The financially irresponsible WDW trip! [June 25th: p.45, posts 668 & 669]

Oh, er, people from Michican aren't allowed stay with Irish people at DVC resorts. :rolleyes1 Something to do with the clash in time zones and accents. Sorry. It's right there in the paperwork. :tiptoe: ;)

Well I must say I am crushed! :sad2: That will teach me not to read the fine print. :lmao: I'm sure an update to your trippie would make me feel all better and happy again. Hint! Hint! :rolleyes1

Chapter 24: Epcot - World Showcase & pool time!

Day 9 - 1st November, 2006

Today we were NOT rushing to a theme park! Yay!! As MNSSHP was the previous evening, I had planned for this to be our World Showcase day. Thank you Disney gods for deciding on 11 for WS opening time. A couple of hours rest without I’m-missing-out-on-Disney guilt. :woohoo:

So the plan was to spend a little bit of time exploring WS before our lunch ressie in Akershus at 11.45pm. We took our time getting ready and had a light breakfast - famine mentality, remember - we’ve got TS credits for lunch and we’re sure as hell gonna make the most of them!!

The reason I chose Akershus was because, being the Mom of a sweet little girl, I reckoned it would be nice for her to meet the princesses in style while, at the same time, not actually re-mortgaging to afford the ghastly prices at CRT. When she’s older we’ll do CRT if she’s keen (and we have the money!). I remember reading a TR where the Mom took her two little toddler girls to CRT and they slept through lunch - she thought it was cute. I thought it was tragic. Financially tragic I mean. I must say I admired her attitude though.

So I could have sworn I read that Snow White was one of the princesses at Akershus. I know Disney doesn’t guarantee any particular character appearances but in all my research I thought I’d often heard about Snow White being there. With that in mind, today was the day for Alice to wear her Snow White dress.

I was never a princessy girl myself but the exception was Snow White. I always loved that story and movie and I have vivid memories of [DIGRESSION ALERT. DIGRESSION ALERT] a special school treat more than 30 years ago..... the day we broke up for our Christmas break the nuns showed Snow White & The Seven Dwarves in the little school hall on a reel to reel. Oh wow! It was magical. I remember seeing the opening credits roll and knowing we were about to see something magical As a result, I’ve always had a soft spot for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is it’s the story I most often tell ‘Alice’ when I’m settling her to sleep, when I have time [MOMMY GUILT ALERT. MOMMY GUILT ALERT]. I need to make more time for that sort of thing.

So anyway, off we walked to the International Gateway. This was our first time making this trip and we loved it. One minute we were on the Boardwalk and a few minutes later, well I couldn’t believe it, there in front of us was the entrance to Epcot! It’s a very pleasant walk, passing near the Beach Club and then coming onto a lovely bridge.

We went through the turnstiles and a CM came over to us, full of smiles and admiration for Alice’s Snow White dress. She called us into the UK store, asked what Alice’s name was, and gave her a Magical Moments certificate saying something like “Epcot Princess of the Day”. It was lovely!!

I forgot to mention that in MK the day before, when we came out of Tony’s, the staff in that little store just off the restaurant asked Alice to help them get Tramp’s lunch ready. ;) They asked her to throw a little plastic bone into his bowl from a few feet away. She did it so she got her first Magical Moments certificate there. It was really sweet!!!

So, our princess in tow, we were ready for our World Showcase day!!

Garth got this pic, which I love, of 'Alice'. I think he has a GREAT eye for photography. What do you think?
DSC01954.jpg

We were really looking forward to touring World Showcase. We totally missed it on our first trip (well with the exception of running to and from an ADR in Rose & Crown prior to Illuminations one very wet night) so it was a priority on this trip. Unfortunately we were running late this morning and, as it turned out, didn’t have time to really savour the wonderful sights of UK and Canada. I wanted to put my head down and run through it instead of ‘spoiling’ any wonderful sights before we could truly enjoy them properly. While I didn’t quite do that, I did suggest to the boys that we focus now on making our lunch reservation and we’d have plenty of time later to look around.

We saw Norway up ahead and went directly to the restaurant to check in.

