The Family, Friends, Fun, Food, Five pounds (well 7 really) and....*UPDATED 12/31*

Port Orleans Resort - as we know it today, is really just the combination of two very different resorts as they were originally built and opened. The French Quarter portion is the original Port Orleans Resort. The Riverside portion was originally operated as DIXIE LANDINGS, which was a celebration of the old south. Riverside is further divided into Magnolia Bend and Alligator Bayou. Magnolia Bend buildings are designed to look like grand old plantations, while Alligator Bayou is more back river, country type dwellings, that might be found deeper in the woods, more rustic and less genteel than the rest.

They were both temporarily closed after 9/11 when bookings for WDW dropped into the basement as people didn't really want to travel for a time. When they finally reopened it in I believe it was mid-2002, rather than being two distinct resorts, they were blended into one single resort complex under the revised name banner. I've read and been told by others that Disney took that opportunity to follow legal advice and remove the Dixie Landings name since it implied a lot of different things about the old south that the lawyers weren't too thrilled with... but I cannot say for certain that that's why they did it.

Because there were originally once separate resorts, each one has it's own entrance/DME drop-off point (porte cachere)/Bell Services/Check-in desk/restaurant complex/feature pool/etc.

Here's the Riverside entrance

Prior to staying there ourselves, I read an interesting article about the two resorts and how they were designed. FQ of course celebrates the New Orleans area, and the hustle and bustle of being basically the mouth of the river - the hub of transportation in that day. Then as you go further up river you find the gracious, sprawling plantation complexes of Magnolia Bend and the port town at Dixie Landings. Then continue further up river, and you'll find the backwoods country of Alligator Bayou where supplies aren't as prevalent, and structures don't always match, since building materials aren't as readily available upriver as they are "in town". (While the buildings do look similar, as you wander around, you'll notice a variety of different brick, wood and exterior surfaces used the further you get from the main building... less brick, more wood, etc. It's really kind of cool how they played that concept out).

Looking back towards the main building, as we head into AB and the room we stayed in. The bridge you see takes you across to Ol' Man Island

Ol' Man Island is a fun place. There is the pool, a pool bar, a playground area, and the Ol' Fishing Hole where you can go and fish with a cane pole. It's a neat place for young kids to go and be able to catch something. Catch & release like elsewhere on property, but in a protected little cove, stocked with a lot of fish. Sorry, no pics of that though.

Looking down river, beyond the boat launch, towards Magnolia Bend, where the buildings are more grand, and the landscaping more refined...

Walking up into Alligator Bayou - this is the part of Riverside that will accomodate 5 in a room, via 2 doubles and a trundle bed (shorter than a twin though, so not really a good fit for anyone older than a pre-teen, though I know adults who've slept on one

The building we were in - building 25 -two of my kids are right in front of the room we were in. Note the design differences in the first pic and this one. The first one had brick, ours doesn't. Different roof lines too. Small subtle differences that might not be readily picked up on, but they do help tell the story effectively

The sink/dressing area - we were quite impressed with the quality of the finishes used. We really liked this room with the curtain that could be closed off, separating a bit from the bed area. It was very nice at night when the kids were sleeping, and we could still have the light on over the sink - a BIG difference from the values!

A look at the detail above the beds too, again, a nice step up from the values

The signage is great. You can walk around the river to get to Magnolia Bend from Alligator Bayou, or the other way around to the Lobby

Our room was just a short walk from the North bus stop. There are 4 stops, or is it 5, at least that's what I'm remembering, (though I could be wrong) on the POR loop.

Ok, but don't say later on that I didn't warn you... :lmao:

...on second thought.:lmao::lmao:

just kidding......I have never even walked into that area, I will have to make a right instead of just lefts next time.

Jeff, I think this resort is, in my opinion, one of the better themed mods on property. The only thing that would make this resort perfect for me is some Queen sized beds. Other than that we are on :cloud9: I think you will really enjoy it.

I agree. We really enjoyed our stay there. The kids loved Ol' Man Island, and my DW loved the landscaping. We enjoyed that there was bedding for all 5 of us - but yes, definitely at least a queen sized bed would be better. My DW has said she'd like to shirk DVC one time and go back there at some point in the future. Perhaps we will someday - without the kids.

This place is easily one of the more romantic places we have stayed. (I know I am getting awfully close to getting my man card revoked saying that...)

