I'm getting soooo many mixed times on how long it takes to drive from Birmingham Alabama to WDW. I've heard 12 hrs...10 hrs...14 hrs...and now I printed out driving directions from map quest and it has just a little over 9 hours. Has anyone driven from b'ham or anywhere close to it.

It will be me, My husband and my DS who is 2. We usually stop once or twice in a 3-4 hour span to go to the BR and let my son stretch his little legs a bit.

a few times and it usually works about the same. With us stopping for lunch, gas, breaks, etc,, it usually takes us between 10 and 11 hours. You have to figure in traffic, road construction, etc. that can add time on the trip. We usually go through Atlanta on the way down (when it is a weekend) and back up through Troy/Montogmery on the way back. Coming back can take a little longer but you avoid Atlanta.

Have a great trip! We will be making the trip (hopefully) in October.

It looks like mapquest has us going through troy. (this will be our first trip driving...so I have to have step by step directions.) We have decided to make the trip in two days.

I hope you guys have a great time in October!!!

We drive from HSV and it only takes us 9.5-10 hours. Don't go south to I-10 and then east as it will take you much longer (from experience). Your best bet is I-20 to Atlanta, take the ATL bypass to I-75 south and then just go!

on our last trip some relatives drove from Tuscaloosa and we drove for New Orleans. We met up in Florida (not in Orlando but before the turnpike). They beat us there by a good hour. It takes us from New Orleans about 10 hours. If they wouldn't have waited for us for and hour they would have gotten there in 9 hours. But I do think my aunt used some Highways and not all Interstate. Have fun

you can do it in 9 hours - if you only stop for gas.....

with a child forget it.

It only takes me 12 hours when Spicey, my cat, is awake - he knows each and every rest stop - and will tell me about it if I miss even one.... :rotfl: all the way until the next rest stop. :guilty:

but only when he is awake...

10 hours is generally enough if everyone else is sleeping - you get an half hour for meals, and another half hour for the rest stops....

I don't like going through Atlanta - my brother lives in Stockbridge, GA - so we go over there alot - I 20 can be awful, and I 285 has so many wrecks...
not to mention all the construction now - someone else says they have closed all but one lane on I75 in South Ga....

take I65 to I85 (montgomery) get off on exit 9 - turn right - when this roads deadends you will be on US 231. turn left.

I would stick on this route until you get to I10 in Florida - it has rest stops - traveling with a child you will need rest stops. You can get to I10 in around 4 to 3 1/2 hours from Birmingham.

don't turn off of US 231 until you get to I10.

my other short cut is at the end - get on the Florida turnpike - about 8 miles take the first REAL exit off - pay your $1.00 - then turn right - you are now on US 27. about 22 (28??) miles down this road will be a right turn (not left) to US 192. (on us 27 you will go through 2 small towns).

on US 192 (get in the middle lane) you will pass on the left - a publix - then some hotels, Orange Lake - then at 2 lights pass Orange Lake and another publix (get in the left lane) - is Black Lake road - the sign is above the traffic lights - turn left - this road will deadend at Sherbert Rd - turn left - at the next traffic light - turn right - you are now on WDW property (turning left at this light will be AKL) - follow the signs to the theme parks closest to your resort.

to come back this way look for the AKL (not ak).

of course I don't travel during busy times - I leave around midnight to 4 am in the morning - Mother once decided it was better to leave around 10 pm - bad, bad mistake - we got there around 5:30am - nothing at WDW was open....

I am better off driving at night - the Florida sun can be bad.

forgot buy gas in Dothan, then do what I learned here - find a stop with a bunch of gas stations -especially the cheap brands - stop there for gas - except to pay the most for gas along I10.

the turn off to I75 is about 2 miles past the rest stop (there are around 5 on I10) - then and only then will you start to see the signs for I75.

Princess - you're going to get a lot of different answers based on everyone's past experiences. A lot of it will also depend on what day of the week you are driving.