FH000028.jpg

There was a little line but in no time at all, it was our turn to meet Ariel. I didn’t realise that you meet Ariel first in a special alcove for a photo. But it was nice. We bought the photos cause I couldn’t resist them. Here they are......

ariel1.jpg

ariel2.jpg

We were shown to our table by our server and got our starters from the buffet. Plenty of choice and especially good for vegetarians with plenty of breads, salads and cheeses. I think we ordered baked pasta for our main course, can’t quite remember, but whatever it was it was great. Dessert was a platter including strawberry cheesecake and a couple of other bits.

But that’s all about the food, what about the characters? Well, when we first arrived I looked around frantically for Snow White and couldn’t see her. Noooooo!!! So I asked the server and he confirmed that she wasn’t there today. Oh no!

My disappointment quickly vanished though just as soon as the first (well the second if you count the photo with Ariel) princess came over – Aurora. She was so funny. She immediately referred to ‘Alice’ as “my friend Snow White” and, looking at Wayne and Garth, said to her “I see you brought Grumpy and Dopey with you today”. :lmao: The boys got a great kick out of this!

Here's Alice meeting Aurora
aliceandaurora.jpg

Next up was Jasmine. It’s years since we’ve seen Aladdin so I must say I’m not too familiar with her but, like the rest of the characters, she was great! Alice didn’t know who she was (as she’s never seen the movie) and was a bit shy at first but took a shine to her after a little while! :)

DSCF1042.jpg

Then it was time to meet Belle who was adorable ......

DSCF1038.jpg

...... and last, but not least, Cinderella - Alice was quite shy with her and didn’t quite take to her the same as the others but that could have been ‘character fatigue’!!!!! lol!

Surprisingly, we all really enjoyed Akershus. I didn’t think the boys would like it much (with the whole Princess thing) but they really did. It was terrific – the atmosphere and surroundings were first class and our server was very efficient and accommodating. 10 out of 10!

When we finished we went outside to meet Mike and K (which we had arranged to do the night before) and there they were in front of us and Mike produced a big bag of gifts for us. Oh no! Well, oh yes, wonderful, but oh no! I’ll be honest, it never even crossed my mind to bring gifts for them. Had I known Mike longer I think I would have thought of it but meeting up with him and K was such a casual arrangement, I didn’t think of it. Their generosity astounded me. They’re such nice guys. They gave *each* of us a t-shirt from Atlanta along with a wonderful ‘History of Disney’ book and some little nick nacks including a fridge magnet. Wow (!) but also *ouch* - how embarrassing! Should I say “oh we left your gifts back at the villa, how silly of us” (and then run to the nearest store and buy something) or should I come clean? Well I opted for the latter and just said “we didn’t get you guys anything, sorry”. :teeth: They said they didn’t mind but I still felt bad.

The boys were getting restless and anxious to see things so DH took them to Maelstrom while Alice and I stayed and chatted with the guys. They recommended the little pastry café so we went in there and I treated us all to coffee and cakes. Um, yeah, like that’s gonna make up for all their gifts and I even used my snack credits for it. Oh God!!!!! :lmao:

I feel kinda ashamed to admit this, but Disney time is so precious, while I very much enjoyed chatting to Mike and K, as time ticked by, and it was increasingly obvious that they were happy to sit and relax with us for hours on end, and part of me was calculating all the things we were missing and thinking about my plan and how our desire to see World Showcase was kinda falling apart. Is that awful? By now the boys were back and busied themselves playing with the ship in Norway. But I was conscious that they were getting sick of hanging around. In the meantime, I was tired and asked the kids if they’d like to go back to The Boardwalk for a swim and we’d catch up with World Showcase later. They agreed! So we said our goodbyes to Mike and K and agreed to meet them later for Illuminations! Excellent - we have a plan again - heart rate decreasing, blood pressure stabilising. :thumbsup2

We were back in the Boardwalk in no time.....
If you look closely you’ll see Wayne and Garth up ahead in the distance. :lmao:
DSCF1051.jpg

We got our swimming gear and went to the pool, via a quick stop off at the Boardwalk General Store. I had promised Alice a little treat and she chose a battery-operated Nemo lollipop holder. The man at the checkout was very much taken with her and we had a very nice chat about this and that. Love those Disney CMs!!!

After that, straight to the pool. It was a dull day today - still hot as hell of course but just a bit overcast. The boys went to the big pool and had a ball.....

