The Double-and-a-half Trippie ** COMPLETED **

So we waited. For once, we had time to get some breakfast.
2 teas and 1 croissant, 8.5 euros (about $12).
And they say food at Disney's overpriced ???

:scared1: Holy Moley. Is it so high because you were near the airport or is food priced that high all over France. For 12 bucks hubby and I can each have a nice sized breakfast out.

Marvaid-they have "Grumpy" christmas hats up at laughingplace now-I thought of you.

Hi Marina! How are you?! So, have you made any more changes to your Christmas trip??? :santa: It'll be here before you know it! :yay:

All caught up and waiting for more! popcorn::
Take care,
Michelle

Hi, new reader here! I couldn't sleep tonight and found your TR--where has this been? I've really enjoyed your saga so far! Now I have to try to go back to sleep (4 a.m. here), but I'll be looking for more updates!

Welcome !!! I can use all the new readers I can get :)

:scared1: Holy Moley. Is it so high because you were near the airport or is food priced that high all over France. For 12 bucks hubby and I can each have a nice sized breakfast out.

It's an airport thing. I thought I was going bonkers when I saw the bill!

Marvaid-they have "Grumpy" christmas hats up at laughingplace now-I thought of you.

Oh brother... now I'm going to have to get her that ! And you know I'll just have to get that Christmas tree hat with Stitch on it,too.

Did I miss the Bon Jovi part yet??? Tell us more!

Not there yet, sorry, I haven't been feeling in a trip-reporty mood lately. But I'll work on it this weekend, so I can finally get to the Disney part!

Hey there Michelle, I was just reading your TR. And yep I made some changes.. because of YOU !:rotfl: After seeing your review of Kona breakfast, I canceled 'Ohana and got Kona instead. Also for Christmas Eve dinner we're now going to Crystal Palace. Apart from that everything is more or less the same :)

Failed Experiments

The next morning, it was still raining cats and dogs outside, and so we did the only thing we could think of.. we went SHOPPING !

It was so early when we got to Pier 17 that some of the stores were not even open yet. Grumpy saw Victoria's Secret and ran in. I hate that store. Probably because I love everything they have in there, and can't fit in any of it. :headache:
Anyway, this morning we dressed Grumpy from head to toe. See, I have a degree in Advanced Grumpish Apparel. She will say "no,never,no" to any outfit I show her, I will bully her into buying it, and she'll wear it until it falls apart. :rolleyes1

We ran away from the mall when they started to do a Hairspray show in the food court :scared1:

Before we left, I had begged Grumpy to go to Jekyll & Hyde Club. She flat out refused, saying that we were doing quite enough silly and overpriced meals in Disney. But it was still in the back of my mind.Towards the front.

We'd come home fairly early, and had spent the afternoon waiting for the rain to stop. It didn't. Around 6, I told Grumpy that I'd had enough of that room and can we please go out ; it's not like we're going to melt. This was our one and only night together in New York, as the next day I'd be in Jersey, and we would leave the day after that.

So we left and did some shopping on 34th street. It had stopped raining, finally, but there was still no visibility for the Empire State. And then Grumpy said, "What was that silly place you wanted to go to again?".
I didn't even let her finish, just pushed her into the first bus that came our way, and off we went to Jekyll & Hyde !!

I completly forgot to take pics, but you can see some pics on their site :
http://www.jekyllandhydeclub.com/home.htm

We got lucky and barely had to wait 10 mns to get a table. We were the only party of 2 in line.

We were taken inside, where a lady dressed all in black with a huge veil covering her face "welcomed" us in. The lights were almost off, and while we were waiting, the ceiling started coming down ! I, of course, grabbed my mommy's hand.. remember guys, I get scared in Haunted Mansion. And Stitch.
And Journey with Figment, but for totally different reasons.

Our table was in the Laboratory, which, our server explained, was where the failed experiments ended up. Figures that's where they would put us. :rotfl2:

This place was a hoot. All the servers are dressed up, there's some "entertainement" going on with Frankenstein and a skeleton falling off the ceiling, heads talking on the wall, the "characters" come and talk to you at your table etc... we had a great time.

