The DisFort's Chit Chat Cafe

Most fiber you see going up and down the bigger roads is all backhaul or long distance capacity. They are digging in big locally and people are getting their hopes up. Since I work in the industry I just know a lot of the regional north south conduits are full and the fiber in them are at capacity.

Rural internet is still such a challenge. I do hope that Starlink and its competitors like Oneweb make it a good solid product and don't try to take advantage of consumers. Though knowing how most big traded companies are, they will take as much advantage as they legally and socially can.
It's actually a company that's specifically bringing fiber to rural users. There is another company that a does line of sight radio shot, but my house is surrounded by trees. Satellite based is probably the ticket for me until something hard wired makes it's way down my road.

For now, just waiting for the Amazon man to bring me a MIMO antenna to punch up my signal to the T-Mobile tower that's JUST far enough away right now.

Made some progress. Base plate is on. Breakaway switch is mounted and wired up and the 6 way plug for the brake lights and turn signals is mounted.

I still have to wire up the lights to the plug, but that will wait until tomorrow.

Been a while since I posted (Pigeon Forge DisMeet time frame), still been lurking about. But just thought I would pop in and say "Hi" as I am on my way to the Fort. Spending the night at Eagles Roost just inside GA, before going into FL.

I'll start a trip report thread once we arrive tomorrow, and also some things I have been up to.

Took the MH back to storage yesterday and hooked up the Jeep for a little 10ft test pull. Everything worked! I have to get a power plug for the BrakeBuddy transmitter that goes in the car. I bought the setup used last year and I thought the transmitter powered through the BrakeBuddy connector. I'll test all that next weekend.

Pretty happy with everything. The tow bars are level after I flipped the receiver and the Jeep is super easy to put into neutral/tow mode. One odd thing that I read on a different forum. Jeeps with electronic power steering have the power steering disabled for 60 seconds after you re-engage the transfer case. It isn't listed anywhere in manual and a little discerning when you try to pull away. It is a bear to turn without the assist.

Sounds like a diva race car driver if I've ever heard.
Ha! I had hydraulic power steering in my Fox Mustang and Ford Racing electric power steering in the S197 Mustangs. Makes a world of difference in an hour long race with really sticky racing tires.

I won't tell you about the CoolShirts we also wore.

No DS for that. I don't mind, its a zero turn and I only break out the string trimmer ever other cut. At least with the CS mid summer its like having AC on the Zero Turn

Two funny stories on the CoolShirts.

I have friends that race in GrandAm. They used to have an electric cooling system, instead of an ice water box, that fed their shirt or helmet. The system worked in reverse if you wired it backwards, meaning instead of cooling, it heated. I won't forget the story one of the guys telling about his that got wired backwards and he said he felt like he was on fire. He kept turning it up and getting hotter. It wasn't until one of the crew told him over the radio what happened and he shut it off. For the less obvious, wearing a layer of plastic between your Nomex underwear and 2 layer fire suit in a cockpit that is 120 degrees isn't fun. Happened to me when I ran my box out of ice.

I actually used a brand (986inc) that we had as a contingency sponsor on the car. I don't think they exist anymore, although I still have their stuff. I liked it better. Instead of tubes, it used a mesh that spread the cold water out better. It had a remote "pot" switch to control the water flow. It was mounted next to my brake bias knob and I would always grab the wrong one during the race. One race I was in a nose/tail battle for almost 45 minutes with my teammate. I accidentally turn up the coolshirt instead of the brake bias and the shirt got so cold it almost froze my skin. In the midst of the race, the sensation on my skin felt "hot" even though it was freezing, so I kept turning up the coolshirt. It wasn't until I got out of the car and felt the shirt that I realized I was freezing my skin.

Been there, done that with a shared enduro car. The original controls where next to the radio controls. More then once I would turn up the volume and not the CS and blast my ears out next time someone keyed up. I moved the suite control up where the original radio was so you could see what settings you where using. As for the non ice bucket models, they are nice though expensive so I went with the cheaper route.

Prep for the trip has officially begun for us. Next few evenings I will get what I need taken care of, cry over filling the tank (before PA since oof) and be ready to hit the road early Friday afternoon.

Not sure if I will be making any trips this year. Just got told , on june first they are canceling all our vacation and paying us out for it. This screws me up badly. So, I knew we were getting merged, and I would be forced retired, but now I can not even take a day off. This is making me sick.