Can you spot Garth under the water? :rotfl:
FH000034.jpg

Once I was certain they were settled and safe, I took Alice to the little teeny kids pool. But first, I treated myself to a glass of wine from the pool bar - a rare treat - and I didn’t know if I looked like a mom relaxing on vacation with a nice glass of vino or an irresponsible cretin drinking with a toddler in her charge. Just in case, I kinda half hid the glass under the sun lounger. The kids pool is very small but Alice enjoyed herself and liked the elephant alongside it. There’s also a lovely playground just a few feet away which she loved too. We stayed in this area for quite a while.

FH000037.jpg

The battery-operated Nemo lollipop holder ultimately met its doom here!
FH000039.jpg

An odd thing occured at one point - Alice asked where Garth was and why he wasn’t here playing with her. She loves her brothers so much and is too young yet to understand that they have other needs and desires that exclude her. They do devote an incredible amount of time to playing with her. [Heaven help any girl they might bring home in the future cause they’re gonna have mighty stiff competition for the boys’ attention. Yikes!!! lol! ] So anyway, at one point, she just got out of the kids pool and marched with intent over to the big pool saying “I’m going to swim with ‘Garth’”. Um, yeah, okay. She (being a very gentle, cautious little girl) wouldn’t just walk into the big pool would she? Nah! Well, just in case, I was hot on her heels, running self-consciously in my bathing suit, not having had time to throw even a towel over myself. Sure enough she headed confidently for the main pool, right to the edge, and had I not picked her up, I’m pretty sure she’d have jumped in. But all was fine. I called Garth over and asked him to take her in his arms while I clumsily hopped over the side, sploshing myself in with no class at all. :rotfl: I then took her off Garth and she and I had a ball splashing and laughing. It worked out great actually as the boys took turns holding her too and I got to have a much-needed swim!!!!

Shortly afterwards, DH joined us and we had a hell of a time moving Alice from the pool area. But, tantrums-a-plenty we did it. As soon as we were in the hotel, she was quite happy to go back to the room. We were starving by now but the plan was to get straight back to Epcot and eat there as it was now 6ish on our WS day and basically we had only seen Norway and glanced at the UK and Canada. So off we trotted for our wonderful evening at WS.......

To be continued soon.....

Whoooohoooo another installment :cool1:

I can remember my DSis being so jealous when we were little as I went to see SW at the Cinema for a friends birthday and she couldn't come :rotfl2:

Very good photo, love Alice's big blue eyes!

Great one liner :rotfl2:

Holy cow! What a gorgeous picture!

Walking to Epcot through International Gateway for the first time!... ahhh isn't it great?! :goodvibes The princess lunch sounds good. :thumbsup2 We've never gone there for lunch, but we have for breakfast, which was good. Sorry you didn't get as much time as you wanted to to tour World Showcase. I hope you made your way around that night! We always try to spend several days in Epcot - it's really hard to make it through all the countries in one day! Being at the Boardwalk helps! :cloud9: Can't wait to read more!!!

Take care,
Michelle

YAY, a new installment. Alice has the most beautiful blue eyes. I hear ya on the covering up when by the pool. No need to see my cellulite bouncing around.

:cheer2: Thanks Deb for making a great Sunday even better. I loved your latest installment. I know I've said it over and over but your "Alice" is absolutely beautiful. The photos with the princesses are just precious. I also loved the "Grumpy and Dopey" comment. :rotfl2: Can't wait for more . . . hope you got to stop at some of the sights in World Showcase instead of just passing by.

:yay: :yay: :yay: Awesome Installment Deb!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: What a beautiful pic of Alice and her huge blue eyes! Oh and the precious pics of her with Ariel....I would have paid $million for them! I am so glad to hear your review of Akershus since we are going there too. My DD2 and DD3 loved your pics and immediately were interested in naming the princesses as I was reading! You are such a patient sweet person to come up with a new plan that made everyone happy! I hope you get around the WS in your next chapter! popcorn:: Looking forward to more but I dont want this report to end!

I love it! When I reminisce about Disney World that walk is one of my fondest memories. :cloud9:

We always try to spend several days in Epcot - it's really hard to make it through all the countries in one day!

That's our plan for next time!!!! The atmosphere in World Showcase is like nothing else I've ever experienced. We all agree we're gonna devote at least 2 days just to WS next time.

