In our defense, it took us 84 years collectively to discover WDW.
Got a lot of catching up to do!

Our first trip was in December of 2006 and we fell in love. Crowds, cold and all. It was Epcot's Holiday decorations that did the trick. When the first thing you do when you enter a new place is stare wide-eyed,open-mouthed,for a good 10mns you know you've found something special.

The next trip was in July and we went "all out" since of course, it would be the last trip for a while and we wouldn't be coming back until I at least popped some kiddos of my own
One might argue that buying an Annual Pass and a DDE card is not exactly what someone who doesn't intend to come back would do.

Well, I love Halloween. And Halloween is France is about as popular as George W. Bush... just an example, guys...

Oh yeah I forgot to mention we're French. Please don't hold it against us, it's not our fault, especially not mine, and I'd gladly fix that problem if someone would just hand me a green card.::yes::

Anyway back to Halloween. My mom (aka DM or Grumpy) wanted to go back to New York "for a change" this fall. It just happened that my favorite band is opening a new venue for 10 days in Newark around that time, and the flights were under $500, so that was a done deal. NYC here we come :yay:

NYC is very expensive these days - $240 for a room with twin beds, plus tax - and the cost of living is enormous compared to Florida's. So it'd have to be a short trip, 5 nights.

I couldn't help but think how stupid it is to pay for a transatlantic flight just for 5 days. Yes New York is expensive... but we don't have to stay in NYC the whole time, do we??
Grumpy started to ask, where else would we .... NO NO WAY we are NOT going back to Disney we *JUST* came back, absolutely NOT!

That same night I called Disney Dining and got us an ADR at Liberty Tree Tavern on the last MNSSHP night.
You know, just in case.

By mid-August Grumpy was already homesick (and by homesick, I mean sick of being at home). She asked me to look at flights, maybe we could go back just for a week "somewhere". No luck, the flights were all over 1000 euros by then.

What about October, Grumpy ? We could go for a couple days after New York. You'd get a tan and all your friends would be so jealous. Just 2 days. or 3... You know, just for the Halloween party. At a value resort. Which we could get very cheap with my AP.

"AH NO!...." she exclaimed ... ugh, it didn't work.

"... I'm not staying at a Value! Can you get a discount for Wilderness Lodge ?"

Hook, line, and sinker.

No one can blame you for being ready to go back to WDW so soon :D I like your mother's attitude about staying at WL too... sounds like it's going to be a blast!! :D Can't wait to read more :)

Woohoo someone read AND posted a comment to my pretrippie !!! Yay !! Seriously thank you

So, this is how it all started.

My mom is a teacher so our vacations are dictated by the school calendar.
Technically, she'd be on vacation starting October 27th. But she doesn't work Fridays, so we chose to leave on the 26th.
We'd stay until the 1st in New York then take a flight down to Orlando, for 3 days at WL.

That was the plan and we stuck to it for almost a week.

AP rates came out and there were no standards at WL for our dates, only courtyard view and they were more than we wanted to spend. And WL is more of a "Christmassy" resort in our book.
We were going to try AKL this summer and changed our mind. Well what about AKL then ? Standard view $185 that'd work.

Hey, that's actually less than our night in NY. What if we took a late flight and spent the night at AKL?
Sounds great, let's axe one night in New York and do 4 nights at AKL instead.
But that's it, no more changes.

Except I was supposed to start working in September and that got pushed back to January.
That meant 2 things
1/I wouldn't have any money coming in until January.
2/I was free as a bird for 4 months.

We hadn't actually booked our flights yet. I have some money saved up - not much but some - and since I'm not paying rent, I can do pretty much what I want with it.

My best friend lives in FL near Clearwater, and I haven't seen her in over a year. I could take my flight with Grumpy, go to NY/WDW and then head to Clearwater and spend a couple weeks with her family before coming back.

Called her, and she was practically begging me to come - she's a SAHM now and not used to it, her youngest just started school so she's at home alone all day. How about I come & stay, at least until the kids are on Christmas break?

Flight was the same price, dates didn't conflict with anything.
:dance3: :dance3:

The hard part was telling Grumpy.

