Well, here goes, my first TR ever as a Disboarder! Trip dates were May 31 to June 9.

I’ll set the stage:

The characters: DW, DD, DS, and myself … my DM … my MIL, SIL, DBIL and future wife, and SIL’s son.

The setting: CBR preferred room. Had a garden view, but 30 second walk from OPR…very convenient!

Prologue: 4 days prior to leaving I was lucky enough to completely throw my back out (unable to put on socks/shoes, bend past 15 degrees forward, walking made me look like an S to keep the pressure off of my 2 ruptured discs.). Friday before we left I received a cortisone injection to my back and had muscle relaxers and a steroid pack for the trip.

Off from NOLA with little incident. Plane ride was DD and DS’s 1st ever…went thru w/ flying colors. DS slept thru the flight, and DD watched DW’s movies on the iPOD Touch! Nephew screamed the whole hour and forty minutes in the air…OMG!!!

Checked in at CBR to 3 connecting rooms in building 26 (Martinique). At this point, DW’s ext. family begins complaining of dire hunger since none of them bothered to eat before the flight or during the flight…at the this point I knew the wheels were already falling off for this “family” vacation! My family settled in and unpacked and watched the Top 7 show on Disney TV…can’t help but do it every time we check in! Then settled in for our first night’s rest.
Notes on checking in at CBR: Staff was friendly, rooms were very clean/well maintained and was a pleasant experience. Disappointing that main pool was under construction at this time of year…IMHO those logistics should have been considered, everyone loves a good pool in the summer!

I hobble with DS in stroller to OPR for breakfast. First experience with DDP, more on that later. We shared a small offering of oatmeal and then back to get ready for Epcot. Sure enough, the party of 10 thing is already off to a bang, no one’s near ready from the other party, and they’re bickering about this very issue rather than just getting ready, can I leave now?

Finally get to Epcot, first park of the trip. 5 minutes in I’m standing next to Spaceship Earth, when a bird decides I look exactly like a toilet…that’s right…I got pooped on (twice) in the first 5 minutes in the park. Being the trooper I am, just cleaned it off and went about my day. New Spaceship Earth, well, like the new scenes, narration, and enhancements to the old scenes. The descent is rather uneventful, the video was cute with the touch screen, but I did miss the old scenes taken out. We then continue on, I’m hobbling so bad, the party is unable to go full speed because of me, plus I’m unable to help DW with our kids…which I wanted to do, truly, so I was in tons of misery. We go thru MouseGears, then the F&G showcase in the old WoL building, those ramps were torture! UoE was relaxing as usual, then the party did TT…I hung out in the shop with half the folks on kiddie patrol. Then The Seas, the Imagineers really did a great job with the undersea clam ride…great effects and my kids loved it! No time for Turtle Talk today, had to get all the way to BC for Cape May Café. Let me just say, if you have the opportunity to walk crooked from 2 ruptured discs from The Seas to the BC, pass on that…it’s really not as much fun as you would think. CMC was a good starter for our table-service meals, good food, good service, not digging the automatic 18% gratuity for large parties…and we have that the rest of the trip—UGH! Back to the room after walking back to the front of Epcot…needless to say I’m REALLY hurting by this time!!!

(I begin my regiment of the steroid pack…only hitch is that I didn’t read the directions and took all 6 pills at one time…oops!!! I was supposed to spread them out across the day—whoops!)

Wake up and take about 45 minutes to actually get out of bed…which was agonizing because I really had to potty! When finally got going, pain was about at an 8 on a scale of 1-10, not a promising sign. We were up for Hollywood & Vine for lunch, so off to MGM, uh, HS. About 2 minutes in the parks, my DM convinces me to at least get a wheelchair so I didn’t have to walk…well my pride allowed me to give in, only problem I couldn’t get comfortable in the wheelchair…so I rented an ECV scooter. So at least I’m able to putt-putt around instead of hobble. On the day we did GMR, WD:OMD, TSM, LMA (that show is awesome…humbles the I J show IMO), VoLM, and Playhouse Disney for the kiddies. I passed on TSM (the ride looked really jerky when it cornered) and RRC and ToT for obvious reasons. H&V was just okay for me. Nothing offered blew me away, however my kids loved the characters, but nephew screamed murder every time one came around—UGH! What made that even more unfortunate was that his mother kept forcing him at the characters—there’s a story there, but not appropriate for these boards!