It would have been even better if the food had been edible, but unfortunately it was not. And we didn't go for complicated stuff either, Grumpy had pizza and I had a chicken salad. The salad tasted bitter, and Grumpy's pizza was just gross.

But we're still glad we went, although if we ever do go back, we'll ask to be in the Library and we'd stick to burgers. If you're going to NYC and you or your kids are into funny/scary stuff, give Jekyll & Hyde a try!!

We took the bus back and since the sky seemed clear, decided to go see if we could see something from the top of the Empire State. It had a 60mns wait, but we thought it'd be a good way to get ready for Disney.

There's some construction going on so things are a little hectic. First you have to go in and buy your tickets. Once you have your tickets, you have to queue so you can put your stuff through a metal detector similar to what they have in airports (I was getting ready to take off my shoes when one guy told me it was not necessary). Then, a succession of queueing, elevators, and more queueing.

Finally we got to what I think was the 86th floor viewing area. The wind was sooooooooooo strong up there I could barely hang on to my camera. Grumpy lasted about 3mns outside before running back inside to a little shop. She's been to the Empire State about 10 times.

I took a few pics, then made the mistake of looking down. MAN this is high !!

Tomorrow, we turn into full blown tourists and then I make my way to the murder capital of the North East ...

New York is AWESOME
... but my heart is still in Jersey :)

Our goal today was to go to Ellis Island and see the Statue of Liberty. Why ? I have no idea. We've been to Ellis Island at least five times. Same for the Statue. I really don't know why we decided to turn ourselves into newbie tourists this time, but we did.. and I didn't hate it!

So, at 9am we were in Battery Park. And it was FREEZING. Knowing that I'd be spending the next 2 months in Florida, I had only packed T-Shirts and one sweatshirt. The day we left Grumpy had forced me to wear a fleece sweater thing that belongs to my sister. I was so glad to have it this morning.

The queue was already all the way around the park when we got there. They were also not selling tickets to go inside the Statue anymore. Oh,well. Been there, done that.

Our teeth were chattering as we queued, and once again had to have our purses scanned. But we finally made it on the boat.

IMG_2550.jpg

First stop, the Statue.

IMG_2557.jpg

IMG_2559.jpg

Lookin' good. The last time we were here, people were still allowed to go all the way up, inside the torch. After 9/11 they had to put a stop to that.

IMG_2561.jpg

How tiny is my Grumpy ???

IMG_2566.jpg

It was freezing cold on the island with a lot of wind so we didn't last very long. Basically we just walked around and went back on the boat, off to Ellis Island we go. We actually had a reason to go there, as my mom wanted to get some books for school (she makes the kids study American History in English, which is not in the program at all but her classes love it.)

IMG_2581.jpg

IMG_2580.jpg

Dude, this is wayyyyyyyyyy over the weight limit. Ever heard of Kipling ?!

Grumpy & I went to the shop to buy the books she wanted, plus some little things like pencils and small notebooks she uses as rewards for the kids who participate a lot in class. We got lunch, then headed back to the boat, who was called......

IMG_2572.jpg

A reminder of what was coming up for me that night :rockband:

Speaking of which, I wanted to get back to the hotel & get some rest before the concert. So, after a little squirrel time (mandatory if you go to Battery Park, these little guys will come right into your hands) we made our way back to the Wolcott.

IMG_2583.jpg

Around 5, Grumpy walked me down to Penn Station where I got my train to Jersey. I'm the type of person who gets lost very, very easily so the first thing I did when I came out of Newark Penn was to ask a guy with an orange vest where the Prudential Center was.
He looked at me like I was from another planet, then gently turned me around. There, in front of my face, was an enormous bright orange blinking sign that said BON JOVI >> on it. With arrows. Then I started noticing all the people in orange vests with BON JOVI PRUDENTIAL CENTER written on the back.
OK, I think I'm getting closer.

When I got to the Prudential Center there was a hugeeee line that went 3 blocks up the street. The doors weren't opened yet,and everyone was waiting outside. So I went in line and waited. And waited. The line behind me was getting longer and longer. Cars stopped and people yelled out their windows "What's the line for???" and the whole queue would yell out "BON JOVI!".

I was surprised at how many families and MEN were in line with me. In Europe, most of the audience is female in their 30s. Here, there were a lot of guys and a lot of families with children including the cutest little girl who was carrying a huge "Jovi rules my world" sign. Awwww.