I haven't mentioned my father yet because (and I know it's going to sound horrible), there just aren't many positive things to say.
He's not a bad person but he has no interest in anything except his job as a school principal. That's the one and only thing he talks about.

The reason why Grumpy travels with me in the first place is that he won't go anywhere unless forced. According to him :
New York is "overpriced and dirty".
Orlando is "stupid".
Ft Lauderdale is "just a beach".
San Fransisco "there's nothing to see".

My mom put up with that for about 5 years during which she didn't go on vacation except for school trips.
Then, as I was ready to go to Ft Lauderdale for the 3rd time and as usual asked if she wanted to come along, she said yes.
We've been going to the US at least 3 times a year together ever since.

It's not just travel either. My dad hasn't seen a movie since Titanic. He's not interested in reading or TV. He used to be interested in music but not that much anymore. Yes I've considered the fact that he may be depressive, but he's not. He loves his work. He loves parading in front of parents who suck up to him and tell him he's wonderful so that their kids can be in the "good" class.
But when he gets home he does nothing. My mom works as many hours as he does, and has 2.5 hours a day of public transportation to put up with too. We live on school property so it takes him 2mns to get to his job, which means he's home hours before she is, yet it'd never enter his mind to cook her dinner or clean up the house a little bit. Most nights when she comes home he's in his room with his headphones on and doesn't even acknowledge her presence.
Unlike him Grumpy HAS been diagnosed with major depression several years ago, which is why I moved back in and still live there at 28 years old.
Alright I better keep the rest of it for therapy.

This is one of the reasons why I love Disney so much though. Leave the rest of the world behind, leave your worries at the door. Everything inside is clean and pretty and friendly. No bad surprises. The good always wins.
At WDW I saw my mom really LETTING GO for the first time in ages, enjoying herself, forgetting that she's an adult with responsibilities and having fun with the characters. Not have to worry if she looks silly. Just be carefree again.
To me THAT is the Disney Magic.

That pic in my siggie is the favorite pic I have of my mom, where she's genuinely smiling and not putting on a happy facade.

Back to our scheduled program... I had to tell Grumpy.
The first thing she asked is, would I be back for Christmas ?
(Another thing I blame my dad for - we don't do Christmas anymore. My father doesn't buy presents for anyone and thinks the holidays are stupid.)

Well, I hadn't intended to be. I was going to spend Christmas at my friend's house and enjoy seeing the kids opening their presents, enjoy being in the "Christmas Spirit" for once.
Spending the holidays at my house is just too depressing.

I could come back for Christmas, I told Grumpy, if she really wanted me to. But what if she came to Clearwater ? No, she doesn't know my friends and would feel weird at a family event with strangers. OK, what if we went somewhere together instead ?

"You know", my mom said, "I really enjoyed the decorations at Epcot last year. Could we do just a few days there ? Maybe at Wilderness Lodge, and then you could take the plane back home with me?"

So that's when we decided to add another trip to WDW - the fourth trip in one year.

Sounds like fun!

It's great that your mom is finally traveling and having fun. People like you dad can be very draining to be around. She is lucky to have a daughter like you, who wants to spend time with her.

This is the first pre trip I have ever read. When my friend Marivaid said she was doing a pretrip I just had to check it out.:goodvibes

Subscribing :surfweb: Great start and I'm looking forward to more. Disney sure is great therapy isn't it! ;)

Sounds like fun!

Sure does !!! I think planning the trip is half the fun :)

Hey there!! So glad you decided to check my pretrippie. Yep, "draining" is the word, exactly. Are you ready for your trip yet? It's getting closer!!!!

Disney sure is great therapy isn't it! ;)

Ain't that the truth.Best therapy I know.

Alrighty, so far we have the "double trippie" but why double-and-a-half??

Well, I've been thinking of doing a solo trip for some time. I could have gone in September but it'd have cost me a lot of award points for a flight, and it'd have been during free dining which I have zero interest in for a solo trip.

DM - technically - will not be finished with school until the 23rd. My friend's family will start Christmas planning about a week before the kids are on vacation. It's a family thing (the planning more than Christmas day itself, for some reason) and I don't really need to be there. So I'd thought of booking my usual motel on the beach for that last week - $60/night.
Not bad, I thought. About the price of a Value with my AP discount.
.
.

