t-shirt. Or that Stitch burp smell will follow you for life!
And one more point, because I know we all need a potty break: Restaurants allow for a certain amount of waste, as do other type industries. Shrinkage, allowance for doubtful accounts, whatever. It's already on their books. That doesn't mean go hogwild! Again, I'm just saying, the skimmers aren't going to bankrupt Disney. OOh, another point...I'm sure Disney does a certain amount of chartiable donations for tax write offs. Maybe the free dining is their tax write off for helping us unfortunate souls. Hey what if they renamed it....ok, I'll stop already!
For those who are still awake, thanks for letting me torture you. For those who lost their funny bone, I have on my flame retarded suit....fire at will!
If you still must complain/argue about something here's two topics:
1. Who Wants to be a Millionaire will be closing forever on Aug. 19, 2006.
2. Lights, Motor, Action will be closed 9/14-9/19...the exact dates of our trip!
Talk amongst yourselves.