Finally they opened the doors and we were allowed in.

Now, the tickets for these shows were crazy expensive. $300 plus fees for the good seats. I had gotten what I thought was a decent seat for $120. Unfortunately I had misjudged the size of the arena, big time. This thing was enormous. I went to my section and found my seat. I was right above the stage, which was great, but... it was so far up I could barely see a thing.

The opening act was Big & Rich, which I think are "country" folks. One of their back up vocalists is "Cowboy Troy". This guy is 6"5... and I couldn't see him.

Suddenly somebody plopped down on the stairs next to me and asked me if I was by myself. Yup, I said. Come with me, the girl replied.

Me I'm a good girl I do what I'm told. So I followed her. Turned out, she was one of the "seaters" at the arena and they were moving a few people, since some seats were available in better sections. And she moved me !! I ended up facing the stage. All the way in back, of course, but the stage was right in front of us. And in a lower section, too. Sooooo much better than where I was.

The guys came on stage and soon the concert began. They were incredible, as usual. Sorry, no pics. I don't bring my camera to concerts because if I do, I spend too much time taking pics and can't really get "into it".

I remember very little from the concert itself, don't know why but it's always like that for me with Jovi concerts. I get way too high on adrenaline and then can't remember a thing. All I know is that it was amazing, and I was really jealous of all the people who were going to come back and see ALL the concerts.

Here's the setlist ... drool !

The train to NY Penn was an hour away, so I had to wait. My feet were killing me from all the standing (there is NO sitting at a Bon Jovi concert!! Jon'll yell at you - seriously). Then I had to walk from NY Penn to our hotel.
It was 1.30am when I got to our room, plopped down on my bed and let out a huge sigh of relief.

You think Disney is tiring ?! Try a 3hr rock concert.

Speaking of Disney... we'll be there in less than 24 hours!!!!!

Hello, Helen!!!

Our last morning in New York. We went to Central Park... because it's free :)

IMG_2593.jpg

IMG_2595.jpg

IMG_2597.jpg

IMG_2598.jpg

IMG_2604.jpg

Our flight was at 5.30 that night, and we had a shuttle coming to get us at the hotel at 2pm. We walked around Central Park, bought a few T-Shirts, had lunch at the Brewery, and then we were ready to get to FLORIDA already!!!

Hey, Grumpy... tonight we'll be at Animal Kingdom Lodge
IMG_2606.jpg

We shared our Shuttle with 4 guys. They talked about sports the whole time we were in. I pretended to be interested for about 3mns, then put on my headphones. The flight was uneventful. We landed on time, then walked down to the Welcome Center.

Grumpy & I had a little argument about where the Welcome Center was. I said it was on the B side. She said that we could go down to baggage claim on the A side and then walk to the B from there. So, we took the escalator down. A lady in Mickey uniform was there, so I asked her which way the Welcome Center was. She told us to go back up and walk to the B side. I smacked Grumpy upside the head, and we went back up.

I forgot to say that Grumpy had a slight cold before we left Paris. By the time we left New York, she couldn't talk. She doesn't cough or sneeze or anything like that, her voice just goes away for a day or two.

As we got close to the welcome center I started looking for some restrooms. I know how that thing works now. You give them your ticket and they wisk you off on that bus so fast, there's no time for "emergencies".
So I found some restrooms and told Grumpy I was going in. When I came out, she was sitting in the waiting area. Panicking. As she tried to explain, only a few words were actually coming out.
"Where ... you go ??? We ... walking and I .. look.. behind me, and you ... gone!!".
"Mom, I was in the bathroom. I told you I was looking for some. I told you I was going in."
"I ... not hear you.Where ... buses?"
"There's five of them right behind you."

She can't talk, she can't hear, she can't see.
Great. I'm traveling with Helen Keller.

I've read some awful stories about DME, but for us it's the best thing since sliced bread. We never had to wait. This was our 3rd time using it and once again, the queue area was empty, we were put on our bus immediately and left within a couple minutes.

When we got to our bus, the driver took our carry-on luggage and I introduced my mother.
"This is Helen."
"Hello, Helen!!!"

and then we were on our way to the Animal Kingdom Lodge!!!