For a first solo trip a whole week sounded a little much. Let's cut the apple in half as we say here... and book POP 19-22.

I chose POP because we'd been there before and I knew what to expect. Then when I told Grumpy about it, she said "But what if the room is haunted again?".

Oh very very funny. Ha-Ha-Ha. Keep making the funny jokes and you'll spend Christmas a la Casa de Papa.
See on our last night in July, I'd taken a lot of medecine, had barely been sleeping for days, and I guess it's the combo of the two that had me pacing in the room in the middle of the night mumbling to myself that the room was haunted and that we had to leave.

Well, now that you mention it... what if it WAS haunted? Hey it could happen. Haven't you people seen that thing accross the lake ? Major ghost potential.
No,it's just a hotel. You're so silly.
Right?

Oh, didn't they say something on the DIS about All Stars Music being all refurbed and pretty?

So that's what we have so far

AKL Oct 31-Nov 4
ASMU Dec 19-22 (hopefully not haunted)
CSR Dec 22-26

Sounds simple enough right ? Too simple for us.

.

I have been planning since June and re planing. We are off property for the first time ever, which makes me a bit sad, But since this is a timeshare through my parents it's free. Two bedrooms and two baths for a family of five and I pay nothing! You cant beat that. We are right outside of the gates of the World and we like to rent a car anyway, so it's not that big a deal.

It appears I am rearing two planners, like dear old mom. Youngest and middle love to help plan. My oldest just goes with the flow, just like dad.

Your parents are great ! How cool that you get to stay at the time share for free. Of course being onsite is great but as long as you have a car I think you'll have an awesome time anyway. And with what you save maybe you can do a tour or just a nice dinner somewhere. Remember to take notes for your TR :)

I just changed our reservations again today :) We're doing 3 resorts in 7 nights now.:lmao:

Do you ever get "the guilt" ? We do every time we book a trip (in all fairness, it's only the 3rd time).

So after much talking we've decided (so far) to split both stays. 3 nights at POP before going to AKL, and adding 3 nights with DM at ASMU to my solo ressie before going to CSR.

To me, it was worth it for the October trip since it did save us about $110 a night, but I always thought it was useless for the CSR trip. It's barely saving us $45 a night. What I wanted was WL and I'd find a way to get us a night there somehow.

I booked our ADRs over a month ago and didn't intend to change any for December. We had WCC booked for Christmas, and although the menu didn't appeal to me at all it'd still be fun. I had in in my head to book Christmas night at WL. Unfortunately, at $472, it'd be just nuts.

Well last week we found out Grumpy would actually be able to leave on Thursday instead of Saturday (some of her classes have activities on Thursday). The flight's much cheaper and so I started looking for a way to go to WL on those 2 nights. I also added 2 nights to my solo ressie.
Grumpy also somehow understood that I'd come get her at the airport - but you're only allowed one roundtrip on DME for each reservation. If she wanted me to do that we'd have to make 2 separate reservations at ASMU.

During the night I saw that WL had availability for Dec 20-22 standard room. STUPID ME should have jumped on it but instead I waited until Grumpy was awake. As usual the site wasn't working between 6am-noon our time so we had to wait until it came back up, and by then only the night of the 21st was available.

We went ahead and got it, then booked one night at ASMU for the 20th, then I called to remove 3 nights off my ASMU ressie and add 1 to CSR's.
Phew!!!!!

Right now in December we're doing
Me solo at ASMU Dec 17-20
Separate ressie ASMU Dec 20 (so I can use DME to get Grumpy at MCO)
One night at WL Dec 21
5 nights at CSR Dec 22-27

Also I changed several of our ressies, mainly switching Spoodles and WCC. We like the regular menu better at WCC, plus we'll be in that resort, and doing Spoodles on Christmas day means we'll only be a boat ride away from MGM or Epcot, if we decided to go check it out.

I haven't given up on getting a night at WL for the 20th or 22nd.
I really wanted to have our room decorated and have presents waiting for DM when she gets there, sure I can do it at ASMU but it's not the same.

