DD is a 5th grader and she has read it off and on. I don't think she was scared of it, I just think she wasn't all that interested. Should be fine for an average 10/11yo.

No kids here, but it's not that scary...certainly not compared to Coraline, for example.

I just read it awhile ago--I really liked it. You know your child best. I'd suggest reading it first and you can see what you think. I don't think it's any worse than any of Roald Dahl's books. It wouldn't have bothered dd when she was that age.

I think my dd would be bothered by the violence factor, the man murdering the family, and potentially trying to murder the baby boy.
its a girls book club choice my dd participates in, I am thinking we might just skip this one. one of the older girls picked it.
btw, she has read all the roald dahl books and liked them.
right now she is engrossed in the Warriors by Erin Hunt, she is going thru all the series and loves these books.

It's probably one of Neil's least scary/inappropriate novels. I would let either my 9th grader or 5th grader read it.

agreed. I loved it, but then again I'm 29 and a HUGE fan Neil Gaiman anyway....but I do think it should be appropriate for most 5th graders. Nothing too scary.

Ah, another Gaiman fan. I would, literally, read something that man scribbled on a cocktail napkin. He is a freakin creative genius.

I read this book last summer. It was more odd than scary. As a fifth grade teacher, I wouldn't anticipate any issues with this book and have, in fact, recommended it to my students. However, you know your child. If you have a child who is overly sensitive to topics related to death, you might want to read it first or with him.