Will a giraffe greet us in ?

When we got on the bus, we were told that it would first stop at Pop Century, then Coronado Springs, then All Stars Movies and finally Animal Kingdom Lodge. In a nutshell, we were the last stop.

By the time we got to AKL it was about 10.30pm. We checked in, and were given a standard room on the 4th floor. The first thing I did was go straight to the balcony and see what kind of view we had, not expecting much since it was a Standard room. Parking lot ? Service area ?

Neither. Rain gutter.
And a really, really big rain gutter at that. So big that we could barely see over it. Well, we could see some cranes.

Maybe I should have gone back to the front desk right away and requested to be moved, even if it required us paying extra for a pool view or savanna room. Instead I just closed the door to the balcony and never bothered to open it again.

The room was beautiful though. Exactly like the photos I'd seen here and on AllEars. It was a bit smaller than our room at the Boardwalk, but because it was an Handicap-Accessible room, the bathroom was HUGE.

Grumpy & I had not had anything to eat since our early lunch in NY, so we left our room to explore the resort and find Mara. That was easy enough, once we figured out that the lobby was actually on the THIRD floor.
Mara was good, and after that we just went to sleep in our pretty African room. I wanted to make sure we'd be up bright & early the next day so we could get to AK before opening.

That didn't happen though. We didn't leave our room until 9.30, and in the bus I was making alternate plans. I'd seen AK at 10am before, and it ain't pretty.

Once we got to Animal Kingdom, I understood why so many people would never be caught dead in Disney the week after Christmas.

It was a little over 10am, and the wait time for Safari was.... 15mns.
You could have knocked me over with a feather !! I was expecting at least 60mns and all FPs gone, like it had been in December.

We made our way to Asia, and within a few minutes we were in our Safari truck. With FPs for seconds. And what an awesome Safari that was !
We'd been on the Safari before and while it had been nice, this one was soooo much better. I'll let the pics do the talking ...

last but not least, my favorite photo of this entire trip

IMG_2638.jpg

Not only was this Safari beautiful to see, it was also very funny. As we were looking at the hippos, one bird kept following one of them and trying to bite his tail, over and over again. It was like a cartoon and the whole truck was laughing. Then after we went on that bridge that almost collapses under you, our driver yelled "Anybody packed a change of pants for the driver???". Hilarious.
One guy sitting behind us was in awe. He kept saying "Why did these idiots tell me it was like a zoo ? This is not nothing like a zoo. So much better than a zoo. That ain't no zoo."

I'm pretty sure they got rid of the Little Red storyline, but didn't pay enough attention to be sure. There were way too many animals to watch.

Since we were in the area and still in "animal mood", we headed to the Pangani Forest Trail after the Safaris. While not as great as the safari, since the animals are farther, this was still really great. Again I'll let the pics tell the story.

... more coming later !

Wow, those pictures are amazing! Makes me rethink AK. We haven't been there since 1999! We plan to go in March with the kiddo.

:goodvibes How's it going we haven't heard from you in awhile. Hope to hear more soon.

Hi, I figured that noone was reading so I stopped writing LOL.. plus this thread is kind of a mess, I need to organize it a bit before I finish this TR.

In 3 days I'll be back in Disney for my solo trip & just can't wait!!

(Well, it's 4am here and I'm waiting on a Lifetime movie to begin.. thought I'd finish our first day in the meantime!!)

We left the animal trail not really knowing where we wanted to go, so we just walked. Somehow we ended up near the Festival of the Lion King and I asked Grumpy if we could go.

Sometimes Grumpy decides she will hate something, and refuse to have anything to do with it. Sometimes I force her, sometimes I don't. Festival of the Lion King was one of those things - she had decided that it had to be lame. I'm not that into shows myself, but I'd read so much about FOTLK on the DIS and I really wanted to see it.

Suprisingly, Grumpy agreed. I think she just wanted to sit down.

We made the mistake of buying drinks right before going in, only to have to dump them a few seconds later as they're not allowed in the theater. Grumpy, who has her Scrooge moments, decided she didn't want to waste her ice tea and drank the whole thing.

I didn't really know what to expect for FOTLK. I knew there was going to be fire, and looked forward to that.

