The expression "Hands Down" is it just me?

Ok I have to admit, I just get so amused when I see the expression "hands down" when someone expresses their opinion about a resort, restaurant, or attraction.

Examples would be. Someone will say hands down Le'Cellier is the best restaurant in WDW. Where another will say hands down, San Angel Inn is the best, while another will say hands down, Ohana. Same with resorts, hands down with WL, or hands down GF, or hands down AKL. Hands down Deluxe is better than value.

It's not hands down, if it were hands down,we would all be in agreement. Hands down we all agree we are going to die, that is hands down. Ok, now that I vented I feel better. :rotfl:

It's just people expressing their opinion. Even without the "hands down" expression they are still suggesting it is the best, worst, etc which is subject to your own personal view. Hands down just emphasizes their opinion.

I agree, just a way to give THEIR opinion. So many people on the boards ask, "What is your favorite______?, and there is always a difference of opinion since we're all individuals. My Grandpa used to say, "That's why they make chocolate ice cream". We all have different tastes...;)

Where did that expression come from anyway? It's very much an idiom, as I would have a very hard time explaining why we say that to a non-native speaker!

It's from horse racing. When a jockey was sure he would win, he would relax his grip and drop his hands down.

In all my years on these boards I've never read the saying "hands down"

I do see lots of :thumbsup2 when people are rating things.

I should say in no way does the expression bother me, I just find it humorous. I personally didn't know the origin of the term, but still seems to be a factual statement as opposed to an opinionated statement. :goodvibes

Looks like I'm going to be in the minority here, so I'll get my fireproof suit on.

LOL...Love your outfit! :rotfl: Seems we all need to don one of those on occasion here on the DIS.

And to the PP re: where the term "hands down" actually comes from...thanks for the info! I learn something new here on the DIS all the time! :goodvibes

Does not matter haw you phrase it, it is still junt an opinion and we all have one. JMHO:rolleyes1

I laughed when I read the post title because I agree with you. I hardly ever heard of the expression until I started reading on the DIS boards. Maybe it's said more often in different areas of the country. :confused3

I used to think it meant "This is the best. There's no point in voting on it. So hands down."

Yeap! It does not imply an uncontested victory it implies a victory made with ease. As such when someone uses it to express an opinion it does NOT mean
that everyone should agree as the OP suggests, it merely means for the person expressing the opinion the choice of best is one that they had made easily.

Off topic for a sec. To the OP... I love your Lebron sig :rotfl2:

lol, ok...i hear ya :)

In general there are a few phrases that I find humorous as well (but not for any particular reason, they just bother me!). My sister for instance. You cannot have a conversation with her without her saying "I go". Instead of her saying "I said" she'll use this phrase. She will be rambling on about anything and those two words always seem to make their way into her speaking. My nieces words of choice are " the thing is". And-- the thing is-- I find stuff like this funny :P

You at least are amused by something that in reality doesn't make much sense. I am simply just amused by the way some people talk just cuz!

Thank you, "hands down" he is a quiter, egotistical, self centered and Wade's Pippen. :lmao:

See all, I have this hands down thing all figured out. LOL

It's similar to me as someone saying "without question" or "undeniably". I see it as someone wanting to really stress that they feel a certain way and not that they think everyone else is wrong.

Even if everyone else is truly wrong. Hands down. ;)

I havn't heard that in years and I don't know that I've ever seen it on here. Anyone remember the board game from the 80's called Hands Down? I loved that game!

No flames.

It's just an expression.
It's no different that someone saying
The #1 resturant is...
The best place is..
The top....
The scariest ride is....
