I don't see how it is. If it was never brought up I would have had no clue that he was Gay and what does it really matter anyway if he was.

I think it was because it could put a whole new perspective on him and Grindlewald and when they were fighting each other.
And I thought it was nice to know that Dumbledore really did have someone he cared about and loved. :]