Really hurting today, I sneezed (which set me back) and then became really cold overnight and tensed up (which set me back further)!!! So DW insisted I stay in the room to rest my back because we had La Nouba tix for that night. I agreed…yeah right! They left, about 3 minutes later I left and headed for MK. DD had an appt. at BBB in the Castle that morning, I was not missing that!!! I stopped at the bakery for a treat, took my meds, and scooted (in the ECV again) to the castle. I beat DW and family by 2 minutes, she was grumpy but got over it. BBB was great, she loved it, and of course everyone called her princess the rest of the trip. It was really worth the $ to us. Well, a few rides in, and Liberty Tree for lunch. William Penn pasta is out of this world, my DB made the right recommendation there!!! The Ooey Gooey toffee pie was excellent as well. We basically got one of everything to sample, the pasta was the best to me. Walked out to the parade passing, DD and DS loved this! Made our way around then ended up at PotC, while waiting for DW to park the stroller, she and DD are intercepted by a cast member, curious). So then we’re all waiting to go into the attraction, but they’re still with the cast member. So I hobble over to see what’s taking so long. The cast member was a Dream Squad member, and granted my DD a 5 minute private court appearance with Cinderella (who she was dressed like from BBB)!!! So we had to go to the Exp. Hall on Main Street and DD and Cinderella had a magical time, what a treat! I have to say, my DD can be the typical 3 year-old a lot of the time, but every time she met a character or princess at the parks she truly brought a tear to my eye with her manner and patience, that was truly magical!!!! Then headed out to rest at the room for La Nouba. I have but three words to describe this show: A MA ZING!!!!!!!!!! Words can’t do it justice, we absolutely loved it, terrific. Plus Shaquille O’Neal was there in person in the crowd! Poured down raining that night, didn’t rain again until our last day…unfortunate part was that we were drenched before La Nouba since I was still hobbling!

Day starts with the DVC tour. We were picked up at OPR and taken to SSR and the preview center. Nice set up over there, really classy approach with the waiting area. We finally met our guide Ayanna in person, and quickly moved onto viewing the mockups for AKV. Still hard walking, but not hurting as much, so I managed. We entered a studio first, about what we expected. Then the 1 BR villa, wow…the internet pics/tours can’t do it justice. So naturally, as we’re walking thru the master BR, DW looks me dead in the eye and says, “We need more points!” UGH…I’ve been begging for more points since we bought, and here she is…well, enough about that. We took in the whole 2 BR villa and then she showed us a SSR grand villa…very impressive, but both are still beyond our needs right now. So then we went to what I called the “closing building” and added on 50 points, paying cash. I’m really excited because now we can probably squeeze out 2 trips a year in a 1 BR…cool!!! The best freebie she did was the fastpasses and ice cream, which I was a bit disappointed in, but next time we do the tour we’ll be adding another full contract. The rest of the day we stayed at CBR and had dinner at WC at WL. Not as rowdy as the last time we went, but the food was good, not great, but good. Then the P&PP at MK that night. This extra is great, my DD loved the parade, she told every princess “Hi” and the waits were so minimal, we basically rode the entire MK in one night. The only MK attraction I did not get to do was the Laugh Floor, but in November maybe we’ll get in there.

Tired…but it took me less than 2 minutes to get out of bed. Back not nearly as stiff, and walking almost upright…the roid’s are kicking in. Also, about the meds…I ate like a beast, and found I was never full…I’m told that’s a side-effect of the steroids, but a welcomed one!!! My family went to AK to do a couple of things (this is our least favorite park). We rode the Dinosaur Dumbo ride (as I call it), then DW rode EE. She said its awesome, but too short…I wouldn’t know! Then did the Nemo musical…that show is great, highly recommend! Afterwards headed out, waited to see Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger…the kids had a blast and got some great pics. Then off to AKL/AKV to have a late lunch. The resort looks great as usual, and we took some pics of the construction from afar. The lobby looks to be impressive just by the structure. The headed to the Mara to eat and left to head back to the resort. We did the HDD at FW for dinner. Great as usual, but find the early show is rushed due to the shows that follow. I still prefer the last show, to be honest.

Am I still here…OMG this family bonding thing will kill me if nothing else does!!! Walking straight today, and able to help with the kids for the first time, performance enhancing drugs 1, back pain 0. Headed out to MGM, er HS in the a.m. for DW to ride TSM and/or RRC, neither happened, so we headed out to the boat launch to get to WS to see the countries. At the UK, we were sitting the courtyard enjoying fish/chips when Alice and Mary Poppins emerge from a doorway. Alice grabs DD by the hand and takes her with to the spot she wanted to pose. Wow, another princess type meeting, got great pics with both. We then head onto France, DW got a Grand Marnier Orange Slush (not as good as we were expecting), DM got a Grey Goose Lemonade Slush (better than expected). I only took a sip of each b/c of my meds. The rest of our party (non-drinkers and judgemental) then ditched us unannounced and took off towards Morocco. We passed Morocco and went to Japan for DD to pick a pearl (family tradition), then onto AA for VoL and the show. Upon entering the domed area, a cast member approached us to inform us that if we were interested we could be the “First Family” of the AA for today’s show. I.E…we watched the VoL from a bench on the second floor (alone) and were seated in the theater before everyone else to pick our seats, and then recognized prior to the show (said our name and home state—neat!). The on thru the Italy, Germany and headed to the monorail for O’Hana ressies. This was the best meal of the trip—hands down!!! Everything was outstanding, the service, entertainment, and the food—wow!!!

