The Great Christmas Argument

Our house is a combination - we have white lights on the gutters and bushes outside, but the "figures" (Santa, Rudolph, toy soldier) are colored lights; they look pretty good against the white background.

Our tree is VERY multicolored - multi lights, plus M&M lights and new this year, Snoopy lights. My ornaments are an eclectic mix, mostly collected from vacations and handmade by myself and friends. Sure, it might not look "classy", but every ornament on my tree has a story behind it.

I prefer the white lights. :)

My Mom used to have this coordinated crystal and white light tree with little white doves. She just threw a garbage bag over it every year. We called it the garbage bag tree. I HATED it. It was so nice and coordinated. She would never hang up any ornaments we made because that would ruin the look. The house had little white lights and candles in every window. Guess whose job it was to run around and plug in all the candles, including the basement and attic? YUCK - boring.

We do colored lights and our tree looks like somebody's Kindergarten class threw up all over it. I have every ornament my kids have ever made, the kids decorate it, the ornaments are all clumped around the bottom and in themes - Jesus ornaments in one spot, Barbie in another, hot wheels Hallmark collectibles in another. It's a mess and I LOVE it. The kids have a blast decorating it. We have colored lights, a moravian star, just added some animated reindeer. Who wants classy at Christmas, not me.

<font face="Comic Sans MS"><font color=#006400>In the neighborhood, I like to see a variety of multi-colored, with white lights interspersed in there. For my own home, I like the multi-colored, small, twinkling lights. They look so purty.

Kallison - your tree sounds like my parents tree - they still have ornaments my sister and I made when we were very little!! The tree is full of precious memories!! They out white lights around the trunk of the tree and colored ones around the tree - the white lights in the middle really bring out the color of the other lights.

I love colored lights and I love white lights - it depends on the decorations and the theming!!

Blue lights the new round ones. I have those and a cedar wreath withe red bows around my door. I love it!!

I like both. We do our house and tree with multi colored because to us its fun, our house looks like a gingerbread house. I think some houses look silly with all white lights, but some look sooo beautiful. I don't want to call it classy because that sounds so stuck up, to me all white lights look peaceful. I especially like a tree I saw last night outside with all small white lights and a few red lights placed into the tree to look like holly berries. To each his own I say...I think they're all beautiful and my kids and I always go out once a year in the car to look for pretty lights on peoples homes.

I have white lights on the outside and on the tree in the living room. I have 2 Charley Brown trees in the great room with the large multi-colored lights.

I actually switch back and forth. We bought a fiber optic tree this year and it is multi colored.

We always have a multi-colored tree but I think I will be getting all white lights for outside the house.

Whichever ones actually light up when you plug them in!!

Isn't that the truth! LOL!

Regarding my earlier comments about white lights being "classy", I hope that wasn't misconstrued to mean that I thought multi-color is "tacky". If I did imply that, I apologize.

The east side of our house, where the deck is, has all white lights decorating the railing and a couple bushes. The west side of the house has multi-colored lights on two bushes, and around the light pole. Our tree has multi-colored lights, 1200 of 'em all wrapped around the branches (takes awhile to do, but makes the tree so pretty with lights going all the way inside), and I have two small table-top trees with all white lights. I like the idea of candles in all the windows, but am just too lazy to do that.