I'm always self conscious at the pool. But sarongs are so great!!! They hide a multitude. :lmao:

Me too!! The thing is she doesn't even remember meeting Ariel. She didn't know a lot about the princesses before our trip but since then, she's a huge fan of Ariel. 'Wayne' asked her about meeting Ariel the other night and in a highly indignant tone, hands on hips, she replied "I NEVER met Ariel". 'Wayne' was sad about it but I'm glad we have the pics and we knew before the trip that she was too young to remember anyway. We definitely need another trip when she's older so she can absorb it all and know more about the characters.

Hey Deb! Thanks for the new installment! I've never been over to the Boardwalk area. This year I have to see it! Thanks for the great photos!

Super installment! I'm trying to find a way we can hop over the WS gateway for Illuminations one night. We are staying outside the World and I have ADRs for the Beirgarten. Do they let people roam the Boardwalk shops? I'd like to park there to take advantage of the quick walk to WS?

DEB!!!

I have been having internet issues all weekend and what do I find when I can finally sign on this morning???? Another installment! :woohoo:

What great sports your boys are for going to lunch with the princesses. Mine duck for cover whenever they see one at all, let alone eat with them as they mill about. The oldest is the worst, but now my middle son is doing it as well. Oh well, I was never a princessy girl either, so it's okay with me. (Although I do like Belle.)

Alice has amazing eyes. That is a wonderful photo of her.

And thanks for the smilie  He cracks me up.

What a wonderful way to brighten up a dull Monday! Alice is seriously adorable, I loved the pics with Ariel, especially the one where she is hugging Alice! Don't fret over the gifts your new friends got you, I am sure they in no way expected anything in return, but it was nice of you to buy them snacks.:goodvibes
We went to the Princess Breakfast there in Norway last year, my boys were not thrilled. Although my oldest DS seemed to perk up when the scantly clad Jasmine appeared at our table!:sad2: Here you can see the excitement on my younger DS face with Mulan:

Can't wait to hear about your Illuminations experience! I will take this time to reminisce about our Illuminations last year. It was so awesome watching my boys chat with another young boy from England during the show! My boys shared their spot with him. The boy was a little apprehensive about the fireworks at first, but my boys reassured him whenever it got loud, patting him on the back. They had a great time! Where else but WS could they have had such an "international experience"! They still talk about the experience from time to time.Ok, reminiscing over.

Thanks for the update, loved it as always. Garth took a gorgeous picture of Alice, she is so beautiful and Garth has talent! Your down time at the pool sounded so relaxing. I plan to do more of that next time. Looking forward to more.

Great update as always! And what a fantastic photo of Alice! Garth has great talent! (And Alice is quite the cutie pie!)

Can't wait to hear more!

Sounds like you have some close knit siblings. Alice has gorgeous eyes! My favorite princess is Belle...Another great installment!

Oh The Boardwalk itself is a public area where people roam and browse through the shops, eat at Spoodles, the Bakery, and other restaurants and spend some time away from the parks. It's a great area to visit! I'm not sure though if you're allowed to park there unless you're a guest or eating there. When you drive up there's a security hut and the security guard will ask if you're a guest or have an ADR. But I'm sure others have found a way around it. We only had the car for a couple of days so I'm not sure how it all works. If you can at all, do visit there, it's a beautiful area. The boat ride to MGM is pleasant but slow and, like I said, the walk to Epcot is lovely. Thanks for reading!! :)

They are good sports. Although the difference is you see that they know (and were reassured by me) that 'Alice' is the *obvious* fan in the family so they feel confident that nobody would mistake them for being the princess fans, know what I mean? If 'Alice' wasn't there, there's no way in hell they'd attend a Princess meal!!! There was one or two occasions when 'Garth' stood back to kinda push 'Alice' forward in case anyone thought he liked princesses. Oh the horror!! :rotfl2:

I adore Illuminations. Gets me tearful every time. We had a similar experience as you. DD met a little girl from Texas who was celebrating her 5th birthday. She sat with DD and put her arm around her and comforted her when the big bangs started. It was adorable. :goodvibes

It's hard to schedule in down time as our instinct is to make the most of the parks but we've never regretted the down time either - it's always been fun. The resorts themselves have so much to offer - even the atmosphere is enjoyable so it's definitely worth taking a few hours out just to chill. :thumbsup2

Deb,

We are banking on Snow White appearing at Akershus breakfast in a few days.

It's a gamble and I hope we aren't too disappointed if she isn't there.
