:wave2:Hello everyone!
First of all, for those of you who are interested, I invite you to read my pre-trip report (or pre-food report if you will). There’s a little bit of background on who we are, as well as why we are the Dynamic Dieting Duo. But to make it short, I’m Yummy, and my DGF is MarieLune. We went to WDW from August 21st to 28, staying at All-Star Music, with free Quick Service Dining Plan. It happened to be our 8-year anniversary, but wasn’t planned as an anniversary trip. We didn't even wear our anniversary buttons, because we're a bit shy, and didn't want every CM to wish us happy anniversary.

This was our 3rd 7-night stay at ASMu on QSDP in 15 months. Yeah, you might say we’re a little crazy (some of our families, friends and colleagues sure do!) :rotfl: Since it was our 3rd time on the QSDP, and since I’m addicted to the DIS, we knew our way around the plan, so I thought it’d be nice to share with you all what we ate in counter services places as well as snacks (the best thing about the QSDP!). I know some people worry that the QSDP is not enough food, but to us it is plenty (you’ll see!), even a little too much.

By the way, MarieLune and I like to share our food, so you’ll notice in our food review that we often buy just one meal at a time. We’ve been doing that since our first trip, and it works great for us. We much prefer to eat less, but more often, even more so in the August heat and humidity. There’s nothing worse than being hot, sweaty AND stuffed (as we’ll demonstrate a little later on in our report :sad2:). Speaking of the heat and humidity, here is what we learned on this trip: NEVER. AGAIN. IN. AUGUST. We knew it would be hot and humid, and thought it wouldn’t be that bad: after all, this being our third trip, we knew we wanted to take it a little easier and take our afternoon breaks. Well, that wasn’t enough. I know a lot of people love going in September for free dining, but I don’t like free food that much. Next time, we’re going back either in the Spring or early December. Anyway, we had to try it!

Here are the restaurants we ate at during our trip (not including all the snacks we got in between!). We managed to take pictures of almost everything (two or three exceptions) :

Day 1 – August 21st
- Starbucks (Montreal airport)
- Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn Café (Magic Kingdom)

Day 2 – August 22nd
- Intermission Food Court (ASMu)

- Columbia Harbour House (Magic Kingdom)

Day 4 – August 24th
- Intermission Food Court (ASMu)
- Starring Rolls (Hollywood Studios)
- Toy Story Pizza Planet (Hollywood Studios)

Next up : Arrival day! :woohoo:

Our flight from Montreal was at 9:15am, with a layover in Detroit. It was our first time travelling through Detroit, and definitely the last. We had to walk FOREVER to get from one gate to the other. There’s enough walking in WDW as it is! In comparison, the Charlotte airport (on our first trip) was the cutest airport, with rocking chairs lined up in front of the windows to look at the planes taking off, and the layout just seemed more efficient. Next time, for the price difference, I think we'll take a direct flight...

We usually like to fly early in the morning to get to Orlando early, but this time we had tickets to the Rogers Cup women’s tennis quarter-finals on Friday evening (which we’d bought many months before then), so we left Montreal three hours later than usual. We got back home past midnight Friday night, and left home for the airport at 5:30am so we had a pretty short night’s sleep. :faint:

Our food report starts with our Montreal airport breakfast, grabbed at the airport’s Starbucks :
21AUG_YULbreakfast.jpg

MarieLune had a cappuccino, blueberry muffin, and fruit yogurt parfait. I had a bottled strawberry and banana smoothie and a chocolate muffin. All were very good, and a nice way to start our day.

Paid OOP : 21,40$ (Canadian)

We arrived at the All-Star Music resort around 4pm. We grabbed our resort reffilable mugs, which are included in the QSDP (no picture of the mugs, but you’ll see parts of them on some of our breakfast pictures later on).
Value : 2 X 12.99$ = 27.98$ + tx

We then headed to the Magic Kingdom because, let’s face it, there’s no better way to really feel you’re in WDW! Also, there’s no better way to start a WDW vacation than to get a fantabulously delicious and refreshing Dole Whip float!