We just drove to WDW last month going to ATL and using the bypass. In all our years (we spend lots of weekends in ATL as well), we have never experienced a wreck on 285 but we have occasionally on I-20. We have experienced construction delays on I-75 but most of the time they weren't working on weekends.

poohj80 - you don't know how luck you are....

my brother claims that I75 and I285 have so many wrecks that they don't even make it to the TV....

this one did - two 18 wheelers and about 5 cars - the wait was for 2 hours - but Altanta definitely gets their interstates clearly quickly.

if this wreck happen in AL it would have taken 5 to 8 hours to clear it.

If not overnight! :rotfl:

Again, I think a lot of it depends on day and what time of day. We are usually going by ATL on I-285 before 10 AM.

we have done it numerous times and the fastest way for us is out 280 toward Auburn--then get on 85 for just a litle then cut through Georgia below Atlanta--can't tell you definite way--my dh does the driving, but this is fast! we happened on it by accident last june when we had to drop my son off at my moms--quick weekend trip for dh and i--made it --withoust kids mind you in 8 hours--stopped several time for gas--sat down and ate at fast food--it is so nice to avoid Atlanta--plus you are having a pretty scenic trip but it is not two lane--check out a map--highloy recommend--going through Atlanta with kids takes us 11--same with troy way

willory - it looks like 27 then 280 - but there is not alot of rest stop on this road.

just depends upon what you want.

OT, but we're moving up to your neck of the woods! We close on our house in Madison in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to be living near a Disney Store! :)

Princess-rn, we live in Troy and it generally takes us about 9-10 hours including meal and rest stops (and we travel with kids). So I guess you could add about 1 1/2 hrs. to that for your trip so long as you don't hit Montgomery at a bad time. I agree with Spiceycat about taking 27 to 192 - we discovered that route a few trips ago and found it to be much easier to come into Kissimmee from the west rather than going through Orlando. Hope this helps. :)

We drive through Birmingham (coming in via 72) from Memphis on route to Orlando. It takes us 13 hours door to door from our house to Disney, and we can be in Birmingham in about 3.5-4 hours from our house depending on the time of day, so I can't imagine it taking longer than 9-10 to Disney when you start in B'ham. We unfortunately always seem to hit B'ham during rush hour and it takes an entire hour to get from the NW to the SE side. We go down through Troy to I-10 through Tallahassee. We go the same route through B'ham to Montgomery and then down one of those tiny highways when we head to the beach, too--Seagrove Beach which is between Destin & Panama City--that's a 9 hour drive for us.

edited to add: We have 2 small children who are 4 & 5 now, but made this trip to Orlando with them at 3 & 4 and trips to the beach every year sometimes twice a year since they were born. They don't seem to add too much time to our travels. They are good travelers. We've had some incidences of carsickness and the like that slowed us down a bit but we generally make really good time.

Sorry to disappoint you, but our Disney Store isn't all that great any more unless you have young children. DH used to be able to do all his Christmas shopping there but now complains that he has to actually plan ahead now because our store is nothing but kids stuff. ;) The worst thing is that our local store lost some of the wonderful cast members that we enjoyed visiting with when The Children's Place took over.

There is at least one other DISer in Madison so maybe we'll have to organize a meet or something. What brings you to town - NASA or Army? ;)

If you decide to come thru Atlanta, call the GA-DOT and try to find out if they are doing any construction on ANY of the interstates you will be driving that day and time. I-75 has been bad for several years about doing construction South bound....hopefully they are finally finished.
You never know what you will be up against. If you think the drive time may only be an hour or so different by taking back rodes, then I'd vote - back rodes or US Hwys. Enjoy the scenery and the small towns of America! You might actually make better time!

Im in Lexington AL (which is 2 hours north of b'ham)and when we went in 2000 it took us 13 hours driving to DW. But we also had a then 2 and 4 year olds....LOL My sister lives in b'ham and they flew, and it took them only 45 minutes, so we are planning on flying next year.

Southwest may still have their cheap fares too and they fly non-stop to Orlando.