The parade float things came in and our section was the hogs... figures!!

We both really enjoyed this show, and didn't expect it to be so good. The dancers were great, but the part we liked best was the singing, and of course the fire guy !!!

IMG_2667.jpg

IMG_2665.jpg

Most of my photos came out blurry. Unfortunately I still can't get decent "night" shots with my camera :(

Grumpy was squirming in her seat towards the end of the show.

"Don't you like it ??"

"Oh I do, it's really nice."

"Then what's your problem?"

"The ice tea wants out."

As soon as the show was over & the lights came back on, she bolted.
I didn't even try to keep up with her.

When she came back, she said she wouldn't mind getting some lunch now. We had a rather early (for us) ADR at Boma, so I suggested we share a CS meal somewhere. Pizzafari was only a few steps away.

We shared an extremely light and healthy meal : pepperoni pizza and cheesy breadsticks with an orange Fanta. Pizzafari is a fun place, and once again we were shocked at how fast & easy it was for us to get our food and find a table.

After lunch, I wanted to do Kali River Rapids but Grumpy didn't feel like getting wet, she was still having trouble talking and a very sore throat. She didn't want to go to It's Tough to be a Bug either. AK is one of the parks I didn't do a whole lot of research about, so I didn't know what else to do. We sat there for a few minutes trying to decide, then agreed to go back to AKL and either go the pool or look at the animals in the savannas.

Once we got back to the resort we realized it was raining. I still wanted to check out the savanna real quick. We crossed the lobby and went downstairs, hoping to see a giraffe somewhere.

No giraffe :( But we did see a few zebras' butts !!!

IMG_2671.jpg

IMG_2674.jpg

It started to rain harder so we went back to our room and relaxed for a little while. I think it was about 1.30 when we got to our room. At 2.15, I started begging Grumpy to please go back somewhere ! I really wanted to see the parade at AK. Grumpy said she wasn't in parade mood.

Would she mind if I went by myself ? (This ALWAYS works!)

As expected, with a heavy sigh she rolled off her bed and started putting her shoes on.

Grumpy doesn't like to be alone anywhere except in a hot tub.

We were back at AK by 3. I thought the parade was at 3.45, so we had time to do It's Tough to be a Bug first, but then we had to get moving and get a spot for the parade. First, a little stop to take some pics of the Tree Of Life (which by the way, I thought was a REAL tree until I saw a documentary last month).

IMG_2676.jpg

IMG_2679.jpg

ITTBAB had no wait at all. It was so empty, they weren't even giving FPs.

I love love love 3D movies. Hate bugs, though ! I totally didn't remember the spiders coming down from the ceiling and that freaked me out a little.
At the point where the bug stings you, it hurt like hell !!! Everyone was laughing but I yelled like someone had just stabbed me. Which technically is what happened. With a tiny tiny little stabbing device.

Grumpy made fun of me and I laughed too but still wondered why on earth it had hurt so much - not normal. The last time we were there, I hadn't even felt it. But I was busy having fun and just forgot about it.

We left ITTBAB and went to search for a parade spot. Grumpy refuses to sit on the ground. She insists on bringing "normal" clothes to Disney, while I stick to jeans that have to be finished (that means they're not ripped yet but will be before we leave).

She agreed to sit on a bench that wasn't very far from the rope, but by the time the parade started everyone was either sitting or standing in front of us and we couldn't see much. Luckily, most of the parade is "up there" and I have a good zoom.

Taking pics of the characters during parades is one of my favorite things to do at Disney :) I even have to remind myself that the characters aren't real. Grumpy just rolls her eyes at me when I get excited and scream "Donald waved at me!!!!!"

IMG_2697.jpg

(Donald waved at me!!!!!)

IMG_2704.jpg

IMG_2709.jpg

(And so did Mickey!!)

As soon as the last float came by, Grumpy & I got up and started to head towards Kilimanjaro Safaris. We still had our FPs from this morning and hoped we'd be able to use it.

It was raining lightly and we soon found ourselves trapped behind the parade ropes on the way to Asia. So we just stood there and enjoyed the parade - again.

This thingy (I have no idea what that is and what his name is) came to us, ruffled Grumpy's hair and high-fived me. Score !!!!