The weather wasn’t great, as it began raining not so long before we arrived at MK. We went to the Country Bear Jamboree to escape the rain. We hadn’t seen it before: wow, what a lame show! Sorry to those who like it, but we thought it sucked. Maybe because neither of us went to WDW when we were kids, so we don’t get the nostalgia… After that (or before: I forgot to take notes), went went for dinner at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn Cafe. We didn’t eat there before, usually preferring to eat at Cosmic Ray’s when in MK. However, I really wanted to try the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, and Cosmic Ray was a bit of a long walk from Frontierland in the rain.

21AUG_CS-12.jpg

MarieLune had a Taco Salad (beef) (7.69$), low fat milk (1.49$) and carrot cake (3.59$). I had the BBQ pork sandwich with fries (8.69$), bottled water (2.50$) and carrot cake (3.59$). MarieLune loved that she had to build her taco salad from the toppings bar. She got like an inch thick of sauteed mushrooms in the taco shell! She also got lots of shredded cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. For my part, I loved the sandwich! There was a bit too much sauce in it to my taste: the sauce is very sweet, so it almost felt like I was eating dessert! But the pork was fabulous, and the bun was actually not so bad. I’ve read a lot of people complaining that the new buns literally fall apart, and while it did feel very light, I was able to keep it under control. i also got some cheese from the toppings bar to put on my fries. Yum! The carrot cake was OK, nothing to write home about. There was way too much icing on them though, it was too sweet: MarieLune even scrapped off the icing on hers. I should have too… That's frankly the kind of dessert we wouldn't buy OOP were we not on the dining plan.

After dinner, the rain kept pouring. We were wet and tired, so decided to make it a night, and went back to our resort. We watched some tv in our room and went to bed early, because we knew we had a long week ahead of us!

Next up: The best roast beef sandwich in the world!

Hello fellow Montrealer!

Keep the reviews coming, great start!

I'm so jealous you were able to go down three times in a short time...

If you ever need a Disney buddy to reminisce from home, let me know!

Hi there gals!

I read your pre trip report and have been looking forward to this. Looks like it was worth waiting for.

My husband and I share meals as well. I am a recovering foodaholic (lost 140#'s so far) and while I enjoy trying new things a bite or two is enough and my husband is my chow hound.

The taco salad looks great. Do you get the basics and then you add what you want from the toppings bar or did they make it to order, Subway style?

great start. looking forward to the rest. we love starring rolls. have only had bfast so far but are thinking of trying lunch this trip. looks like you had a good variety.

Interested in your QSDP review!! It looks like you ate at the ASMu food court a lot! It must be really good. I can't wait to see what they have.

Maggie

:thumbsup2great start.
we usually eat at Cosmic rays too but hoping to try a few other places this time.

Thanks looking forward to another QSDP review. WE are on the QSDP this year and I'm excited about it.

My 14 year old healthy eating daughter and I are along for the ride. We just booked the Family Suites at ASMu during free dining in May 2011 and can't wait to read your reviews (and maybe get a few tips for how to eat healthy on vacation).

Bonjour! I'm actually a fake Montrealer, because I live on the south shore. It's just easier to say I live in Montreal, for our international friends :) It's a set of unplanned events and cirmunstances that have led to us going to WDW three times in such a short period of time. We're a couple with no kids, so that makes it easier to plan. We really were only supposed to go once, then go back with my parents sometimes in 2010. We ended up squeezing two trips in between, and my parents pushed our trip back to 2011! Now, the current plan is not to return to WDW until May or December 2011 with my parents (I'm trying to convince them for December, because it's cooler, and I loved the Christmas decorations and shows). We'll see if that plan holds! :rotfl:

Wow, congrats on the massive weight loss!!! I'm impressed :worship: MarieLune is now 2 pounds away from the 50 pounds mark, I'm so proud of her. I'm not making much effort, but still managed to lose around 10 pounds, though it doesn't show much (I did lose a couple of pounds during our trip! :rotfl2: )

I love sharing food too, because I like to sample a variety of foods, but feel full pretty fast. That's why I love it when restaurants have samplers, instead of full portions.

