The Disney Smell

As soon as I get off the bus at the MK, I take a big, deep breath. My dh said "what are you doing?" and I replied "just taking it all in!" He thinks I'm a little nuts, but hey!

My daughter loves walking by Mexico in Epcot, it has a distinct smell too, I think chlorine combined with the smells of the mexican food. Whatever it is, she and I love it, but my husband thinks we're nuts. :p

OK, I'm a bit hesitant to say this, but my first thought was "sweat!" I'm ONLY kidding!!!!! But you have to laugh, right? I mean come on! Thousands of visitors walking around in the Florida humidity??

Anyway, I also agree that there is a certain scent in the air. I like what a previous poster said about it being "happiness."

The GF smell is from all the fresh flowers they use - my DH somtimes gets me a bouquet of lillies that has the same smell and he says it's a little whif of the GF until we make it back to WDW.

I think the scent should be bottled...don't you?

Great replies!!

We (my DH and I) had a conversation today about those "Disney" smells. His answer was that some off the smell came from the type of oak that they use in parts of Disney. Like Tom Sawyer's Island, POTC, Frontierland, and the Polyanisian Resort.
All I know is, everytime I go I can recall a special smell from the butterpopcorn to the fresh made fudge on Main Street USA, to the musty smell that you get in POTC and just the "Disney" smell all over. Every scent is different yet, memorable in a special way.

You guys are not nuts! Keep it going~~ :cool1:

There is definately a "Disney" smell.....we notice it most often when exiting a large mall or store (like Wal-Mart) on a hot day, and it has rained while we were in the store....the combination of sun and hot, just-rained-on pavement...that does it for sure

::yes:: There is definitely something. I thought it was the humidity with all the flowers. :earsboy:

Okay, DH thinks I am crazy but I insist that the GF has a certain smell in the morning that makes he feel almost giddy. I don't know if its a combination of certain kinds of flowers and the warm July sun or what but I would recognize that smell anywhere. Glad to know that I am not alone.

I swear it has a certain smell too! :teeth: It also makes me all giddy. One time at home, there was something that smelled like the GF, I don't remember exactly what and of course I had to shout out "It smells like the Grand Floridian!!!" Yes I have gone crazy. :rotfl:

I will join the crazy line :) :earsgirl:

the smell of PotC gets me :)
LOVE it for some reason >) !
we have a very old WDW playstation game and when the kids and I play it, there is a PotC section and i imerse myself so much I can smell the ride and feel the cold damp air :)

I read that Disney actually pumps aromas of certain flowers and fresh baked cookies throughout their parks.

I know it sounds outlandish, but this attention to detail is what sets Disney apart from the competitors.

There are too many "Disney Smells" to list for me!

My favorite is when I walk through the doors at the POLY upon check in. I literally stand there and take several deep breaths! MY DW and 2 DD's always watch and laugh. :goodvibes

There are so many smells that take me back to Disney...but the most recent and the strangest by far is this one...we were eating at a restuarant that we go to quite often about a week ago. My dd and I went to the ladies room. When we walked in, we both stopped dead in our tracks. Dd looked at me and said.."What does it smell like in here? You know what it is Mom!!" I told her I thought it smelled like the lobby of the Polynesian. She completely agreed. I don't know what was different..maybe they were using a different air freshener but my word, I was at the Polynesian for a moment there!!!

Or if I smell someone grilling turkey. You all know where that takes me. Oh yum!!

Our favorite smells are the AKL smokey smell, the Main St Bakery, the smell of the pavement after a rain & the flowers & clorine/water.
We sometimes go back to AKL even when we aren't staying there just to smell it! Pretty goofy, I know!

Great, so I'm not crazy! There IS definitely a "Disney Smell". I think it is a combination of the hot, wet asphalt, the ion- charged Florida air, and the exotic plants! Sometimes you can smell it on warm spring mornings, even in NE, on those misty sorts of days...

My favorite Disney Smells are the Popcorn Smellitzer on Main Street (the 'pump' to which some people were referring) and the "burning Romans" one in Spaceship Earth.

Mmm, love those burning Romans.

my husband said that monorail smell is actually ozone. they must pump it in w/ the air conditioning or heat to get rid of peoples body odor...i think it smells like band aids! it isn't ozone like the earths ozone layer. it is used to clean up bad air. car detailers and used car places pump it into cars that came from smokers in order to soak up the smell...i've also smelled it at hair & nail salons to get rid of the perm and nail chemical smells....strange!

From time to time I'll get a whif of something and it takes me back to Ft. Wilderness. It's a wonderful old woody type smell. My dh thinks I'm crazy, but I don't care.|!!!

The pipe in a bayou-type smell into the POTC in Disneyland. Years ago when I worked in the Pirate Shop, the storage room where we kept our excess inventory was located down below the shop. The storage room shared a wall with POTC and the bayou smell was piped into the storage room, as well. Brings back a lot of great memories!

Anyone remember the smell of Oranges from Epcot? Right where the ride used to turn and you'd see the futuristic family in their family room, and you always knew that right after that you would get to choose your adventure? (Water, Dessert, Space, etc.) Whenever I smell oranges it takes me back to that ride when I was little!