We have a Oct anniversary trip in the works that may very well be without kids.:thumbsup2 They are not very happy with the idea, but as they would say..."too bad, soo sad":lmao:

Oh yeah, me too - since I'm considering taking my DW over there on this upcoming kid-free trip for the horse drawn carriage ride. Haven't made up my mind yet, but it's definitely been under consideration. After all, there's nothing wrong with a little romance, wooing our wives now and again.

Real men love their wives! I say you get bonus points on the man card.

The anniversary trip is totally worth it. We celebrated our 10th in 2008 and took a week-long trip by ourselves to re-create our honeymoon in Arizona (Phoenix, Grand Canyon, etc.). We had a blast. So refreshing to get that time to ourselves. Come to think of it, that week went by incredibly quickly...

Couldn't agree more. :thumbsup2

Nice pics stopher! Now THAT'S how you hijack a thread. :thumbsup2

I agree 100%. We haven't done so often enough in our marriage, but I'm trying harder now. We got away for our 7th (took her to the Ahwanhee Hotel in Yosemite), 12th (borrowed by FIL's beach condo in San Clemente, CA) and for our 15th (Grand Californian at DL). She's all giddy that I'm taking her somewhere again "so soon". She didn't figure we'd do anything again until our 20th. (Score 1 for me)

Amen.

That's pretty much what we're doing next month at the WL - going back and enjoying time away on our own, like we did on our honeymoon. Granted this trip is only 3 nights whereas our HM was 13 nights...but you get the idea. We HM'd at the Grand Floridian in March 1994 - the WL wasn't open just yet (didn't open until May '94) - so this is a 16th anniversary trip. We were supposed to take this trip last year, but ended up combining it with a trip out west, so we ended up celebrating our anniversary early (beginning of Feb) at the Grand Cal instead, leaving the kids with their grandparents.

This year I was able to put the grands off about our heading out there, and got them to agree to come our way to watch the kids so that we could get away by ourselves. I actually asked my MIL about it when I was out there Solo in November... so that really helped when it came time to tell her about it - even though FIL opened his mouth first and let it slip before I ever could. But I'm really looking forward to it. DW is too, even though she doesn't know where we're going. But they, that's okay. She loves the WL based on our stay there last month. When I booked this trip last November I had an idea she'd like it, but no clue she'd like it as much as she did. Upon returning home last month from WDW, she told me that WL has now become her #1 favorite destination at WDW. So score another 1 for me even without trying. :)

Go - take that trip, and enjoy being together with just your wife! All too soon it'll be just the two of you again...

Thanks fellas, I couldnt agree more, this past Friday was the first time in a long time that my MIL took both our boys overnight. we went out for dinner and went back to an empty house. We really enjoyed getting out alone on "date night", we got some time to talk. We ended up talking about the kids. :lmao: But it was great to be alone.
Sometimes I call in sick and when the kids go to school, DW and I go spend the day together. So true about it being just the two of us again, kids grow up so fast.

And as we all know, these brownie points are like gold! :worship:

Sounds like you guys have had some amazing trips. One of these days we'll get to Yosemite...one of the few "big" parks I haven't seen yet.

We (as you probably know) have a special love for the WL also. We managed to get a 4-day weekend in Florida a couple years ago. We spent 2 nights in your standard Holiday Inn, but for the last night I was able to scrimp and save enough to surprise her with a night at the WL. So not only did I get brownie points, but we checked off an item on the bucket list as well. :cool2:

:lmao: A lot of our "date nights" end up just being us wandering aimlessly around the bookstore! But hey, we can't go sky-diving together every night. I like that sick day idea! I gotta try that.

DW grew up vacationing (camping) in Yosemite every summer. It was a dream of her's to stay in the hotel. Like you said for your WL night, I scrimped and saved for a long time to make that one happen. 2 or 3 nights, I can't remember which. Snow on the ground. Deer all over the place. It was magical. Yosemite is an awesome place - I highly recommend it if you can ever do it.

We have had some nice trips, thanks. Growing up out west we are both very rustic, mountainy people. She stayed in Yosemite, I grew up vacationing in Mammoth Lakes (the other side of the Sierra Nevada) camping, fishing & hiking. We love the whole theme of the WL. It was a dream of both of ours to stay at the WL - definitely on our bucket list. Once we joined DVC we knew we'd be able to sooner or later, and long story short, this upcoming trip was supposed to be our first stay there...but due to a variety of "mishaps" with our January trip - we kind of lucked into staying there for 2 nights then first. But now, having already been there - I'm really anxious to get back. Like her, it's right up there near the top of my favorites list at WDW.