At Pecos Bill, when you take the taco salad, all you get is a fried tortilla bowl (I've seen people subsituting it for a regular plastic bowl: the tortilla tasted a lot like old frying oil, so I think I'd substitute it) with about an inch of ground beef. You build the rest of your salad at the toppings bar, so you could choose to fill it with shredded cheese if you wanted to!  From memory, you can choose from shredded cheese, sliced tomatoes, onions, sauteed mushrooms, pickles, salsa, shredded iceberg lettuce, plus of course the hamburger condiments. I wish there were black beans to complete the taco salad.

great start. looking forward to the rest. we love starring rolls. have only had bfast so far but are thinking of trying lunch this trip. looks like you had a good variety.

Welcome! I love Starring Rolls, but am not a fan of HS, so only get to go once per trip. They don't have much variety as far as entrees are concerned (only 2 sandwiches I think). However, they have a big selection of desserts, and they're all included on the plan! The big issue eating there is choosing dessert!

Interested in your QSDP review!! It looks like you ate at the ASMu food court a lot! It must be really good. I can't wait to see what they have.

Welcome! What I like most at the ASMu food court is the variety, the fact they let you substitute one drink for a snack when you use a CS for breakfast, and the dessert options which include the 5$ ice-cream cookie sandwich! Yum! One of the reason we eat there a lot though is that we rely only on WDW transportation, and don't like to ride the bus every time we're hungry. Also, we always eat breakfast at our resort, in order to make it to the parks for rope drop on a full stomach.

:thumbsup2great start.
we usually eat at Cosmic rays too but hoping to try a few other places this time.

Thanks! I'm a bit dissapointed we didn't eat once at Cosmic Ray this time around, because it really is a good value on the plan. However, we're not used to that kind of heat, and eating a lot of meat in that weather would have been a killer. We'll keep that for our next December trip, when we crave meat, jalapeno pretzels and warm glazed nuts!

Thanks looking forward to another QSDP review. We are on the QSDP this year and I'm excited about it.

I'm so used to doing the QSDP, I can't even imagine how it would be to have to have ADRs every day. We're considering the regular DDP when we go with my parents, but the extra planning probably won't suit the way we like to visit (or theirs for that matter). I think what really makes the QSDP worthwhile aside from the no need to plan is the extra snack per day and the refillable mugs.

My 14 year old healthy eating daughter and I are along for the ride. We just booked the Family Suites at ASMu during free dining in May 2011 and can't wait to read your reviews (and maybe get a few tips for how to eat healthy on vacation).

Welcome! There are definitely healthy options out there in WDW, it's just a matter of finding them, and NOT being tempted by all the other unhealthy options! To eat healthier, we tried to limit our soda consumption and replaced most of our drinks with water or low-fat milk. We also aimed for the sandwiches and salads, tried to stay away from fried food (though we did eat some), and ate fruit cups every morning (though we should probably have eaten more). I think we ate the healthiest out of our three trips so far, but still, could have eaten a lot healthier. However, we didn't want to take the whole fun out of our vacation!

Great start!
Thanks! Aiming to please my audience!

Hello everyone!
Before I begin with Day 2, I forgot in my Day 1 post to mention our lunch at the Detroit airport, since I have no pic for it. We were so rushed to board our Orlando flight (the plane was already boarding when we finally arrived at our gate, totally out of breath), I grabbed a delicious chicken philly melt sub and a bottle of water at Charley’s Grilled Subs, which we ate on the plane once our heart rate was back to normal (it smelled sooooo good, I’m sure everyone on our flight was salivating!).
Paid OOP : 11.65$

I also forgot to mention in my previous posts that English is not my first language, so while I am fluent in English, I sometimes make some grammar mistakes or dumb spelling errors. Please do not hesitate to mention it if I do at some point use an expression that doesn’t exist or makes no sense at all. Anyway, on with our review. :thumbsup2

It was our first time taking the Waterparks & fun option with our WDW tickets, so we decided to hit Blizzard Beach on Sunday morning. But first, we hit our resort’s food court for breakfast. We shared a French toast with chicken sausage plate (5.29$), a fruit cup (3.99$), and grabbed a bottle of water (2.50$) for later. I love that in value resorts, you can substitute one of your two breakfast drinks for a snack (fruit, fruit cup, pastry, yogurt, etc). It makes stretching the QSDP so much easier. As we did every morning during the week, we used our mugs for coffee for MarieLune, and a mix of hot chocolate and coffee for me (makes the Nescafe taste less bad).

