The financially irresponsible WDW trip! [June 25th: p.45, posts 668 & 669]

Aw thanks guys. I'll get a new chapter started later this evening. Finally work has tapered off a bit - I've been doing 7 day weeks for about 8 weeks now. The problem is I wouldn't work at all if I had an option. Work ethic, what's that? :lmao: Anyway, I'll get to this soon. Thanks for sticking with me.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I'm currently head to toe in an angry red rash - apparently the fever last week was as a result of strep throat, which I still have. Even though my throat isn't sore. :confused3 Because it hadn't been treated it came out as an itchy rash all over so I've just started some meds. Never had a rash before - it looks horrible. And I'm thinking of hiring a poor student to scratch me - minimal wage.

See ya all later!

OMG! Deb, I am so sorry, but you are too funny! I can just imagine someone walking around with you, scratching your itch, as you try to get your work done.:lmao:

Hope you feel better.:goodvibes

Thanks Shark! I'm feeling much better. I've been warned to take the antihistamines, antibiotics and creams event though I feel just fine now. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Ahem stop talking American :rotfl:

:lmao: That's the weird thing - the doc referred to it as "strep throat" and I said "isn't that just in the movies?" and he laughed out loud and said no, it's a specific type of infection that's not overly common here but it's called "strep". It must be from hanging out with my American DIS friends on here. :lmao:

Sorry about your strep throat (or strep body rash?:confused3 ), nasty stuff that is! It's untelling what you have contracted from us Americans, we have all kinds of fun germs!

With all the work and all your sickness, sounds like Deb needs some R&R! You need some major Deb time. Lots of napping, some cool drinks, maybe a big bowl of popcorn and some Disney videos!

OMG hope I don't catch it too :lmao: Seriously though hope you're feeling better and you're getting someone to scratch you :rotfl2:

Part 27: Future World & Cirque du Soleil!

Thursday 2nd November, 2006

Minor recap (I know I know, enough with the recaps, get on with the Disney trip already! I won't take long I promise...): We're on day 10 of our 17 day trip. So far we've been to Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Cocoa Beach, Kennedy Space Center, MNSS Halloween Party and World Showcase.

Today we're off to Epcot again but this time to explore Future World. Later today we have Cirque du Soleil planned and, in between those two, some relaxation time back at The Boardwalk.

On Wednesday I had decided to book another ADR for either Thursday or Friday. You see, we had a rough plan to go to Spoodles on the previous Sunday (our first night at BWV) but we never made it so we were a few TS credits over. Oddly enough, when I was planning this trip I had a very hard time narrowing down my ADR choices and yet now I couldn't decide where to use them. I had thought of trying to get to 1900 Park Fare that morning (I definitely want to eat there some day) but I knew it would be very time-consuming getting the bus to/from MK so I thought why not try Spoodles for breakfast on Thursday? So that's what we did. It was great being able to just leave our villa and go downstairs on to the Boardwalk for breakfast!!

The food itself was nothing spectacular - I honestly don't think you can beat the Disney buffets for choice. Love love love those!! But Spoodles was okay and the convenience was a big pro!

One little irritation though - as you know, Alice was just 2 and, therefore, not on the dining plan so she was sharing from our plates. We ordered her a juice and paid out of pocket. But afterwards (when we'd already left the restaurant) I checked the receipt and it turns out the CM had taken 5 TS credits instead of 4. We had a hell of a time reversing this at the desk in the Boardwalk later and the manager there insisted it was accurate no matter how often we pointed out that she wasn't on the dining plan and that we had paid cash for her juice. Anyway, in the end he reluctantly rectified it but it was a bit annoying. (But don't write off the Boardwalk management because of such a trivial incident - you will see on our last day just how amazing these people are!).

I didn't really expect to make Epcot for park opening. We were tired that morning (no matter how well you plan a Disney trip you're gonna get weary after 9 days - deliriously happy, yes, but weary also) so when we saw a line at the turnstiles I just thought it was really busy with lots of people going in but it turns out it wasn't even 9am yet and we were there before the gates opened!! And we hadn't even tried! Just a couple of minutes later we were allowed in to a beautifully empty World Showcase and headed straight for Future World. What a beautiful walk this is and the theming, my God the theming! When I crave Disney World (and I do a lot!) it's this area all around World Showcase that makes my heart yearn.

At this time, the Nemo attraction in the Living Seas was brand new so we decided that DH would take the kids over there while I went to get Soarin FPs and I'd follow them over. The sun was already strong in the sky - even at 9am on a November morning! No problem getting Soarin' FPs and I could tell we (or rather, TGM - cheers lad!) had picked a good day for Epcot as the crowds I'd read about in The Land fighting for Soarin' FPs simply didn't exist. It was all very civilised.