Went to finish up Epcot. Turtle Talk was great, that’s really something to see. Then Soarin’, an instant classic in my book. I then went with DD to view the Epcot 25th anny. exhibit in Innoventions, it’s a nice tribute, brings back a lot of good memories. The rest of the party did Imagination then. Did lunch at Electric Umbrella then headed to WS to finish the countries. 1st Mexico, ate dinner (not much to comment here other than to say I’m not going back for a long time, not a kid friendly menu and they screwed up our tables). Did the Gran Fiesta Tour…good update, DD loved seeing the characters and sang “It’s a Small World” during the village sequence. Then Maelstrom and Norway, classics, and headed to China for the movie…excellent. Walked out of the film at 8:53 and walked right up to the barriers for a front row seat for Illuminations…sweet!

Went to DD to shop and get that out of the way to pack that night. Had ressies at Chef Mickey’s for dinner. Was good, would prefer breakfast to be honest.

Back to DD for Rainforest and DisneyQuest. Rainforest was great as usual (my fave is the Hong Kong Stir Fry!!!). Found out it will be a long time until we go back to DisneyQuest with the kids, still too young for this. Back to OPR with 2 hours before we would be picked up…so we unloaded all our remaining CS and Snack credits and had a feast before leaving. Flight back home was okay, my kids slept, nephew screamed almost non-stop, and there was a child two rows ahead of us that did scream non-stop the whole flight.

Bus service was not bad IMO, but inconsistent. I think during the slow parts of the day they attempt now to transport as many folks as possible to make the gas worth the use. This is just MO, nothing more than that.

I will not do the large family thing again for more than 3 nights, that’s my limit. On day 4 don’t ask where I’m going…I’m not going to tell.

DVC is over the top as far as being pushed in the parks, on the back of buses, in the buses, etc. The DVC kiosks are even on the guide maps, I know it’s a marketing thing, but it’s really hard to escape the “best kept Disney secret.”

The DVC tour is very low-pressure. Although we had already bought, we went with BIL and his fiancée. Our guide, Ayanna, was very pleasant to talk to and did not try to push a purchase at them. Good experience, the ice cream was great and the fast passes came in handy.

On BLT…that building is impressive, until you see it up close on the monorail or at CR you can’t really appreciate the enormity of it. It looks (IMO) like the top floor will have grand villas built like those planned for KV and the ones found at SSR (two floors). We spoke to a few cast members regarding the building. Here’s some feedback regarding BLT:

DVC kiosk guy Vance at CBR: “I had lunch with DVC president Jim Lewis just last week, and he told us that the DVC at the Contemporary will be unlike any DVC we’ve built so far.”—that’s a direct quote from this guy.

DVC guide Ayanna during our tour: “It’s a good thing you guys are adding on now because you never know, points could jump up in price soon.”—she said this with raised eyebrows and a wink. My wife then said, “You wouldn’t be referring to the Contemporary, would you?” Ayanna replied, “You never know.”—again with eyebrows raised.

Monorail attendant at MK. I asked him, “What are they building next to that hotel over there?” He replied, “I think that’s the Contemporary Hotel, I think they’re adding onto it.”—lights on, nobody’s home!

Cast Member working at CR sundries shop: “Oh, that’s DVC. We’ve been told that’s the DVC building over there, we’re 99% sure that’s what it is.”

Lastly…cast members are different there. Many of the folks working there view working there as a job, and just that. A lot of cast members still strive to make the magic, but a lot is lacking. My DM says too many cast members see us as customers now, not guests. To some degree (sadly) I think she’s right. But honestly, I did not have a single bad cast member experience. I think some of it has to do with a different generation working the entry level jobs, but who knows. I’m not discouraged enough to stop going!!!

We did do Typhoon Lagoon one morning, was okay, want the kids to be older before going back.

I liked DDP, but not the auto 18% gratuity for have a party over 6, I thought for us, the plan was worth the expense.

Overall, my children had a blast, we can’t wait to stay at our DVC’s in the future, and I still love WDW—period!!!

I know these posts have been exhaustive, but I didn't want anyone to miss one second of the agony I've been thru these 10 days!!!!

Great trip report! What a trooper you are heading out to the parks with back pain and for surviving a 10-day trip with extended family. I'm glad your meds gave you some relief, at least for issue #1.

Sounds like you should get a medal for bravery! Not only did you survive a large group trip, but back pain too!

I think the 18% gratuity is for everyone on the dining plan...not just the large groups.

I think the 18% gratuity is for everyone on the dining plan...not just the large groups.

I believe it's added for the DDE card, no matter party size; on DDP it is only automatic for 6 or over. That is why so many CM's were freaking when the new system came on board--because people didn't realize the gratuity was not included any longer.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write so much detail. It means a lot to those of us counting the days....

So sorry you had to endure that awful back pain. :worried: Doing WDW is hard enough when you are feeling great ( at least for those of us who don't have the endurance to run marathons).

Thanks again - I really enjoyed your report.

Deb

Great report. Thanks.

Steroid pack.... GooooooooD. I feel for you. I have twice broken vertebrae and once ruptured a disk.... But now I am fine and can't wait to catch the waves at VB.

Take it easy... :goodvibes

Awesome trip report - thanks for it! I can't wait to experience AKV in person this October!!