So we hit Blizzard Beach right after breakfast. We’re not big waterslide fans, so we just sailed the lazy river, rode the family raft ride a couple of times, and cooled off in the wave pool. Based on what was suggested by some on this board, we made a stop for the mini donuts stand and bought 6 mini donuts, and also got a mango smoothie (4.19$) to wash them down:

22AUG_snack2donuts.jpg

I love the smoothies on a hot day. For some reason I don’t understand though, there are no straws available in the water parks, so we had to eat our smoothie with a spoon. Not the most efficient way to “drink” a fast-melting smoothie. Still, it was delicious and refreshing: I haven’t found a WDW smoothie I didn’t like, and I think we tried every single flavour during this trip! :cloud9: Also, I had said we wouldn’t pay OOP for anything, but we did make an exception for the donuts, because they just smelled too good, and we decided we could afford 3.75$ and not feel guilty about it.

We left Blizzard Beach around noon, stopped by our resort to drop off our pool gear, then headed for Downtown Disney. We shopped a bit, but mostly went for lunch. Because of the heat and humidity, we weren’t hungry enough to go to Wolfgang Puck Express for a full lunch, so instead decided to go to Earl of Sandwich, our first time ever. The line was super long, so we almost turned away. However, the line seemed to be moving pretty fast, so we did stay, and it didn’t take that long. Definitely don’t let the length of the line at Earl of Sandwich scare you, it looks worst than it is. MarieLune held a table while I ordered. I chose the sandwich I see most recommended on this board, The Original 1762 (5.99$), which is fresh roast beef and horseradish. To go with it, I got a chocolate pudding (1.99$) and a bottle of water (2.50$) :

22AUG_CS-4.jpg

Wow. This was THE best roast beef sandwich ever! There was lots of meat in it, and it really tasted fresh. I know it will not sound right, but it tasted bloody, as in freshly cooked and just carved from the roast. The horseradish paired with the roast beef was superb, and the bread was great. We should have eaten there before! The chocolate pudding was good, but in retrospect, I think I should have gotten one of their yummy-looking fruit cups instead (which contain more than just cantaloupe, grapes and honeydew! Lol). It’s definitely a must-do restaurant in Downtown Disney.

After our satisfying lunch, we window-shopped a bit, then went back to our resort for a quick nap, and a little snack, in the form of a strawberry milkshake (4.19$) at our food court. Those milkshakes are so thick! I think they put like 3-4 scoops of ice cream, with just a tiny bit of milk, just the bare minimum to be able to mix it :

After our mid-afternoon break, we decided to hit Hollywood Studios to try to catch Fantasmic!. There were two shows that night, so we only left our resort past 7pm. Since it’s a well-known fact that there’s no good CS place to eat in HS (except Starring Rolls, which only opens for lunch), we elected to have dinner at our resort food court, which is unusual for us. They have lots of choices for entrees, and we can take whatever we like as dessert, including milkshakes, brownie sundaes and ice cream cookie sandwiches.

MarieLune decided to go with beef for a second time that day, with the dinner special : marinated grilled beef with corn and rice sides, and a roll (9.99$). I went with the chicken dinner, which consisted of a baked half (small) chicken with green beans & cranberry salad and zuchini salad, with a roll (9.69$). Both entrees were good, and generous portions. There were maybe 6-7 choices of sides, so a nice variety. To complete our meals, we each got low-fat milk (1.49$ each), and for dessert, we got one small dessert (yogurt parfait 4.29$) and one big dessert (ice cream cookie sandwich 4.99$) :

22AUG_CS-56.jpg

22AUG_CS-56_dessert.jpg

(btw, sorry for the picture size difference: I began saving my pics a little bigger starting from there, so the food is more visible)

A word of warning: stay AWAY from the resorts yogurt parfaits you see in the picture above! They are disgusting! The cereals are already mixed with the yogurt, so the texture is yucky, like cold lumpy oatmeal. We’ll definitely never take that again, it was a waste of dessert. At least, we couldn’t go wrong with the ice cream cookie sandwhich, which was just as good as I recalled. I was to eat sort of healthy, so I actually had it made with the no-fat vanilla ice cream. It tasted so good and creamy, I actually suspect they put regular ice cream and just change the label on it ;-)

We were full, so we rolled our way to Hollywood Studios. We may have ridden a couple of rides, I’m not even sure, my memory is a bit fuzzy. We grabbed a strawberry-banana smoothie in front of Rock’n’ Roller Coaster :

We had no problem seeing the second showing of Fantasmic!, which was about 3/4 full. It’s a good show, but in my opinion not worth standing in line for over an hour to see, unless it’s your first time. We went to bed later than we like to, and planned to sleep in a bit the next morning. After all, vacations are supposed to be to recharge our batteries, right?