After I secured the FPs I made my way over to meet up with the others. Isn't Epcot huge? All that concrete, all those different sections. :faint: But when I got there DH said Nemo wasn't starting 'til 10. I guess I missed that piece of info in my planning! But not to worry. I remembered hearing that Character Connection is really quiet first thing in the morning and, as it happened, DH said a CM had approached him earlier asking if they'd like to come into Character Connection as it was empty. So this felt right and off we went and sure enough, we had the whole place to ourselves!! :yay:

This was such an wonderful experience with lots of interaction and fun and games with the characters. As you can see from the photos below, poor Kermit was the butt of a lot of jokes :lmao: Alice was less than impressed once more with Pluto - it seems he got on her wrong side back in MK the previous Tuesday. She was quite annoyed with him, including sighing and rolling eyes, the works. She loved all the other characters though.....

When it came time to meet Minnie, Alice shyly approached her. As it happened Alice was playing with a sticker she'd received the previous day from a CM in Epcot which she had carried around in her Snow White 'apple' bag. Anyway, Minnie handed Alice a sticker and Alice looked at the one she already had and said "well ok" and gave Minnie her own sticker thinking she needed to do a swap. This got all the CMs around the characters saying "awww" - they thought it was adorable that Alice was willing to give up her own sticker to get the new one. :goodvibes She was very relieved when Minnie indicated that she could take the new sticker and keep her own one too!!!

This is blurry but this is where she handed over her sticker to get the new one......

Next we made our way to Mission Space. No way was I going near it and even though they now have the mild version, DH wouldn't brave it either as he had a splitting headache after it on our first trip so we just hung out in the gift shop and waited for the boys. A CM in the shop took a shine to Alice and lo and behold she got another Magical Moments certificate! That CM was so friendly and we had a nice chat - she was from Japan and seemed pleased to talk about her home country. One thing I found amazing was that she was open-mouthed with shock when I told her we were from Ireland and she kept saying "you came all this way?". Then she alerted her colleague behind the counter that "they came all the way from IRELAND to visit Disney World". He gave a kinda "so what?" look :lmao: but she kept expressing her amazement. I then said "but you came all the way from Japan" and she just laughed and said "but that's different". I guess she meant cause she worked there. Anyway, she was a lot of fun and just couldn't stop smiling at Alice. :goodvibes She took her by the hand over to a mirror and stood behind her and said "do you see how beautiful you are Princess, do yo know just how beautiful you are?". Odd but sweet. ;)

When the boys were done, we went to check out Test Track but as the wait time was already too long we got more FPs and made our way to Soarin'. After securing a baby swap pass, we decided that DH would go first with the boys while I took Alice to the CS place there in The Land. I was craving some chocolate. I treated Alice to an ice cream (her very favourite treat!) and I got a nice slab of decadent chocolate cake. I guess this wasn't our day for dining credits though - I told the CM we wanted to use snack credits but I think she was distracted and when I gave her my room key she gave me back a receipt and it turns out she charged it the room, rather than deducting credits. I told her about it and she said she could fix it but having previously experienced the ridiculous red tape that is Disney's administrative system I just left it off and knew we'd use the snack credits on other things anyway. No worries.

Alice loved her ice cream and it was nice for us to sit and chat together for a while. I love spending one-on-one time with the children (my own kids I mean, back off, I'm not a pushover babysitter here :rotfl2:). I strategically placed the chocolate cake in front of Alice while I discreetly leant over and ate it myself. Does anyone else do this? Pretend the goodies are for the kid when you know they won't even get a look in? :confused3 As if the food police are watching and judging my every move. Don't worry, if she wanted some she could have had it, I'm not that mean (well she could have had a teeny bit, from underneath, where's there's no chocolate icing - she had her own money if she wanted any more than that..... :rotfl:).

DH and the boys came back and we switched - it was my turn for Soarin'! The boys got to go on with me for their second go (love those baby swap passes!). I absolutely loved it this time round - I enjoyed it on our first trip too but simply adored it this time. What an amazingly relaxing and, at the same time, thrilling ride! I'm afraid of heights so on our first trip, I was taken aback by the realistic feeling of flying but this time I was prepared! It was fun to see Puddy in the pre-show video. I think DH knows all the Puddy lines from Seinfeld off by heart. We love that guy. :thumbsup2 By the time we got back Alice was very bored - DH had attempted to bring her into the Circle of Life movie but she was complaining a bit so he changed his mind for the sake of the other guests. I guess she was just getting bored of waiting around for us, which I was always conscious of and tried not to overdo. So we thought this was a good time to go to the Living Seas as I guessed she'd have fun there.