Our itinerary is done too and looks like this
(Thanks DebIreland, I kinda copied your spreadsheet!!)

christmasitinerary.jpg

I don't think the parks/ADRs will change anymore unless I can somehow manage to get WL for a few extra nights (highly unlikely according to the lady I had on the phone this morning).

Grumpy & I are very very excited about trying California Grill at the CR. Our first Signature restaurant! This morning we were discussing how our tastes are going "up". Our first trip we booked ASMO and "splurged" on lunch at Crystal Palace. Now we're booking Deluxes and eating at a Signature restaurant.

Good thing neither of us is really interested in the Grand Floridian (although we haven't checked it out yet) because it'd start getting hard to take 1 Disney vacation a year, let alone 4!

Things left to for Christmas trip :

- Try to get one or two extra nights at WL
- Book sleigh ride on the 21st
- Book Donald's Safari breakfast
- Get AAdvantage flight for Grumpy

When I get to my friends in FL I have to hit the Dollar Store and stock up on Christmas decorations for our room. Also go to Home Depot and get some LGMH.

I'm really pleased with our Christmas trip at this point. We didn't have any trouble getting ADRs even for Christmas's Eve and Christmas.

It's the Halloween trip that needs some work done.

:tink:

The Halloween itinerary just says BLAH to me right now. This is what we have :

HALLOWEEN.jpg

Oh yeah we're arriving on the 29th now. I don't even remember when we decided to do that. Our NY trip is getting shorter & shorter LOL

What's wrong with that, you ask ? Well....

1. I absolutely LOATHE the fact that we're doing the MNSSHP on one of our AKL nights. We only have 3 days there, and during one of them we'll be gone by 4PM and not back 'til 1AM ?? What the heck was I thinking?

2. If we want to see the regular Wishes & Spectro we have 2 options : Nov 1 and Nov 3. The party is Nov 2. I know my Grumpy, if we spend the whole evening & night of the 2nd at MK she will NOT want to go back on the 3rd. And we won't see Wishes on that trip.

3. DME will pick us up aroud noon on the 4th which will not give us a whole lot of time to enjoy the resort.

4. Our ADRs are blah. No other way to put it. We don't need 2 lunches at Le Cellier, and probably won't go to the 2nd one. We want to do CP but if we go for breakfast then we have no early morning at Epcot. Bad because we're Soarin' junkies. I'm having 2nd (and 3rd, and 4th) thoughts about dinner at Chef Mickey's. Lots of bad reviews, too many not to take them into consideration. Grumpy is pretty much Chef Mickey-ed out, so I'm the one insisting on that one. I did finally get a good ADR but it's for 3, not 2, and I feel a little guilty about that.

5. We're going to the Outlets on the day we switch resorts which means I'l have to take my laptop along. No lockers at the Outlets and it's a pain to carry when we're shopping.

Yep that thing needs fixin'. I have an idea but it would require 2 switches, not sure Grumpy would go for it.

It's weird how the Christmas itinerary pretty much fell together so easily and this one is a PAINNNN.:confused3

OK I'm both excited and a little remorseful.

I "worked" on the itinerary for hours and finally decided that it'd work better if we switched the order of resorts. I put together a tentative itinerary with ADRs (had no idea if I could get what I wanted).

Then an hour ago (7AM for you guys, 1PM for me!!) I called to change our resort reservations.
I feel soooooo bad for the poor girl who got me.

See I have 2 reservations, one for AKL and one for POP. I started by asking to modify the AKL ressie but she couldn't do it because I had the POP reservation on those days. Alright let's change the POP one first. Now I'd checked online several times and it showed availability for POP on the dates I wanted. Well she said there was nothing available at ANY value resort. I told her I'm looking at the site right now and I could get POP or ASMU. She said that's not possible, but let's see if it'll let you book it.

I was actually on the phone with resort reservation and making my ressie online myself WHILE still on the phone :rolleyes1 - if that's not a proof that there's something wrong with the reservation system I don't know what is.

So she canceled my "original" POP reservation entirely & then worked on the AKL one. I was on hold for a good 20mns. She comes back & asks how old my daughter is. I told her I'm traveling with my mom, and she's 58. She said she was marked down as a CHILD in the reservation. Okayyyyyyyyy :headache:
I was on hold for another 10mns and then she said it was all done (I checked - it is).