Oh us too - except for us it's usually Target. She just loves to go and browse around. I pass it every day on the way to work so it's no big deal for me - but it's about 15-20 mins from our house, and she really doesn't get out to it much. So we'll often pick up a sandwich at the nearby deli, or a burger at the golden arches next door, and then walk around the store. Big time fun, I know - but we enjoy being alone together (along with all of the other shoppers - many of whom appear to be doing the same thing we are, just being together away from the kids for a while).

I LOVE that sick day idea....

DW and I talk about taking an adults-only vacation some day, but with our kids being 3 and 5, we feel they're just to young yet to leave for any extended period of time. Coupled with the fact that we both moved away from where our families are, so there is no one around here we would trust with them for more than an evening.
Someday we'll take that second honeymoon, but in the meantime we get to spend time enjoying the kids as kids. :grouphug:

I hear ya Barry! We've been "away" from family for 9.5 years now - we're the odd ones out being in the midwest, while the rest - both sides, are still out in the west. That's always been part of why we just haven't gotten away without the kids very much. Definitely enjoy those kids while they are young - we have ours. But at the same time, we need our time alone too without 3 very different requests being lobbed at us all the time. When it comes down to it - we really don't go away often by ourselves as we simply can't. 2200 miles to the nearest relative makes for a difficult situation...at times....and in certain circumstances.

Sad but funny story - my MIL came out 5 years ago for a week - the week of our anniversary. We wanted to go away just for a couple of nights - to the very next town - not even 30 mins from the house. The woman raised 4 kids - but when it came time to be watching her grandkids (2 of whom were not exactly babies) - she freaked out. We ended up having to cancel the 2nd night & just come home. Fast forward to today - and my boys are very much capable of running the house now - they just can't drive... so having both of my IL's here while we're in another state for 4 days... doesn't freak me out so much anymore. FIL is much more calm, cool & collected about stuff than MIL is. AND my boys can truly handle it all - they just need the grands to drive them to the store, library, etc - or be a 4th for Wii tennis! :rotfl:

We're only 3 hours or so from my family, but ever since my mom had a pretty bad brain aneurysm, she can hardly care for herself, let alone 2 preschoolers. DW parents moved down to FL a few years ago. Our kids are their only grandkids, so they miss them a lot. So much so that they want some quality alone time with them when we are down there in 2 weeks. Not just apart from DW and I, but some 1-on-2 time. Grandpa wants to take them to breakfast at Waffle House and Grandma wants to take them shopping. They're good people, and bless their hearts for wanting some quality time with the grand kids, but I don't think they have any idea what they're in for.

I wonder if Daddy-O is just going to abandon this TR and start a new one? :confused3:lmao::lmao:

Having our parents close by (< 30 minutes) is huge. Most of the time, we just get a weekend to ourselves, either to stay at our house alone or maybe get a hotel room at the beach if we want to splurge. We try to have at least one weekend to ourselves per year. But this is a lot easier when family is close!

Our kids were 6,4, and 2 when we went to Arizona. Every kid is different, but they held up just fine. My daughter was hesitant to watch us go, but the boys couldn't have been happier to head off to grandmommy and granddaddy's house. Not sure what that says about us. It probably helped that their grandparents spoiled them rotten. :rolleyes1

As my kind, caring, compassionate wife would say, "Who cares! That's not my problem! We won't have the kids! Let's go!" :car:

Not that I disagree with this sentiment.

Daddy-O? Who's that? :lmao:

I figure I will just go along for the ride....:rotfl2:

Well, if you want, we can take over.

As DisneyDaddy-O

...So after we pulled our kids out of school for this trip, we brought along last year's resort mugs to fill up. We pool hopped most of yesterday morning. Then we went to the Magic Kingdom, where we told them my 5 year old was still 2 so we didn't have to buy him a ticket. He's only 36" tall, so we stuffed his shoes with 4 inches of paper towels so he could go on Splash Mountain. Our Fast Pass was for 1:05-2:05, but we used it at 4:30 anyway. Wow, what a fun day...