We spent quite a bit of time outside watching those adorable gulls. I think *everyone* loves them.

Part 28: Future World & Cirque du Soleil (continued...)

(Still) Thursday, 2nd November 2006

The Nemo attraction was good - short and sweet, nothing more. We enjoyed the atmosphere in the Living Seas and the boys were very impressed with the diver doing her demonstrations in the tank. Up next was Turtle Talk with Crush and that was a huge hit with all of us. Very funny dialogue. I'll add a short video clip of that later (don't worry, I didn't use any flashes or lights of any kind!).......

After this we made our way to the aquarium and all I can say is "wow"! What a vast array of beautiful fish - such wonderful colours. Alice was mesmerised by them. As luck would have it, it was feeding time and it was quite a sight to see the diver being followed by hundreds and hundreds of fish all anxious to get a bite!

Alice spotted a star fish and Garth told her it was Patrick (Spongebob's friend) - she was thrilled with this and waved at him. Word spread fast and a little boy next to us said to his Dad "I heard that boy say this is Spongebob's friend Patrick" and so a few kids gathered around to get a glimpse of a real life Universal character in Disney's Epcot. :lmao: I had visions of all the star fish being removed en masse in a massive tank some time later that day!

Here's Alice entranced by all those fish.....

livingseas3.jpg

We spent quite a long time in the Living Seas and it turned out to be a great family occasion and very relaxing because, other than Turtle Talk, there was no great pressure to line up or get FPs or anything like that. We were just browsing and enjoying ourselves. When we were finished there we decided that we'd do one more thing (Test Track) and then make our way over to The Boardwalk for a long break and a swim before returning to Epcot later for our ADR in Alfredos.

So while DH took the boys to Test Track I went to the UK with Alice to see if Snow White was around. She was!! However, Alice was now asleep so I decided to hold off a while and get something to eat and wait for the boys and DH before joining the line. I, er, shared a portion of Harry Ramsden fish and chips with Alice (yes yes, I know she was asleep but that's not the point. :teeth:) and I 'cleverly' placed the shortbread dessert in front of her.

When the boys came back Alice was waking up so we went to meet Snow White and Dopey. This was a terrific experience and I was so glad Alice had worn her Snow White dress again today (remember eons ago in the last chapter, she had worn the dress the day before for our Akershus lunch but Snow White wasn't there). Snow White was absolutely wonderful. I asked her why Dopey was there and not the other dwarves and she said "well you see, the alarm went off at 6am but Dopey didn't know that it meant it was time for work so he went back to sleep while the others went to the mine. Rather than leave him alone, I took him with me today". She then gave this look that said "what can you do with him?" - very funny!

Here are my favourite Alice pics - meeting her very favourite Disney character.

In the first two pics Alice is showing Snow White a little toy zebra called Zeb Zeb she carried with her everywhere in her bag. She had Zeb Zeb cuddled in her hands ready to show Snow White when the time came. Show White was very impressed and said "oh do you love animals?" and Alice said yes so Snow White clapped her hands and said "oh so do I!" Alice was thrilled. I can't say enough good things about this interaction. It was just amazing.

Afterwards, we strolled back to the Boardwalk and, having tried unsuccessfully to get them some lunch for DH and the kids on The Boardwalk (once more, I must say they really need a decent CS place here!) they opted to have lunch back in the room instead.

As always, time caught up with us too fast and although we had planned to spend an hour or two exploring World Showcase before our ADR at Alfredos, we ended up running out of time and making a dash just to get to the restaurant on time. We loved Alfredos (and I was sorry to hear about it closing soon). The staff were very accommodating with the meals - at this time Garth was not a fan of pasta (unlike the rest of us) but this meal brought him around and he actually cleaned his plate - it was a basic pasta in tomato sauce but up to then he would never eat that kinda meal and really loved it!

alfredos.jpg

We had a wonderful server who was very happy to talk about his home country. We love Italy and have been fortunate enough to go their twice. It turns out he grew up in a town very near a place we had stayed in many years ago called St Bartalomeo. He was pleasantly surprised that we knew all about this small town and we had a lovely chat with him. The desserts were delicious and I loved how he brought out the dessert trolley showing us everything they had - it made it so easy to choose. Here's a couple of pics.....

dessert.jpg

alfredos2.jpg

He gave DH a hard time for ordering coffee instead of capachino :lmao: and made a big show of serving my capachino ("real Italian") while pretending to practically slam DH's coffee down in front of him. lol! He then said that I was welcome back in Italy any time but not so much DH and his awful coffee. :rotfl2: He was terrific and we left him a nice tip for his trouble. After this it was time to dash back to the BW to get a cab to Downtown Disney for Cirque du Soleil. :woohoo:

First we got this nice sunset pic...

sunset.jpg

I have vowed that if (I mean WHEN - must stay positive) we get back to Disney World we're gonna make sure we don't end up running and racing next time. It seemed on this trip like we never left enough time to get places. :confused3 Anyway, back at the Boardwalk, the boys needed the bathroom so we took care of that and who should we bump into but Mike and K (our friends from the TGM forums who we had met for the MNSSHP parade and in Norway the day before!). They had just had dinner in Spoodles and were checking out the hotel itself. We were under pressure to get going by now and I felt a bit rude running off after just a few minutes but we kinda had to. Thankfully there was a taxi van sitting there so we got to DTD in just a few minutes with plenty of time to spare.

Buying tickets for Cirque du Soleil was a much debated and analysed decision. Much as I wanted to see the show (and I knew DH and the kids would love it too) we had decided that it was just too expensive and we weren't going to do it. Then one night, a couple of weeks before our trip, I saw a documentary on TV about it and it struck me that, most likely, it will never come here to Ireland and so this was a unique chance to see it. The boys were amazed by the stuff they saw in the documentary but being good kids, they know how lucky they are to get to Disney World twice and wouldn't dare push their luck by asking to see Cirque du Soleil. I had told them that the tickets were too dear and they would never question that but I could tell by looking at their reaction to the TV show that they would just love to go. So just a couple of weeks before out trip, I decided to book the tickets and surprise them all!! So a few days before the show, we were talking about the upcoming days and the boys and DH all agreed that Thursday would be a good night to see Illuminations instead of Wednesday. Yikes! That's when I decided to tell them about the surprise and I'm glad I did. We needed a good break that afternoon and I know if I hadn't told them in advance about Cirque du Soleil they'd have worn themselves out in Epcot that day.

So anyway here we are, in Downtown Disney, ready to collect our tickets for this amazing show. Now this is where planning really pays off. I had printed out our booking confirmation and handed it to the guy behind the desk and when he saw it he smiled and said "thank you SO much". I gave a puzzled look and he said "you would not believe how many people show up without their confirmation numbers and not even sure whose name they booked it under many moons ago". So we got our tickets and made our way inside. We found our seats which were fabulous - category 2 (no need whatsoever to pay out for category 1 tickets) - we were bang in the middle with a great view.

Now a funny thing happened here. We were seated in front of a group of friends - about six girls and guys in their 20s. When we took our seats I heard "OH GOD!" from behind us but I didn't pay much attention to it. Then the guy behind me said "we should move, can we move?" Another voice said "why? These seats are great". First voice said "you don't know why we need to move? You can't see why the show is ruined for us now???" I started to think he might be referring to us but at the same time thought no way, that I was maybe being paranoid. But just then I turned to look at the person behind the voice (sitting directly behind me) and as I looked at him just then he pointed his finger at Alice and said to his friend "THAT's why". Obviously he felt that she would ruin the show for him. But the best part of this was that ten minutes into the show a group of four or five people came in and thought that the people next to us were in their seats. They stood there and made a big drama out of the fact that someone had taken their seats - all this while the show was going on! A member of staff came quickly to move them and they walked towards the next section where their seats actually were. I thought it was so funny that a group of adults interrupted their (people behind) night whilst Alice did not make one single sound for the whole evening. :snooty: When it was over I made a big deal of saying to Alice (loud enough for those behind me to hear) "you are the BEST girl", "you were SOOOOOOOOOOO good all evening, yes you were, oh yes you were, BEST BEST girl". :lmao:

We were absolutely exhausted coming out of the show. In fact, Garth was struggling to stay awake towards the end and, as much as he loved it, he was quite relieved that it was over to he could get some sleep. But we were blown away by it and all agree that we had never seen anything like it. DH and Wayne in particular were almost speechless!

We took the (what seemed like) endless walk to the bus stop and finally our bus arrived and we made our way back to our villa. We were checking out of the BW the next morning (but due to check back in the following Sunday) so DH and I had to force ourselves to stay awake and pack up our stuff. Again! :sad2: This is where I once again questioned the wisdom of changing resorts so many times. But it had to be done. We did as much as we could that night but had to give up eventually, vowing to get up early to do more packing. We soon fell into a deep slumber, having had a really great day. I was really looking forward to the next day too - breakfast at Cape May and then our second Animal Kingdom day. :yay:

Thanks for reading!! !:)

Just a couple of minutes later we were allowed in to a beautifully empty World Showcase and headed straight for Future World. What a beautiful walk this is and the theming, my God the theming! When I crave Disney World (and I do a lot!) it's this area all around World Showcase that makes my heart yearn.