Next up: Day 3 - Tonga toast, queasiness and a talking rat

Can't wait to read more! We had the QS plan in January and we will do that from here on out! It is a a ton of food (especially with two kids that eat half their snacks and hand it to us!).

I look forward to seeing more choices so we can get the most from our plan!

I am definitely getting the taco salad at Peco Bills.

I just love having something unique to eat, a bite of this, a bite of that. ;)

Last time we were at DS we found that Min & Bills has a pretzel hot dog that was something different and quite tasty. Other than Starring Rolls we cannot find anything good to eat there either. Now that have done away with my beloved Millionaire we no longer spend much time over there anymore. You could get a milkshake to drink at M&B's as well. Our plan, this trip, is to get the food and get a seat over where we can watch the big screen for American Idol for the last show of the night, the best one IMO.

Great advice about getting a snack in place of one of the drinks for breakfast at Music. Wonder if it will work at Sports? Have to give that a try. They offer the biscuits and gravy for a snack point at all the Values now and that is a great way to start the day without using up too many points.

Thank you for the info on the taco salad. No oil laden taco shell for me. I use a low carb tortilla and drape it over an oven proof small dish, spray it with Pam and bake it for my own homemade and much healthier option.

I would hate to see how much better you would handle the English language if it was your native language. I was an English major way back when so I know a little bit of something, even if I no longer adhere to the principals so well any more. :rotfl2:

You are so correct in that the low fat ice cream will cancel out all the calories of those huge chocolate chip cookies. Okay, so it will not but all that walking will. I hope. :cheer2:

Hiya, welcome! I love the QSDP, and "sell" it to everyone I know who are planing a trip to WDW. It IS a ton of food, and I think people don't realize the difference that extra snack credit a day makes (especially if you end up having like 2 snacks a day plus 4 half-eaten snacks! lol)

If you take the taco salad at Pecos Bill, I would suggest not taking the taco shell, and getting a bowl instead. If you take the shell, you'll be tempted to eat it, and it'll make you sick because it's so greasy. Might as well avoid temptation! :rotfl:

Enjoying your reviews and pictures- looking forward to the next ones!:thumbsup2

Thanks for stopping by!

I don't know if Min & Bill's still have that hot dog. I know that back in May 2009, they had a spicy cheese pretzel, and didn't anymore in December 2009 (nor now). They do still have the milkshakes though.

I'm sure they'll let you sub a fruit cup for a bfast drink at ASSports. I've read people comment that they were not allowed to do this in some mods and all deluxes, but values don't seem to be an issue. However, biscuits and gravy? Yuck! I can't for the life of me figure out how people can eat that for breakfast. Must be an american thing

And don't go being tough on me about the low-fat ice cream! I did take one oatmeal and raisin cookie instead of two chocolate chip cookies, that's gotta count for something ;) Besides, there are no calories in WDW, it's a scientific fact. Neither of us gained any weight on that trip, and we didn't even walk that much (well, except in Detroit :rotfl2: )

I'm sure you'll love the QSDP! Regarding the second drink substitution, I mentionned on another thread a couple of months ago that we subbed the extra bfast drink for a fruit cup at ASMu, and some people said that they were not allowed to do this in some mod and deluxe resorts. The best thing is always to ask the CM beforehand. They do seem to allow a lot more substitutions in the values though.

I have to be honest, I thought how exciting can qs be? LOL!

So glad my review can help! I'm really doing it to give back, because all I learned about WDW food, I learned reading dining reviews right here on the DIS board. It's been a tremendous help seeing what the portions look like, where to get the best of this or the best of that, what places to avoid (ABC Commisary anyone? :rolleyes1), etc. And let's not forget the food porn! The pictures may not be as exciting as TS meals with their fancy presentation, but it's fun nonetheless :)