So we're now doing

AKL Oct 29-Nov 2
POP Nov 2-4

Yeah one more night at AKL than planned, but we did dump Chef Mickey's dinner so it'll be more or less the same money wise. If Grumpy doesn't agree then we'll spend the first night at POP - but I have a feeling she'll go for it

I still feel soooo bad for that poor girl. That thing made MY head ache so I can only imagine what she was thinking/feeling.
I wonder if they put red flags or things like that for "annoying guests". If they do then my file is probably COVERED by red flags!!

Next she transfered me to Dining & I kept my fingers crossed - would I get the ADRs I wanted only 6 weeks in advance ?
Yep. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.
Including Le Cellier !! :dance3:

To me that's a sign. When your ADRs fall together perfectly that means you've got "it".

Now I can concentrate on packing.:hippie:

Your too funny! The CM's really earn their money working with you.:lmao: So what ADR's did you get for the Oct/Nov trip? I want to know what places I'm going to see pictures of.;)

BTW. Thanks for the Boo. I've been seeing them and thought it was so cute! I'm glad the directions to insert it were idiot proof, because I am so bad with stuff like that. The only reason I have a ticker is because a kind Diser posted instructions.

Awww you did great with the Boo! Isn't it adorable??

Yeah I think the CMs hate me LOL.. they're nice on the phone and all but I bet once I hang up they say OMG THIS WOMAN DROVE ME NUTS!!!
Or worse :lmao:

The ADR Saga

I was actually much, much better with the ADRs for those 2 trips than for this summer. Oh my Goodness. I changed our ADRs at least 20 times for our July trip (seriously). In my defense we also changed resorts/dates half a dozen times so everything was linked.

What we usually do for ADRs is see how many meals we want then split, Grumpy gets to pick half and I pick my half too.

We have very very very different tastes.
My mom LOVES meat. Her favorite dish here is steak tartare which is raw hashed beef that you mix with a raw egg, onions, and sometimes capers.

I can't even be in the same room when she eats that.
My tastes are much more refined. Think mac'n'cheese and chicken nuggets.

So picking restaurants that will please us both can be tricky.

Grumpy said she's kind of over the whole character meal thing. You wouldn't have known that when she was hugging Goofy a couple months ago but whatever....

For October Grumpy chose :
- Le Cellier (I'm not telling her yet that they took away the creme brulee ) - she wanted dinner but I could only get lunch
- Boma dinner
- Kona lunch

I chose :
- Liberty Tree Tavern dinner
- Crystal Palace dinner
- Cape May breakfast

And we both agreed on Boma breakfast.
So these are our 7 ADRs for October!

For December it was a bit trickier as there are 2 days when we can't use our DDE card. Christmas Eve & Christmas Day.
For Christmas Eve we were lucky to get a Candlelight Processional package. It worked out great because we can't use the DDE for the CP package anyway. If we'd booked the CP on another day then it'd have been THREE discount-less meals instead of 2.

Grumpy wanted to try San Angel since she saw the place on the Gran Fiesta ride. I can't say I'm thrilled, the pics on the DIS show everything covered in sauce and a lot of meat. But, that's what she wanted.

Initially we had WCC for Christmas but we changed that to Spoodles - another of Grumpy's choices. We had the BEST server there last year, Wayne, and I'm keeping fingers & toes crossed that he's here again.

wayne.jpg

Anyway, for Christmas we agreed on :
- Whispering Canyon
- Kona Cafe
- California Grill
- 1900 Park Fare

Grumpy chose
- San Angel Inn
- Spoodles
- Mama Melrose's

I chose :
- Donald's Safari Breakfast (that is if they ever start taking ressies)
- 'Ohana Breakfast - I need me some Stitch.

ADRs for my solo trip ? NONE.
First, I'm broke.
Second, I want to try all these snacks that DISers talk about! We're often too full after our entree to order dessert, let alone a snack in the park.
I wanna try all these yummy delicacies like french toast loaf at MK bakery, cupcakes, giant brownies, Doh' bars.. (see a pattern here??).
Get ready for 3 1/2 days of junk food reviews when I come back popcorn::