You and me, both, Deb. :sad1: I miss BWV & Epcot World Showcase all the time... sigh... The early mornings and late nights are the best. :cloud9: That feeling of having Epcot all to yourself... Priceless!

Your Alice pictures with Snow White are SO adorable, I was inspired to make this for you! :goodvibes

That's the sweetest picture I've ever seen. This is a vacation you'll remember forever.

SOOO happy to see new chapters! I've missed you! Don't keep us waiting too long for more...

Take care,

Yay!!! Deb is back. I am appalled at what those people behind you at Cirque said. You did good not responding to them. And giggle that Alice was so well behaved!! ;)

I have to laugh at you putting your dessert infront of Alice. I used to do that too. If I were to put my dessert infront of one of my kids now, they would eat it! I also will just cut slivers of cake off to eat so no body will be the wiser that I had taken a second piece.

I loved the update and all of the pictures. The Snow white and ALice ones are priceless.

I can't wait to read more. But I am not pressuring you in any way!

Hi Deb,
Coming out of lurkdom because I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying your trip report! My family was there this past January and already I am wanting desperatly to go back again. This past trip was the best one yet for us,as my daughters are at an age now(14 & 19) where they spend the morning with thier dad and I and then go thier separate ways as we do our own thing, and meet up for dinner again. It was just so relaxing and enjoyable this last time, and was a new thing for me as I am much like you when it comes to planning every day so meticulously. It was hard for me at first to just give it up after all the time I had invested into the planning. However, the older the kids get,the harder it is to stick to the plans, and so I just gave in,and found that I really enjoyed this past trip more then any other. We just stuck to our ADR's and that was it.But we actually got everything we wanted to do and so much more done, with alot less stress too! At times it was like it was a separate vacation for just my husband and I,and it just gave me a totally different view of Disney, one that I had never saw before on our previous visits. That is what is great about Disney...it may be the same place we all visit, but each vacation is always different. Anyway,I just wanted to tell you that I hope you get the chance to go back again someday, and that you will write that report too as well...I am really enjoying reading your report..the good stuff and the bad stuff, because those moments make the trip report so much more real to me as that is the sort of stuff that happens in my family too.LOL.Thank you for sharing everything with us.You have a wonderful family, and your little daughter is so adorable. I look at all the pictures of the little ones on this board and I miss when my girls were little like that...but I am pleased to know that thier are benefits that come with thier growing up...like them going to do the things they want while hubby and I do are own things. It is nice in that way.Anyway, thanks again!:goodvibes

:faint: I couldn't believe my eyes to see 2 updates and great they are too

I love love love the snow white photos they are adorable, I hope you've printed one off :goodvibes I'm glad you enjoyed your choccie cake even if you pretended it was Alice's :rotfl2: I can't believe how rude those people in Cirque were :confused3 We saw it at the Albert Hall a few years ago, absolutely amazing although I felt as though I needed several more sets of eyes to see everything :rotfl:

So happy to see TWO installments!

The pictures are super sweet. Shame of those people at the circus. They are at Disney World for goodness sake!

Shame of those people at the circus. They are at Disney World for goodness sake!

I know. I bet they're a thrill a minute to be around.

:woohoo: Thank you for rewarding us with two installments...and great installments at that!

What great character interaction you guys had that day. I think it's so funny that they all took turns abusing Kermit. Especially the photo of Pluto with him in his mouth!

And of course, Alice and Snow White. What can I say? It's a beauty.

And the kids behind you at Cirque? Someday they will know how hard it can be to bring a child to something like that...keeping pockets stuffed with things to entertain, snacks, drinks, and the like. It's very stressful. The last thing you needed was a smart mouth adding to the pressure. I'm glad Alice enjoyed herself, so that you and DH could enjoy.

Looking forward to more.

And have a wonderful holiday next week:goodvibes

:woohoo: Deb is Back with 2 installments :woohoo:

What a great day to read about!!!!!!!!! I LOVED the Alice with Snow White pictures----talk about adorable.

Glad you liked Cirque...that is something we have still never done but always mean to do. That is what keeps us going back to Disney.....the proverbial carrot right.......dangling out there something to draw you back & there is ALWAYS something new. I  Disney!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep em comin Deb........