IMG_2716.jpg

The family of the day :

IMG_2715.jpg

We made it to the Safari and were in one of the last trucks of the day.
While this Safari wasn't as great as this morning, we still enjoyed it, mostly due to this little guy :

IMG_2729.jpg

He kept showing off and running around EXTREMELY FAST, coming back to where the truck was, and running all over again. Everyone thought it was so adorable, the driver said "Yes, buddy, we KNOW you can run."
The little dude did this 4 or 5 times, and he probably would have done it again but we had to continue our tour.

IMG_2730.jpg

The lions were awake this time, and roaring, but I couldn't get a photo of them. Maybe next time !

The park was closing, and we had to go back to our resort and get ready for dinner at Boma. What I didn't expect, is that so many people would be going to AKL. The line for our bus was three times as long as any other one. And people kept coming. It finally dawned on me that many of the people waiting must have had an ADR at Boma. Grumpy & I hate standing on buses, so we waited until almost everyone had left and then got in line.

It took close to an hour to get back to AKL which is only 5mns away - of course we could have been there faster if we had decided to get in line right away and "risk" standing up on the bus.

For some reason, every time we've had an ADR in the resort we're staying at, we're late. It never fails. We were 15mns late for Boma but didn't have to wait much at all.

I had mixed feelings about this place. We had booked it on both our previous trips and canceled both times. I knew Grumpy would love the food - the woman puts Wasabi sauce on peppers - the spicier (and weirder), the better for her. I intended to stick to the kids buffet but everything smelled so good I decided to try a few other things.

Cinnamon rice - yum !!!! Cole Slai - double yum !!!!

Everything was so good. I couldn't believe it. Grumpy kept saying we were idiots for canceling the first two times and I had to agree.

We rolled out of there and went back to our room. I thought Grumpy would have gone back to the pool right away, but she was afraid she'd sink :rotfl:

We chatted about our day, and then Grumpy said she didn't want to go to POP for the last 2 days anymore. Couldn't we stay here ? Well, it was worth a shot. We went back downstairs to the front desk and checked if we could possibly stay here instead, without losing our deposit for POP. Unfortunately, the resort was booked solid for one of the nights (Saturday).

Grumpy said, next time we're not splitting our stay. We're staying at one resort and that's it ! I didn't have the heart to remind her that we were going to change resorts THREE times in December....

Back in our room we started to get ready for the night. I pulled my shirt off and Grumpy let out a huge gasp. (Hey, not like it's never happened before. A lot of people gasp in horror when I take my clothes off.)

"Didn't you take a shower earlier ? You have black all over your back!! I told you not to sit on the floor for the parade."

Ok, first, I did NOT sit on the floor. And even if I had, how would that get dirt all over my BACK ? I didn't lie there topless and do snow angels for Pete's sake.

Upon closer inspection, it turned out the "dirty black" wasn't dirt, and it wasn't black either. It was a very dark and very big purple bruise. That explained the stabbing at ITTBAB.
I take steroids because of my asthma. Those things not only turn you into an hot air balloon, they also cause bruising. Last summer in Disney, I had smacked my arm into a lock in the bathroom next to Carousel of Progress, and for the rest of the week I had a perfect imprint of the lock on my arm - complete with key hole.

Grumpy complained that this bruise wasn't even funny. I apologized and swore I'd do better next time.

She fell asleep soon but I wasn't ready yet, so I went to take some pics of the lobby from our floor.

IMG_2741.jpg

My pics are pretty bad, but you can still see how pretty & relaxing this resort is.

The next day, we'd do the unthinkable - twice!!!!

Yeah! Updates! I'm still reading!

Have you tried Arnica for the bruising? It's good stuff and really does help with the pain and discoloration.

I love all the pictures - I love the stories! Keep them coming!

I just started to read your trip report and can't wait to get caught up! Sounds like a lot of fun! :thumbsup2

I'm so happy you've continued your trip report. Have fun when you go back. My parents are there now ,staying at POFQ and said it was pretty busy in the parks but all the decorations make up for it. You're pictures are great!:thumbsup2

I love your report, keep the updates coming. I also love using the "would you mind if I went alone" trick, always guilts someone into going back to the parks with me! :rotfl2:
