The Duggar's did a vow renewal?!

There was one episode where a couple of the older girls were cleaning their parents' bathroom, and mentioned the high amount of hairspray residue left by Jim Bob. Why can't Jim Bob clean that muck himself? I've heard he uses tons of the stuff. Just wanting to look good in front of the cameras, I guess. Sure hope his excessive use of hairspray doesn't make him appear (gasp!) "gay" or anything! Unbelievable.

I won't do this anymore. I am sorry I just do not see the issues here.

And I'm not stupid, they don't live on a farm. Just saying that there are a lot of kids who do more than the average suburban or urban child does (or more than I did) because that is what it takes to run a house efficiently. Though starting at 17 if there was any meal to be made in the house for my family I did it. So I have no issues with kids cooking for the entire family.

I just don't think people should judge based on things they don't watch. And if you do watch and dislike them that's fine with me but just because someone is different doesn't mean it is wrong. I'm not sure what traditional families people have seen but this is exactly like what I have known.

I didn't think that the kids were that misbehaved consdering. I wouldn't dream of bringing my young ones to a store like that, but what TLC wants they get.

There was an issue with a time on it, so they had to use sample dresses only. Not easy to find something modest for a lady who is pregnant.

I have a feeling OP you dislike the Duggars. I guarantee though this was a TLC push not a Duggar push.

But the Duggars agreed to do it! So - not a 100% TLC thing. Hey - this family agreed to let TLC film and pay them for doing so! They could have said NO...but they didn't! How can you possibly "guarantee" this was a TLC push? Jim Bob has said (bragged) that his family has no debts. Well, of course they don't! TLC has been paying them a lot of money for years! He's said that their source of income is a couple of rental properties (which he inherited) and a used car lot???? Oh, please! This family made a personal choice to part of TLC, and knew they would be getting paid. They've married off the oldest, Josh, who moved into an "existing" 3-BR home. Don't think Josh paid a dime. They've only got 18 more kids to marry off over many, many years, and don't think their TLC contract will last that long. Who do think is paying for the Duggars to re-locate to Little Rock to be near their tiny, tiny preemie? TLC! So, dis TLC all you want, but they are the ones paying for this - not the Duggars! I'm not a big fan of TLC, and think they're all about making money. But so are families (like the Duggars) who sign contracts with them. Even Kate G. admitted that was why they signed with TLC - they couldn't afford to take care of their 8 kids!

Sorry to rant...........

No one here is judging traditional families. It's one thing to do chores, clean, cook, look after yourself- those things are expected- but it's another to take care of a household and small children! That is all I'm saying.

Only time will tell whether they did a good job with their chosen parenting system. The lot of us are just sharing our thoughts on a discussion board.

Do not forget that TLC is making millions off of the Duggars.
I must say that I do not like the way the older children have to help with the younger ones. My cousins come from big families and they are still resentful that they had to care for the younger ones because my aunt kept having more kids. That is why none of them have more than 2 kids.
I like Michelle, its Jim Bob that annoys me, he is always looking for publicity. Does anyone remember when they went to speak at a University, and he had a huge pile of their books to pass out to the students. He also did that when he met Kirk Cameron. Any chance he gets to plug their book he does it.

And TLC is also paying the Duggars a ton of money! Michelle is just following that stupid "women have to be subserviant" baloney, because she probably doesn't know any better. She was what...17 or 18 when she married? Jim Bob annoys a lot of people! His over-sprayed hair wouldn't blow out of place during a hurricane. Have you ever seen him sweaty or with dirty fingernails? What, exactly, does he actually do??? He picks up a baby once in awhile - on camera. Uses tons of hairspray. His daughters do his laundry and clean his bathroom. Before TLC picked this family up, they were living in some dismally small 3-BR house (which he inherited). Then, JB ($$$$$) signed a contract with TLC. Suddenly, (with ample help from TLC), they are self-building (yeah, right!) this great big house! Sorry - this guy takes total advantage of the females in his life! Oh, wait! "God" said it was OK!!! Geez...whatta guy!

Don't forget that Kate (John and Kate) bougt her VR dress there too.

Is it me or was Michelle's dress ugly? Come on, but Jim Bob wanted it to have puffy sleeves and then there was the modesty issue. If you've had that many kids why be so modest (IMO). She should have either made it herself (like Anna's) or gone to a thrift store. I'm sure she would have found one that she likes that way.
I caught a few minutes of that show, and I also thought her dress was butt-ugly! It looked like she was wearing a white tee-shirt under a wedding dress. At first I thought she had just neglected to remove the white-tee she'd been wearing during the day, which made no sense . . . but then I realized it was part of the dress!

I understand that modesty was important to them, but it's very possible to find an attractive dress that isn't overly "showy".
I am glad you support working women. I just don't think it is fair to put someone down for running a traditional household. Personally I think work is good for kids. And it is not like they are totally running the house for her. The ADULT children can when needed but they don't have to.
Working around the house IS good for kids. Way too many kids today have no idea how to wash a load of dishes or cook a meal. The real question is, "Where do you draw the 'this is the appropriate amount of work for a child' line?" It's awfully hard for any of us to know just how much the kids do vs. what the parents do -- it's hard for us to make that judgement based upon a TV show that's largely scripted.
And TLC is also paying the Duggars a ton of money! Michelle is just following that stupid "women have to be subserviant" baloney, because she probably doesn't know any better.
If you read the whole chapter in the Bible instead of just the 1-2 verses about women being subserviant, you'll see that that deal actually works out pretty well for women. The very next lines command men to "love their wives as Christ loved the church". (There are instructions for men concerning their children and servants too.) If a man's really doing that, where's the problem? If everything he does is genuinely for the betterment of the family and to make his wife happy, then there's not much problem with letting him be the head of the household. But for that to work, BOTH SPOUSES have to buy into the concept and live it.

And it doens't take much looking around today to see that modern America's approach to marriage isn't working out too well. Too much pride, too much "it's gotta be my way", too much materialism; we see the results all around us in divorce, broken homes. Whether you like or hate the Duggars, they are well matched. They don't have to be OUR IDEA of a good marriage -- but they do have to be ONE ANOTHER'S IDEA of a good spouse.

I'm waiting to see just how the kids live their life after they leave home.

I was raised on a farm. We had chores just like every other kid raised on a farm - up at 5am on school days, work your tail off 365 days a year. Work 12 hour days on the weekends. I left home at 17, moved 300 miles away and haven't looked back since. One sister is the only one to stick around my hometown. The rest of us bailed as soon as we were old enough to support ourselves. I return home a few times a year to visit, and DO NOT work the farm while I'm home.

I also decided long ago that I'm okay with my kids getting part time jobs when they are older teens, but there's no way they are working like I did. I'm wondering how many of the Duggar kids are going to run for the hills when they can.

Servants? Huh? JB may treat his wife well (because she's usually pregnant), but he sure allows his daughters to do a lot of work that he should be doing!! His daughters are the real servants! Ever see any of the older boys cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, brushing little ones' teeth, etc? Please don't tell me that this is an "ideal" marriage! I never used any of my kids (or my spouse) as a servant. That term within a family is just plain offensive and insulting!

Actually, the Duggars were building that house before they started up with TLC. It took something like 3 years to build it because they were paying for it themselves and doing alot of the labor as well.

Oh, really? I saw an episode where Jim Bob said something like that. I didn't believe it at the time, and I don't believe it now. Only took a couple of episodes before TLC finished it for them. $$$$$$$$ talks!
