Does the Disney Vault still exist?

How does it work exactly??

Im looking to start collecting Disney movie DVDs but obviously alot of them aren't out at the moment so just curious as to how it works!

thank u!

I don't believe ther is an actual "vault". rather it is a marketing strategy designed to make people think they need to run out and snag whatever movie is being hawked as "about to go into the vault" before it will be unavailable forever...or until they do a "Special Re-release" of it again in 10 years.

Actually there is a vault. They store all the original films in it. When Universal Studios backlot burnt in California they were worried about losing some of their original films that were stored in a vault there. Luckily the fire did not spread that far and they were able to get them out to safety. But when they say a movie is going back to the vault they mean they are no longer making copies of the original for sale anymore. Even though all copies of that movie are supposed to be sent back to the company on that date not all stores do this and you can still find copies on the store shelves sometimes even months later.
It use to be that Disney would re-release a movie every 7 years. They use to go to the theaters every 7 years now it is to dvd or blue ray. Sometimes sooner than 7 years though as media changes.

Yeah, "The Vault" and "The Vault" are two different things... there is a real vault, like Halblieb says, as well as a vault as a marketing tactic. The OP is experiencing the effect of that marketing tactic first-hand. I wonder, as time goes on, just how effective that tactic is going to be, as a secondary market for discs gets more robust.

im not talking about an actual vault lol

im just talking about the marketing tactic they use, saying the movie will go back into the "vault"

im just wondering do the movies really only go on sale every 7 years?!

I don't think they've ever specifically promised that the films "put back in the 'vault'" will not be re-released for any specific number of years, but they have been consistent in withdrawing the films from distribution and keeping them out of circulation for a significant number of years.

I thought the 7 year cycle was originally designed with theatrical screenings in mind. During the advent of home video (which Disney fiercely protested as I recall) I think the idea of applying that principle to home video releases was applied. That was prior to Ebay, second hand video stores, and the ability of your neighbor to copy DVDs. Seems like the 7 year concept is kind of a moot point here in the early 21st century.:)

Yes the 7 year cycle was originally for theater but when they started putting them out on vhs they did the same thing. With dvd and blue ray they have released some of them sooner because they keep bringing out special additions or the media keeps getting better so they bring it out again to introduce it onto that media ika blueray vs dvd.

Unless you are really sophisticated at it copying disney dvds are not that easy. They have programing on them to stop you from doing this. Even some of the old vhs had this. The movie would either not copy at all or have really poor quality that you could not even watch it. So I do not think disney is worried about this aspect of it so much as the second hand buying. Most disney collectors want new though. Also many of disney's movies today are released onto tv and people could copy them that way as well. And with dvd recorders you can get better quality today than back during the vcr days.

Best advice for you if you want to start collecting. Start looking at the disney website- they have a release calander on there listing all the releases this year and upcoming releases. They also have a list of all the movies telling you what is still available and what went back to the "vault". You will be surprised at how many you will have just within the next couple of years worth of collecting. Also you might want to collect the blueray combo packs as everything is moving in the direction of blueray and dvd will be no more in the near future.
